"Well, no one checks."

That was the response I got from a PhD student after running her draft thesis through CitationLab.

The report revealed a massive structural failure: over 41% of her in-text citations were missing from the bibliography. She chose not to fix it, successfully submitted her thesis, and passed without a single issue.

She was right. No one truly checks.

The gatekeepers have stopped caring. Reference integrity has gone for good.

A doctoral student recently came with a weird question: their supervisor told them that "examiners would be reassured" by seeing many connections on LinkedIn.

I find appalling that West universities are so silent about this, and many still cooperating with Israeli universities, while schools of arts and humanities like the one I'm doing my PhD fill their mouth of "class struggle, decoloniality and [insert your favourite academic leftwing jargon].

I'm regularly thinking that it would be useful to have a tool that helps me find articles that cite a paper to contradict (or at least "contrast") its result.

It seems that scite [1] does this but they requires a pretty steep subscription given that I'm not sure how reliable their tool is and that they also advertise a chatbot...

I really enjoyed @Felienne's narrative about narratives about Computer Science yesterday. She applied some of the ideas presented in the Glaciers, Gender and Science paper (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0309132515623368) to her experiences in the Computer Science / Programming Languages communities. She's also starting a reading club to brainstorm the meaning (and the name?) of the field of "Computer Science".

When I started my pre-Master in Computer Science, I had no experience with programming, command lines, git, Linux, ssh, ...

The pre-Master consisted of Bachelor-level courses from all three Bachelor years. Hence, from day 1, I had to be able to program at the level of a 3rd year Bachelor student, in multiple programming languages.

Unsurprisingly, this was a steep learning curve for me. Being surrounded by people who had been writing code since they were 8 years old contributed massively to my sense of insecurity and anxiety. Being surrounded by mostly men, who in some cases really felt the need to put me in my place whenever I showed any sign of competence, really didn't help me feel better.

This has kinda stayed with me. Even though I sometimes encountered people who were way more clumsy than I was in working with these tools, I still felt massive imposter syndrome.

Just now, a software developer sat next to me as I typed commands into my terminal. Afterwards, he remarked that I clearly know my way around the command line.

I wouldn't say that I'm healed now, but this for sure felt like a win.

I actually asked about the role that luck plays in an industry career vs an academic career. Prof. Hoda corrected me, and said that it was more appropriate to talk about "opportunities" than luck. I think she has a point there.

Still, I feel like part of our success comes down to luck, and particularly the part of being born with a certain gender/ethnicity/neurotype/(dis)ability/citizenship/etc.

Anyway: what I like about prof. Hoda's point is that academia can be a bit of an ivory tower bubble, and "real" questions from industry can really ground, guide and inform your research.

Prof. Chechik talked about the differences between academic research and industry research. She gave some examples of times where she collaborated with industry, while still being able to do academic research.

I loved her outlook on supervision. Her research directions are in large part informed by the curiosity of her students.
