2/ Footnote on the terminology problem.

You've probably heard me say many times that the term "gold OA" original referred to #OpenAccess delivered by #journals, regardless of the journal's business model, as opposed to "green OA", which was delivered by repositories. Hence, gold OA could charge #APCs or not charge APCs. What we now call #DiamondOA was a species of #GoldOA.

But the term has definitely drifted and now most people use it to refer only to APC-based OA and to exclude no-APC or diamond OA. I don't like this drift, and I fought it, in part because it invited misinterpretation of early writings about OA. But I accept the drift because it's a fact of current usage. In its report Springer Nature uses "gold OA" in the new sense, and I use the term in the same sense when discussing the report. Normally, to avoid ambiguity and confusion, I don't use the term at all.

1/ #SpringerNature just published a report showing certain download and citation benefits of "gold" #OpenAccess. (I'm linking to the executive summary.)

But it's very misleading, even dishonest, in one respect. It shows that #GoldOA articles are downloaded and cited more than non-OA articles. But it attributes this to the fact that they are gold OA (charging #APCs), not to the fact that they are OA. Because it didn't test no-APC or #DiamondOA journals, attributing the download and citation benefits to the APC business model is unjustified and deceptive.

It also says that the gold OA model supports "greater equity" because it allows more downloads than non-OA models in low-income countries. But that kind of equity belongs to all flavors of OA. The report never mentions that APCs severely reduce equity by excluding authors who cannot afford to pay.

Update. Another article made it through peer review (at Springer) leaving the false impression in many passages that all #OpenAccess journals charge #APCs and that all or most APCs are to be paid by authors out of pocket. This despite the fact that it acknowledges the existence of no-APC #GreenOA and #DiamondOA, and the existence of APC funds other than the authors' pockets. It just doesn't let these acknowledgements change or qualify sweeping language in other parts of the article.

For example, the title and abstract talk about the high costs to authors of OA as such, when they're really about APC-based OA. Table 2 refers to the pros and cons to junior faculty of OA as such, when it's really about the pros and cons of APC-based OA.

It's so easy to say APC-based OA when you mean APC-based OA. It's so wrong to say OA without qualification when you mean APC-based OA.

The article by Mohamed Zinelabidine, a musicologist, musician and professor, focuses on Tunisian and Eastern musical culture and its links with philosophy. Paula Martinez Takegami’s article, meanwhile, focuses on Dance-Movement Therapy. Her approach, informed by her experience as a migrant woman from the Global South, offers a reflection that is both instructive and poetic.

Two other articles focus more directly on music therapy: Wassim Jomaa addresses the concept of recovery, which is already established in psychiatry and psychosocial rehabilitation but remains underdeveloped in music therapy; and Charlotte Guy’s article, based on a presentation given at the Clinical Study Days held by the Nantes Institute of Music Therapy in March 2026, explores the notions of non-verbal communication, synchronisation, empathy and reactive countertransference in music therapy.

Taken as a whole, this issue offers complementary perspectives on cultural diversity, arts therapies and contemporary clinical challenges in music therapy. 🎼

Vladimir Moskovkin proposes an interesting "reform model for scholarly communication that combines elements of centralized access —based on adapting the Soviet VINITI experience to the digital environment— with decentralized Diamond Open Access platforms."

@egonw "Once they have critical mass, they will start charging non-zero APCs." - it very disappoining to recently find out that RSC's only #DiamondOA journal, Chemical Science, was flipped to gold. So it's not just a commercial journal strategy (although there are MANY examples of those). This was very disappointing!

I completely support the message about preprints.

But please don't perpetuate the myth that all or even most #OpenAccess journals charge #APCs. Most do not charge APCs (#DiamondOA). And OA repositories never charge APCs (#GreenOA).

As of today, the Directory of Open Access Journals (#DOAJ @DOAJ) lists 23,131 peer-reviewed #OpenAccess journals, of which 14,347 charge no #APCs. Hence, 62% of these OA journals are no-fee or #DiamondOA.

You can get the latest raw numbers any time you want on the DOAJ front page, and the percentage is an easy calculation. Please correct people who say or assume that all or even most OA journals charge APCs. Most do not.
