  1. @jeffjarvis I remember Jay Leno’s “Jaywalk Allstars” segments when he corralled people on the street and asked them questions any third grader could answer. The responses were hilarious and cringe. Obviously Leno cherry-picked results, but the real gut punch is that people this dumb could even be found. With today’s non-scientific #focusGroups and #Polls, go meta — ask what is the real purpose? Is there an agenda or are the people running it just stupid? You’ll find both.

  2. I am not a fan of typical focus groups: moderator presiding over group discussions. However, I find clients still ask. I try to steer them towards interviews or dynamic workshop experiences. Nevertheless, I appreciate this academic research on removing the moderator and allowing the discussion to flow. This is something to consider in situations where the topic won't make someone feel vulnerable but open to conversation

  3. Taking open access to the next level, by giving control to researchers, instead of to academic publishers

Back in February 2022, Walled Culture wrote about diamond open access (OA), perhaps the “purest” form of open access publishing, since there are no charges for either the reader or the researcher. In that post, I mentioned an excellent 2021 report on diamond OA, published by the open access group cOAlition S. The group has been doing great work in promoting open …

  4. (How much do youth know about #ClimateChange ? And where can #educators do better including #BlackVoices in the climate change discussion?

It's these questions a new project targeting #Black #WindsorEssex #Ontario #students aims to answer, as a series of #FocusGroups kick off exploring these and other questions about #climate change and #environmental #racism )

  5. Rewatching The Thick of It episode with the focus group of one (“How did it play with the focus groups?” “She loved it”… “Why did you say ‘she’?!”) - and the thing that most sticks out is Ollie saying ‘94% [of the focus groups] approve or strongly approve [of the policy]’: which feels a *worse* misuse of #FocusGroups

  7. #USA #SocialMedia #FocusGroups #Twitter #UserResearch #Facebook #TikTok: "In the discussions, participants described how platforms served different purposes for them and helped them connect with different audiences. One participant described looking for specific things on TikTok, while another used it mostly to disconnect from life’s pressures; another turned to Twitter to follow politics; still others mentioned using platforms for entertainment or as a way to find solutions to problems they were dealing with.

Several highly engaged users described Facebook as a place to connect and interact with others, and one woman discussed how she uses different platforms for different groups of people in her life. A range of platforms came up throughout the discussions, including some beyond those the research initially set out to explore."

  8. Interesting #PrePrint by @milahall et al!

Feedback to therapists based on ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data collected before psychological therapy:
    psyarxiv.com/xjb8m/

Patients recorded EMA data (2 weeks; 4 pings per day; psyarxiv.com/8deyj/) and therapists were provided with a network model, a sleep diagram & a list of reported difficult events.

In #FocusGroups therapists provided insights into how to further personalise data for clinical application.
