I'm off to inspect a room in an aged care facility possibly for an #ElderlyRelative.

And I get to ask questions.

Please tell me what questions you'd ask.
Even questions you might think of avoiding asking.

I'll be Replying to this toot with some of the #AgedCareQuestions I come up with too.

(This #AgedCareFacility / #NursingHome is in #Australia. The standard of care here is much lower than the USA AIUI.)

Autonomy & Manipulation

This stuff is more complex than I'd thought.

I've bought a #RedPlate and now an #ElderlyRelative is not rejecting their meal, or rejecting it so much less that all of it gets eaten.

I'd like to hear from other carers and also parents on when you think manipulation is ok, when it fits with autonomy, when it doesn't, when it's not ok, and things like that.

An #ElderlyRelative is heartily sick and tired of taking 5 x #FishOil capsules the size of footballs (hyperbole).

Today the first dessert spoonful of fish oil went down in seconds with no drama.

#AgingInPlace is difficult.
#ElderlyRelative's #TileApp reports her credit card is astray in a restaurant some distance from home.

Helpers keep getting timed out on website as they try to get a stop put on the credit card.
Phone call to #ANZ #Bank fails as the call centre worker's accent and low volume of speech makes communication with ElderlyRelative ineffective.

Hmmm.
Why would the reader/performer of the prologue say "Droenfontein".
Isn't it #Doornfontein?

So now I've got ongoing doubts about the performer's faithfulness to the book and the accuracy of any emphasis they make in their speech.

Don't know how much audiobook performers get paid. Maybe it isn't enough to get correct pronounciation happening for unfamilar words?

And where is their editor?

It's almost as if the remote is not an adequate user interface.

Having too many options results in them having no options.
Large corporations need laws imposed on them forcing then to provide accessibility options.

Checked out #Goolgle Dialer on #Playstore to use on a #Blind #ElderlyRelative's #Android phone.

Looked ok-ish.
No mention of ads.
Option to have #Keypad as start screen.

Install.

Then find that the little sh[[s at Google are showing full screen ads on dialer startup.

But for undisclosed and non-obvious reasons the bank card used would not be accepted.

Ooooooh, looks like #Optus has #ShatTheBedAgain and has more #NetworkProblems, as both my new phone and an #ElderlyRelative's phone are getting the same "unauthorised to call this number" type message.

Lucky folk don't use their mobile phones for important things or #TheyMightBeInconvenienced.

#MedicalPackaging, specifically the #ChildProofCap / #SafetyCap, has again prevented an #ElderlyRelative from taking their dose of medicine.

My confidence that these things are adequately tested for usability by the frailer aged is low, very low.

More generally, the limit of the efficacy of any drug seems largely determined by the accessibility of #PatientCompliance with the required dosage.

And then there is #PostReleaseCare for #PainControl.
Demand a detailed description before surgery?

Just helped an #ElderlyRelative who has significant short-term #MemoryLoss to use the #TileApp to help her find a handbag with house key and bankcard permanently attached.

Did this over the phone from 15km distance.

Success!

I'm happy, they're happy.

I'm highly critical of much of IT app design, the effects of large amounts of screen time on individuals, relationships and communities.

But this app and hardware worked.
