    Bought this little programmable keypad. Once programmed it works on linux, macos and windows.

    Now I can copy, paste, pan, zoom, ctrl, shift and alt while using #pixelorama or #aseprite . Works great and makes the experience so much better.

    Looks

    KiiBOOM is a master of creating aesthetically high-quality keyboards, and the Cybrix29 is no exception. The keypad is very well made with a light weight design that makes it perfect for travel. The colors are all bright and the lettering is clear. The quality of the keycaps gives me confidence that it wonโ€™t fade in the near future. The RGB makes the keyboard fun. The colors are vibrant, and the customization options give the keypad its versatility. There is a Cybrix29 configuration for every setup.

    My only complaint is that it is a wired connection. I donโ€™t like having too much wire clutter, but it is the price to pay for a high speed low-latency connection. However, it is a price I am willing to pay because this keypad is a beast of a machine.

    Performance

    If you are looking for a tool to give you a competitive edge or just want a more comfortable gaming experience, the Cybrix29 is a fantastic upgrade. The wire connection gives the keypad its negligible latency. You might need to do a bit of remapping, but the keypad has most of the keys you need for the games you play. I end up remapping a lot of what I play, so it wasnโ€™t a huge deal.

    The Cybrix29 features a fantastic out of the box experience, but being able to remap and reprogram the keys is nice to have and easy to do. The adjustable actuation and sensitivity as well as the advanced features (Snap Key (SOCD) and Dynamic Keystroke (DKS) support) make it a very powerful gaming tool. I didnโ€™t feel the need to make any adjustments, but they are available for those who need it. Just make sure the game allows it first.

    Although I donโ€™t have a real way to test it, the Cybrix29 has the potential to be a powerful macro pad. The three dials are very handy for editing, and being able to remap everything certainly has its value. If you are looking for a powerful daily driver that looks good and is low profile, check out the Cybrix29.

    Comfort

    The most important feature of any keyboard is its comfort, and the Cybrix29 is comfortable. The keycaps feel great, and the switches have enough resistance to not only be satisfying, but they donโ€™t create any fatigue. I was able to game for long hours without any hand pain. The sound is loud enough to be satisfying without being overbearing. My wife appreciates that it doesnโ€™t fill the house with the thacking I love so much.

    Conclusion

    I love the Cybrix29 and it will be my daily driver for my main games. I have it configured just right for Guild Wars 2, and with the new expansion out, I am going to be spending a lot of time in Tyria. A keypad this size is a great option for those who need a macropad to play with, or for those who donโ€™t want to buy a full sized keyboard. The size makes it a functional gaming peripheral, and its design makes it easy to store. It is also a very good for travel, if you donโ€™t want to carry a full sized keyboard. With a bit of tinkering, the Cybrix29 can handle any game and task, making it the perfect tool for those who need it.

  15. Glancing again at dedicated left-hand WASD-plus #gaming #keypad devices. About the only one that isn't just half a keyboard stuck on a stand and doesn't look like an alien medical-torture device is still the Logitech G13.
    But
    not one of the "suggested" games that it's optimized for is one I'm interested in (the closest is Fallout 3), and HOLY FREAKING MOTHER OF HASTUR, $500 for a left-hand keypad? GTFO.

Iโ€™ve had an Adafruit Macropad for a little over 3 years, and while I was working from home at the start of that period it was permanently on, connected to my MacBook Pro on my desktop, with a variety of shortcuts configured for driving different apps that I used day-to-day. My configuration is on GitHub.

    More recently, I have not been using it nearly as much.

    Last weekend for our Makeroni meetup, I pulled it out of my kit bag and started to tinker some more. I have a variety of additional Qwiic / StemmaQT controls and sensors that I wanted to play with, so I updated to the most recent stable build of CircuitPython and started to have a look at them.

    I also noticed that it is a nice size to act as a companion device to the MNT Pocket Reformโ€ฆ

    I noticed a problem โ€“ there was some burn-in on the OLED display where it had been mostly always-on in the past (lesson learned, to manage the screen output more carefully!) โ€“ but fortunately, Adafruit have done a lovely job of making that easy to replace. I also think it might be nice to have that screen wedged up at a slight angle to aid readability.

    I have a notion that I can 3D print a case to more-or-less match the look of my Hyper Purple laptop. I donโ€™t have an identical colour of filament, but I do have a range of options. I also ordered a bunch of different knobs for the potentiometer, and some alternate keycaps, so that I can make the look a bit more consistent as well.

    I donโ€™t have a final case design yet (and I need to spend some time properly learning FreeCAD and/or Fusion360, really), and I also havenโ€™t finished modifying the macros code to match what Iโ€™m using on Debian on the Pocket Reform, but this is just some work-in-progress.

    I have enough trouble with #touchscreens, and I'm sighted. I can't imagine how difficult it is for you.

    Where I am, #retail locations are replacing their older POS #payment terminals with newer-generation ones that ditch the #keypad for a touchscreen. The pads of my fingers are thick and dry and don't activate them well; it takes 3 or 4 tries to activate each "button" press.

    How on earth are the blind supposed to use these?

  23. I have a history with USB peripherals that provide Extra Buttons. Besides the El Gato Stream Deck, I have a Shuttle Pro (purchased at MacWorld NYC!) and a Belkin Nostromo SpeedPad n50. Various other USB button-festooned peripherals abound in a box.

    I always have grand plans for extra buttons that are dashed against the hard reality of Figuring Out How to Program and Use the Peripheral.

  25. Keyboard Matrix Decode

    I found an old keyboard, a โ€œKSP970โ€ which is a sub ยฃ20 keyboard with full size (non touch sensitive) keys, that was being thrown out as battery acid had corroded away most of the circuit board inside, but the keyboard itself was still intact so I thought it would make an interesting project to attempt to read the keyboard.

    These are the key Arduino tutorials for the main concepts used in this project:

    Parts list

    • Arduino Nano
    • 16x LEDs (optional)
    • 8x 220ฮฉ resistors (to go with the LEDs โ€“ also optional)
    • Breadboard and jumper wires
    • Scrap keyboard!

    The Circuit

    Most keyboards and keypads use a โ€œmatrixโ€ method of decoding keypresses.  I wonโ€™t go into the details here, but the Open Music Labs tutorial has an excellent description of the concept, but the general principle is that the keys are decoded as โ€œrowsโ€ and โ€œcolumnsโ€ even though on a music keyboard they are naturally sequential. If you are lucky, as I was, the keyboard will have two sets of connecting wires (see the two silvered ribbon cables in the photo) โ€“ one for โ€œrowsโ€ and one for โ€œcolumnsโ€ which can be linked up to your Arduinoโ€™s IO pins.

    The trick is to work out which keys are linked to which pins, which is where this simple circuit comes in.

    I have a 61 note keyboard and each of the ribbons is 8 wires wide.  I can see from the underside of the keyboard pcb that each keyโ€™s switch is linked via a diode to the โ€œrowโ€ pins.  Iโ€™ve only shown one key circuit in the above, but the Open Music Labโ€™s tutorial shows the โ€œmatrixโ€ in more detail and the same circuit seems to be used here.

    One simplification for me though was that I have several of these really cheap โ€œ8 bitโ€ LED โ€œbarsโ€ which make decoding the key matrix very easy โ€“ they contain 8 LEDs and associated resistors in a breadboard-friendly format.

    My final test circuit looks like this:

    I feed power into the two breadboard rails (5V) and then can work out which keys light up the second set of LEDs and thus map keys to combinations of โ€œrowsโ€ and โ€œcolumnsโ€.  Note, in the above photo Iโ€™ve applied power to all of the โ€œrowsโ€, but in practice youโ€™d only want power on one at a time to see which keys light up the other LEDs.

    Once I knew how the keys were decoded (it turned out pretty simple and logical) then I could hook it up to an Arduino and see if I could detect keypresses.

    I used a Nano which means I could relatively simply attach the two 8-way connectors to the two sides of the board, with one proviso.  I am using the analog ports as digital IO pins, which works fine for A0 to A5, but you canโ€™t use A6 and A7 in that way so I had to re-route the last two pins over to D11 and D12.  As I had a new cheap Nano to use, I was able to desolder the pins on A6 and A7 leaving them unconnected from the 8-way headers.

    The Code

    Once the Nano was involved, I was able to install the Keypad library for the Arduino (search for Keypad and find the library simply called โ€œKeypadโ€ by Mark Stanley) and modify the MultiKey demo sketch as follows:

    • I need a 8ร—8 matrix decoding, so the array at the start of the sketch needs updating.
    • As the keys on my keyboard decoded sequentially in a straightforward manner, I didnโ€™t have any complicated reordering of the keys to be done to match up with Arduino pin numbers.
    • I want to eventually output MIDI note numbers, so I changed the characters in the array to MIDI note numbers.
    • On printing, I forced the code to print the MIDI note number rather than the letter names.

    My first try had the rows and columns the wrong way round and yielding nothing.  The mapping I eventually used was as follows.

    This seems to work very nicely.  You can see it hooked up and the serial output from playing a โ€œchordโ€ below.

    Closing Thoughts

    Decoding the key presses ended up being relatively simple for this keyboard which was a bonus.  Next I will add the MIDI library and get it actually outputting MIDI messages.

    Iโ€™ve had a play with the tone generating module, just to get an idea for what it can do (I might write that up one day too), but it isnโ€™t really salvageable.

    However the power supply and built-in amplifier and speakers seem fine so it would be really interesting to use this as a housing for some of my other Arduino music projects.
