  1. Follow-up blog post! Now we've described research fatigue and the problems it can cause, how can you design research that avoids it?

  2. The inability of large numbers of otherwise reasonably decent people to relinquish #X is yet another demonstration of the triumph of #quantitative standards over #qualitative considerations in #contemporarysociety.

  3. Department of #Sociology, University of #Oxford are looking for two #Postdoc Research Fellows (one quant, one qual), for a full-time, fixed-term position for up to four years! #job #academia #quantitative #qualitative #research

  4. RE: flipboard.com/@wsj/business-b1

“Instead of paying humans to join focus groups and complete surveys, #Auru uses thousands of #AI agents, or bots, to simulate human responses. It feeds #demographic and psychographic information into its models to create human profiles that match clients’ needs, and the results those bots spit out are being used for product #development, #pricing, identifying new customers and political #polling.”

Researchers have warned about the inaccuracies of treating #LLMs as human proxies (doi.org/10.1007/s10462-025-112), but I wouldn’t be surprised #languageModels beat #qualitative interpretation of non-representative focus groups.

  9. If you write an autoethnogaphy with someone else, that's "Collaborative Autoethnography".

Here's a slide show I prepared based on the book by Chang, Ngunjiri, and Hernandez (2013). This will introduce you to a range of models for completing an autoethnography with collaborators.

  10. Are you interested in autoethnography? Here is a slide show I made to introduce others to autoethnography and prepare them to begin working on a collaborative research project. It is an adaption of Heewon Chang's "Autoethnography as Method" (2008).

  11. Awesome! Our new paper in #DHQ has been published!

It discusses three measures of #keyness (or #distinctiveness) when applied to #subgenres of the #French #novel.

The twist is that we perform a #qualitative #evaluation of the measures by relating each list of keywords to a set of characteristics of each subgenre built from reading scholarly publications on the subgenres.

Bottom line: choosing a measure makes a huge difference!

  12. I'm co-facilitating an amazing and fun workshop in Edinburgh on doing qualitative analysis differently, Nov 13-14th. Sign up or get in touch if you want more info!

  13. Yup, GenAI is really bad at qualitative analysis:

"LLM chatbots consistently failed to code the data efficiently, accurately, reliably and comprehensively, or identify meaningful themes. ChatGPT, and the Qual-AI products built on it, are simply not designed nor fine-tuned to perform even the lower-order analytical tasks of searching and coding text"

  15. Recent updates to Quirkos Web have improved performance in larger projects, and added speaker identification to our automated transcription service!

  16. 'Generative AI and Broken Futures' in Qualitative Inquiry details an #AI #research that takes #qualitative fieldwork and generates broken visions of futures which participants then 'fix' with their realistic, ground-truth-led understandings of the realities of their industry.

  17. Running a very weird and wonderful workshop in Edinburgh this November: on creative and unusual ways to approach qualitative analysis, complete with wine tasting, and art appreciation!

Tickets now open, but places limited!

  19. Webinar: "Qualitative Open #Research: Meaningful Exchange and Mutual Learning."

Michelle Jamieson and Nicki Lisa Coole will present on what #qualitative open research means and how #positionality statements, a technique used by many qualitative researchers, can help opening up research processes independent of research methodologies.

    Date: 16 October 2025
    Time: 10-12 am (Amsterdam Time)

  20. #Preregistration in #qualitative #research is still less common than in academic fields applying quantitative methods. However, it has benefits for the entire academic community. One publication that covers the topic in detail is Tamarinde L. Haven & Dr. Leonie Van Grootel (2019). Preregistering qualitative

  21. On 26 September at 14 hrs, we* are co-organizing the #workshop: "Positionality statements: a tool to open Your research".

A lot of attention within the #OpenScience debate has been given to sharing research materials. This workshop focuses on opening up and sharing the decisions and assumptions underlying the research process of why, what and how studies are conducted. The event is aimed at both #qualitative and #quantitative researchers.

  22. Once again experimenting with open source #CAQDAS for #qualitative analyses. Some always surface, but then disappear for lack of support.

Anyone have any more to add to this list? So far:

taguette.org - Simple but very effective, way to get students to understand coding
github.com/ccbogel/QualCoder/ - looks more robust, experimenting
    requal.app - promising, based on R

  23. Save-the-Date for our #webinar "Qualitative #OpenResearch: Meaningful Exchange and Mutual Learning. During this event, we will hear from two speakers about obstacles and opportunities for qualitative open research.

The event is organized in collaboration with the Dutch-Belgian Context Network for #qualitative methodology.

We will share the registration link shortly via our newsletter as well as on our social media.
