Rewatching The Thick of It episode with the focus group of one (“How did it play with the focus groups?” “She loved it”… “Why did you say ‘she’?!”) - and the thing that most sticks out is Ollie saying ‘94% [of the focus groups] approve or strongly approve [of the policy]’: which feels a *worse* misuse of #FocusGroups…

I’ve seen (understandable) concerns about surveillance, but given who’s involved (and the specialist tech) I don’t think it’d be rolled out at scale in that way: it sounds more of a ‘test-screening’ set-up… (I believe they have something similar at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics).

@akstuhl @andy I started my #audienceresearch career in radio, and have some funny stories of focus groups, listener feedback if that's helpful.

We noticed that some of our smartest customers were searching the same audiences every month.

Why?

Because they wanted to see how these audiences' behaviors were changing.
