I kept feeling like I was behind yesterday, when it was barely past 9 AM. I was FINE. I followed up on emails, I got the household chores done, I got the garbage out.
I spent most of the morning working on the collage. I cut the fabric, trimmed it with pinking shears, wrapped it to the canvas and fastened it with novelty pushpins. I then printed the chosen photographs in different sizes and started playing with them. There was photo editing and re-sizing involved several times, but I think I have what I want. I need washi tape to fasten the photos to the fabric/canvas – I think that will work better than glue. Of course, I have to FIND the right washi tape today, but that’s today. I photographed the arrangement, just in case something shifts before it’s fastened down.
The photo for this day’s post is the fabric on the canvas, before I put the photos on it. The colors are similar to those used in the park where the photos were taken.
I dealt with a bunch of admin. I did some work on the play, but I’m behind where I’d like to be on it. I mean, I’d like the draft to be done, but we are not there yet. I submitted a different play to a company with whom I’d like to work next season. Did a little work on the Nina Bell series. Got out an LOI.
After all of that, I switched over to the ghostwriting. It was slow, due to research needs, but the work itself was solid. I am behind where I hoped to be, though. I won’t be able to make up much ground in today’s session, so I’ll have to do so tomorrow. I’m still on track to make the deadline, but I’d hoped to get it in a few days ahead.
I received two book review assignments from that client, so I have three to turn around in the coming week. I haven’t had much work from them these past months, so it’s welcome. I’d like to be able to invoice the batch by the middle of next week.
I cooked dinner, did the dishes, and got dressed for the evening. I drove up to Faith Church in Pownal, VT. My friend Molly gave a talk on Grace Greylock Niles, sponsored by the Pownal Historical Society. Grace was a local botanist, teacher, nurse, artist, and poet who lived in the area. As an independent woman fighting for her land against richer men with power in the community (such as a local judge and a doctor), she had a rough slog, and wound up living her last years in a mental health facility in Brattleboro. That’s an oversimplification of her fascinating story, but Molly’s essay will be in a literary magazine later this fall, and sometime next year, published as a stand-alone. Molly’s research process is always fascinating, and the way she humanizes people nearly lost to history is wonderful.
My friend Gloria from the gallery was there, as were several A4A cohort colleagues, along with people interested in local history and curious. It was a lovely evening.
It was still light enough for me to have a fairly stress-free drive back, although downtown was closed off for (yet another) festival. It’s great to see people out and about having fun.
My parking space was free, so I wiggled back into it, and headed upstairs for a cup of tea and some time with the cats before bedtime.
Day 3 of Legs Up the Wall pose. I slept better, but I still woke up at 3! Well, Charlotte woke me up at three, hurling a hairball. The cats are already shedding their summer fur and growing in the winter fur, so thank goodness we have a working vacuum again.
Morning routine was fine. I figured out some stuff in the free-write. I note in the margin to which project each day’s notes are relevant, which helps me find things. I do try to type up notes when appropriate every few weeks, and then I mark them in red. “T” means I typed it and it’s in the project file. A red checkmark means I used it in a piece (and sometimes didn’t need to type it for a project file). It makes the notebooks useable research repositories.
Today, I have an early meeting up at the Clarksburg Library about the upcoming author event, then it’s time to do the week’s grocery shopping and other errands (like finding washi tape). Tonight, I have a library trustee meeting, and then I’ll probably stop by the “social” the library is hosting, which will still be going on outside.
In between there, I will work on the collage, the play, and the ghostwriting. Tomorrow is a more focused day at the desk, if all things go to plan, without meetings and other interruptions.

We are Running Out of Weekends
Today is August 11th. We only have a few more weekends before Summer comes to an end. We need to come up with fun, summery things to do with those few remaining weekends. I brought this up to my wife and step daughter yesterday and this weekend is probably the last one we have free with my step daughter. Her weekends are booked pretty solid for the rest of the month and then next month she moves to California for school.
What should we do with our last weekend with all three of us?
I haven’t a clue, but I bet we’ll think of something.

Waning Moon
Pluto, Neptune, Saturn, Chiron Retrograde
Cloudy and oppressively humid
We’re almost at the weekend, and I hope you have a very good one.
I did a bunch of admin yesterday morning, including paying bills, and writing a follow-up note to the doctor about my mom’s surgery to clarify a few things.
I picked up a prescription for my mom, in preparation for her surgery (even though it’s not for a month), and did the big early-month stock-up grocery shopping, and a couple of other errands. Of course, I completely forgot to go by the post office, so I will have to do that today. It was really humid, and I couldn’t think straight.
Home, hauled everything up the stairs, put it away. Tried to get some work done. #FreelanceFriends chat was fun.
For the ghostwriting, I threw out most of what I had and started over. I stayed up as long as I needed to, in order to get it done. I have to do a final polish this morning (because it has to go out today), and make sure I dealt with all the notes, but, fingers crossed, they will accept this one, so I can invoice. I start the next assignment either later today or on Monday.
I could not face cooking, so I dug out some chili from the freezer and that was supper. It was good. This chili recipe freezes well.
It was hot and sticky last night. Charlotte woke me up early, and I got up, so I could do most of the morning routine before going to the laundromat.
Did two loads at the laundromat and filled up the gas tank on my way home. Chop wood, carry water, all those mundane tasks that keep things running. Such a glamorous life, being a writer!
This morning, as I mentioned above, I’m doing a final proof on the ghostwriting and getting it out the door. Then I will work on the play, and maybe the article. I also have to work on the program for the reading in October and get out a book review.
We were supposed to run some errands in Williamstown and Bennington, but it’s supposed to be stormy today, so I will put it off. I will, however, fold and put away laundry. This evening, unless it’s wildly stormy, I will trundle down to Future Labs Gallery for the month’s opening. I might go over to Mosaic Center, too, for their opening. We will see how my energy level and the weather holds up.
I have to set up a meeting with the library per the author event in September, and sign off that my name is correct on the flyer.
Tomorrow, I’m going to a showcase in Williamstown for WAM. Sunday we might do the errands we were supposed to do today. We’ll see how the weather holds up. Next week is busy – good busy, but still busy, so it would be good to have some downtime over the weekend.
And to finally put the replacement vacuum into use! I also want to do some planning sketches for the art pieces. I’m not sure I can do the one in time for next week’s deadline, but I like the idea, so I might work on it for the December or January show instead. I will try to work on it this weekend, but not kick myself if I can’t get it done. I have to look through my fabric stash and see what I can use for these various projects, and what I still need to source. Doing that before I go to the fabric shops in Williamstown and Bennington is probably a good idea.
I hope you have a great weekend, and we’ll catch up next week.

Sunny and warm
Happy mid-week! Hope yours is going well.
It was difficult to concentrate in the morning, before heading out to the specialist appointment, but I managed to get household chores and some admin done.
We left a little after 10. The drive down was lovely as far as weather. The traffic was annoying, especially around Pittsfield, but that was to be expected. We arrived early, and they took us in early.
It’s a cancerous lesion. It has to be surgically removed, and will need a skin graft. They will do it as an in-office procedure under local anesthesia (at her age, one wants to avoid full anesthesia when possible). It will happen right after Labor Day weekend, and there will be wound care and pain management for two weeks until her follow-up. It’s all scheduled to fit around another commitment I have at the end of September out of town, and all works out. Not the outcome we hoped for, but also not as serious as it could be. They do a lot of these types of procedures in-office every week, and it only takes about an hour.
The surgery is the day before the author festival at the library, so I will have to go into September very organized. It’s all do-able, and the dates are all coordinating, so it’s fine.
We stopped at Chocolate Springs on the way home (it’s in the same complex) to get some treats and also an iced chocolate drink for me. That iced chocolate was perfection – it was exactly as I’d imagined. We made a stop at a thrift store in Pittsfield, and I found a pair of stuffed unicorns for one of the art pieces, well within budget. We also stopped at Adams Fresh Market for a blueberry pie.
Home to find the vacuum had been delivered while we were gone (of course it had), but it was patiently waiting by the door.
Got everything upstairs and unpacked and disinfected the stuffed unicorns (don’t ask).
Worked on the ghostwriting. I have to dig deep today. I invoiced for the other assignment, which is good timing. They paid today, which is even better, and means I can finish paying the month’s bills.
I didn’t make it to yoga. I heated up leftovers for dinner, and tried to do some work in the evening, before I switched over to reading. I’ve tried several books by a very popular cozy fantasy author. I liked the first one somewhat, but the other two I’ve read/am reading are just too cutesy in an annoying way for me, so I will stop reading.
I woke up at 3 AM, moved to the sofa, petted Bea, and fell asleep until 6:30, when Charlotte woke me by using me as a trampoline. Tessa Was Not Amused. Everyone was fed, chores done, morning routine, but I’m an hour and a half late so far today, and will have to make up for it somewhere. Tessa has also decided that my desk chair is the only place she can possibly be comfortable today, so I may need to take the laptop and work elsewhere.
I have to do a library run this morning, work on the play and, especially, the ghostwriting, pick up the CSA this afternoon, and the lit committee meeting that was postponed last week is now tonight. So there’s lots to do and no room for me to faff.
Have a good one!

Waning Moon
Pluto, Neptune, Saturn Retrograde
Cloudy and warm
We’re at the end of another week AND another month. I can’t believe tomorrow will be August. The light is already changing, both in the morning and in the evenings. I already switched out some candle colors and put up the marigold garland across the fireplace.
Online meditation was good, and Charlotte was happy. We are now on break until Sept. 10. I will still maintain my 40-minute sit every morning and my 20-minute sit at bedtime.
The lovely person who received my misdelivered package left it at my door either in the night or yesterday morning. I’m so glad I don’t have to fight with the post office and the company about this! When I tried to file the paperwork with USPS yesterday, the form said I had to wait 7 days. I could have sworn the previous day, it said 24 hours. But I’m glad I don’t have to do it at all.
After breakfast, I loaded the car and headed out. I dropped off the vacuum at the FedEx dropoff spot, then did a light grocery shop and ran some other errands, including the library. Home, hauled everything up the stairs, and played with the cats. I did two batches of vegetable stock in the slow cooker over the late morning into the early afternoon.
The #FreelanceFriends chat went well, and it flew by! Hosting always feels fast, because there’s posting the questions, and then making sure to respond to everyone.
After lunch, I finished jarring up the veg stock, washed all the dishes, etc. I have way too much stock in the freezer at this point, and I still have two bags of veg bits that have to go into the next batch. Yes, I was procrastinating on the ghostwriting. But I got to it and started digging it. My opinions on it don’t really matter. It just needs to get done. I made some decent headway in the first few chapters, and thought through a few of the requested changes, which will help me in today’s session.
I tried to work on the play after, but ended up deleting everything I wrote, so I’m back to where I was yesterday.
Someone whom my mother nannied in England in the late 1940’s/early 1950’s sent an email with a bunch of questions. He’s a great grandfather now! It will take her a few days to pull those memories, if she even has the knowledge he wants of those times. They’ve been in touch regularly over the years, so it’s not like she doesn’t remember him. She was the nanny to him and his five siblings for six years.
I craved enchiladas for dinner last night, so that’s what I made!
It looks like Chewy is already sending the replacement vacuum, once they got confirmation I shipped off the one that doesn’t work.
The parking chaos is out of control. It’s to the point where I feel like I can’t ever use my car, because I won’t be able to get into my – or any – off-street spot THAT IS PART OF MY LEASE AGREEMENT. I can park on the street now, but when overnight street parking is forbidden as of Oct. 1, there will be a problem for the winter. The fact that the people who are supposed to deal with this won’t is aggravating.
This morning, we are going to Whitney’s. It’s the last day I can use the “Whitney’s Bucks” they gave us after we did our spring shopping, and I want to get some Black-eyed Susans. When we get back, I will work on the play and BETTING MAN, and then switch over to the ghostwriting. This play has a closer deadline than the radio series, so I had to push the radio series back to get this done.
This evening, I’m going to the closing of my colleagues’ show at FutureLabs. I missed the opening, being under the weather IN the weather of early July, so I will trot down to the closing tonight. Tomorrow is Lammas, a big day on my personal calendar. Sunday, I want to do a whole lotta nothing! Next week is busier than I would like it to be, so I need to prepare, mentally as much as physically. As much as I’m glad last Wednesday’s meeting got moved forward a week, it puts more pressure on me this week. And I have to take my mom down to Lenox for a specialist appointment late morning on Tuesday, so I lose most of the day with the prep and the travel time.
I hope you have a terrific weekend, and we’ll catch up on the other side.

Quiet Day
It has been a quiet Tuesday, apart from the huge thunderstorm that rolled through this afternoon and almost drown the entire state. There was some minor flooding on route 128 during my drive home. Just the odd lane that had a couple of inches of standing water. Just enough to make you think you were going to hydroplane your way right off the road.
Other than that, work was okay. The Red Sox 14 game winning streak is safe for the day as they were rained out. Bummer. I worked on some music for the 50 songs in 90 Days Challenge.
Mostly I am just starting to get psyched up for next week. I took the week off. Partly so we could go see Rush in New York, but that is only a couple of days. The rest of the time is just because my company has a max on the amount of Personal Time Off you can carry and I was just about to hit that max. Use it or lose it, you know? I’ve already worked my two days in the office so the last three days before my time off will all be working from home. I like the sound of that.
So for the most part, today has just been a kinda nothing day in a good way. Here’s hoping for more of the same tomorrow.

The Weekend is Coming
It is Friday afternoon. I still have a couple of hours before I finish my work day but it is time to start preparing for the glory that is the coming weekend. I have a few things I want to do and a few things I have to do.
First, the have-to-do’s…
I have to get a haircut. If I don’t get a haircut I am going to lose my freakin’ mind. I am probably a month overdue, if not more. I have to I have to I have to get a haircut.
I have to shave this fur off my face. My facial hair does not grow terribly fast but I am completely unable to deal with the itchy stage of beard growth. It’s been two weeks since last I shaved and oh my goodness the itch is driving me insane. I can’t stand it anymore. If I don’t shave this weekend I am going to go certifiably crazy.
Okay. Those are the things that I HAVE to do. How about the things that I want to do. Some of these wants are very close to needs, but I won’t go insane if I can’t get to them, I’ll just be somewhere between sad and pissed.
Music. Fifty songs in ninety days. I have to make serious progress on the few songs I have in progress at the moment. That includes writing lyrics, recording vocals, and recording various guitar parts. I want to dedicate some serious time to the music project.
Have a nice visit with my in-laws. They are coming over tomorrow afternoon. It should be a nice time.
Shoot a roll of 120 film for the Frugal Film Project. This one might tie in with the next one…
Go into Boston and see the Tall Ships. My beloved Bride, Jen threw this out as a possibility for Sunday. My step daughter, Bellana says she’s up for it too. I hadn’t even thought of it before this morning but now that it’s out there? I really want to do this. Like, big time want to do this. My cameras want me to do it too. Load up a roll of 120 in the Lubitel and a roll of 35mm in the N90 and a clean memory card in the Z5 and just go effin’ bonkers.
Do my best to try and sleep some, because I haven’t done very much of that over the past week.
There you have it. My hopes and plans for this weekend. It is less than two hours away. In the immortal words of Van Halen, I think the clock is slow.
