Autonomy & Manipulation

This stuff is more complex than I'd thought.

I've bought a #RedPlate and now an #ElderlyRelative is not rejecting their meal, or rejecting it so much less that all of it gets eaten.

I'd like to hear from other carers and also parents on when you think manipulation is ok, when it fits with autonomy, when it doesn't, when it's not ok, and things like that.

There are a lot of apps like Uber, DiDi, YT, that are significant barriers to disabled and frail aged folk partucipating in the community.

We need stronger government regulations.

#ElderlyRelative seemed to need more care to #AgeInPlace.
Hours were put in to get assessment, approval and provision of a largely government funded #AgedCare package and then the support started being delivered.
Which increased, not decreased, the load on family carers.
Then a minor car crash, just enough to fracture sternum, while getting support service.
Then pain, and step-downs in memory and succeeding at multi-step tasks.

Family carers get workload tripled.

#AgingInPlace is difficult.
#ElderlyRelative's #TileApp reports her credit card is astray in a restaurant some distance from home.

Helpers keep getting timed out on website as they try to get a stop put on the credit card.
Phone call to #ANZ #Bank fails as the call centre worker's accent and low volume of speech makes communication with ElderlyRelative ineffective.

Don't know how much audiobook performers get paid. Maybe it isn't enough to get correct pronounciation happening for unfamilar words?

Suspect this is more shit service and fuck the customer over by #Uber failing to provide adequate support to the workers they are exploiting.

Some lousy real estate is trying for half the bond. And my #ElderlyRelative says that they've only got disturbed sleep (and not frequent and disruptive memory lapses that are sucking up the support time.)

Been running the #ComputerTechnologyMaze today.

1. Changed mobile network provider away from #Optus. (One account down, one to go. Even low expectations aren't met.) Trouble free, quick pay of the money.
2. Helped an #ElderlyRelative buy a very large display phone / phablet / tablet with telephony-voice-calls using an online payment site - took 90 minutes to get probably through, with 2 unwanted extra phones left in cart and never received the verification SMS.
Waste of time. ...

#ElderlyRelative on the phone to #Optus helpline trying to find out why Optus is saying "You have insufficient credit" when she tries to make an international call.

Volume of waiting music is about 5 times that of the recorded voices.

@vfrmedia I've recently had this discussion. To my #ElderlyRelative a "file" is a place you put documents.

Letters and other documents are put into files, and those files are put into a filing cabinet.

So calling a lump of data a "file" is *deeply* confusing ... the metaphor is already a bad one, even before you talk to people who never worked in an office.

My confidence that these things are adequately tested for usability by the frailer aged is low, very low.

Had been thinking that my #ElderlyRelative's short term memory had declined to around 30 seconds for topics which they are stressed about.

Now seeing the possibility that the info is not even being attended to at all.

Will try, "Please listen carefully and then repeat the following three times; The cash is in my handbag."

And even follow the third repetition with "Where is the cash?"

I'm looking for a phablet (tablet with SIM slot so it can make phone calls) with a 8 inch or larger screen for a blind #ElderlyRelative.

Needs to be Android, with recent Android version.
Prefer still receiving manufacturer updates.

The screen needs to have significant width when in portrait mode - not be long and narrow.. Say roughly the length-width ratio of a piece of A4 paper.

Any suggests?
