The report identified impacts to #speciesAtRisk, risks of #contamination of surface- and #groundwater, risks of #airpollution, and that the project did not properly consider #economicRisks in its evaluation (which may be significant for the agri-food sector in our region), while overstating royalty payments. There was no cost evaluation for the long-term treatment of #water (long after the coal mine would be closed) and dubious commitments for #restoration after #mine closure.

Evening grosbeaks at one of our feeders. They are a species at risk. We regularly have >20 at a time with more in the surrounding trees. Our property is ideal for overwintering and migrating birds, as it is surrounded by mixed woods, and has an old unsprayed orchard, small ponds, a pollinator-friendly garden, and humans who love them and let them be.

This print is my response to seeing invasive dog-strangling vine (European swallowwort, Vincetoxicum rossicum) popping up all over my neighbourhood. Not only do these plants create dense stands that outcompete native plants but they threaten the monarch butterfly which depends on milkweed and are fooled by similarities between the two into mistakenly laying eggs on dog-strangling vine 🧵
