Israele ha stanziato quasi 730 milioni di dollari per rifarsi il trucco. La cifra andrebbe letta lentamente, come si legge un referto di un'autopsia. Settecentotrenta milioni per la hasbara, la vecchia arte statale di chiamare spiegazione ciò che somiglia sempre di più a lavaggio industriale della colpa. Settecentotrenta milioni per prendere le rovine di Gaza, le fosse comuni, gli arti amputati, i neonati morti di fame, i medici torturati, i giornalisti uccisi, e trasformarli in un problema di percezione. Per mandare anche sciami di bot sotto i nostri post che denunciano i crimini chamandoci per questo antisemiti.
Per Tel Aviv il disastro ormai si trova nell’immagine, mica nel genocidio. Nel danno reputazionale, non nelle pile di cadaveri di bambini, donne, anziani. Ma anche e soprattutto nella perdita di consenso presso gli studenti americani.
Bisogna capirli, Il bambino palestinese ridotto a polvere diventa una difficoltà comunicativa. La madre che stringe un sacco bianco, la pietà di Gaza, diventa cattiva pubblicità.
A questo serve il denaro. A comprare distanza tra l’occhio e la l'elaborazione di ciò che vediamo.
La cifra dice più della propaganda stessa. Se servono 730 milioni per convincere il mondo che stai agendo civilmente, forse il mondo ha già capito. Se devi pagare influencer, agenzie, campagne digitali, consulenti, esperti di reputazione, tecnici dell’opacità e sacerdoti del danno d’immagine, allora forse, dico forse eh, la menzogna ha perso la sua antica agilità.
La hasbara, in fondo, nasce da una presunzione coloniale antichissima. Il palestinese può morire, purché la sua morte venga raccontata da altri. Può essere affamato, bombardato, incarcerato, spogliato del nome, purché la frase finale resti nelle mani del carnefice. Israele investe centinaia di milioni proprio per questo. Vuole amministrare il dopo. Vuole decidere il lessico del cadavere.
Per anni ha funzionato. Per i media funziona ancora, anche se dopo centinaia di migliaia di morti, 7 fronti aperti di guerra e mai chiusi, una crisi energetica globale, qualcosa scricchiola. Ma ci provano ancora i media. Sono pagati per farlo. “Autodifesa”. “Danni collaterali”. “Scudi umani”. “Guerra complessa”. “Unica democrazia”. “Errore tragico”, "esercito più morale del mondo". Il repertorio era lì, pronto, servile, già impacchettato per editorialisti con la schiena morbida e memoria corta. Poi Gaza dopo 3 anni ha rotto un po' il giochetto. Le immagini sono arrivate prima dei comunicati. I padri hanno riconosciuto i figli dai vestiti. Le donne hanno scavato con le mani. I medici hanno operato senza anestesia. I sopravvissuti hanno filmato la propria fine con una lucidità insopportabile.
A quel punto Israele ha scoperto che la realtà costa cara. Molto più cara della menzogna ordinaria.
Quasi 730 milioni per risalire dal sangue alla brochure. Per trasformare una questione di diritto internazionale in storytelling governativo. Per sostituire la domanda politica con l’estetica della reputazione. Per convincere il pubblico occidentale che l’orrore, adeguatamente editato, può ancora diventare “contesto”.
E invece qualcosa si è incrinato.
Negli Stati Uniti, che per decenni hanno fornito a Israele copertura diplomatica, armamenti e indulgenza morale, la simpatia automatica si è consumata. I sondaggi registrano ciò che le piazze avevano già detto. Una parte crescente dell’opinione pubblica guarda Israele senza il velo sacrale che lo proteggeva. Vede uno Stato armato fino ai denti, vedono anche loro, miracolo, uno stato terrorista (come il proprio del resto)
Ed è proprio questo che spaventa.
La hasbara del 2026 sarà dunque una gigantesca operazione contro la vista. Un tentativo di mettere cataratte artificiali all’Occidente. Una fabbrica di nebbia pagata con denaro pubblico. Una guerra supplementare, condotta dopo le bombe, dentro le redazioni, sugli schermi, nei motori di ricerca, nei campus, negli algoritmi, nelle bocche di chi ripeterà formule preparate altrove credendo di pensare.
Il problema, per Israele, è che il sangue ha una pessima qualità per i pubblicitari, tende a macchiare e si lava malissimo.
Certo puoi comprare pagine, contratti, inserzioni, dossier, campagne coordinate. Ma l'abominio, la violenza quotidiana restano. E quella bandierina con la stella di David simboleggerà morte, terrore, per tanti tanti anni, come una svastica.
