The Australian billionaire Gina Rinehart will reapply to open a smaller version of the Grassy Mtn mine in Alberta.
The article states that a previous larger version of the project was rejected after federal review. In fact a joint federal-provincial review panel unanimously recommended against the project. The panel of 3 consisted of 2 appointed by Alberta and 1 by Canada. Alberta's Energy Regulator rejected the mine.

The report identified impacts to #speciesAtRisk, risks of #contamination of surface- and #groundwater, risks of #airpollution, and that the project did not properly consider #economicRisks in its evaluation (which may be significant for the agri-food sector in our region), while overstating royalty payments. There was no cost evaluation for the long-term treatment of #water (long after the coal mine would be closed) and dubious commitments for #restoration after #mine closure.

Evening grosbeaks at one of our feeders. They are a species at risk. We regularly have >20 at a time with more in the surrounding trees. Our property is ideal for overwintering and migrating birds, as it is surrounded by mixed woods, and has an old unsprayed orchard, small ponds, a pollinator-friendly garden, and humans who love them and let them be.
