July 2026
July arrives, as usual, with one foot in the long grass and the other in a thundercloud.
This is the month of high summer, of heavy roses, restless skies, ripening fruit and strange light lingering late over the fields. It is a month that feels deceptively ordinary until you look at it sideways. Then the old signs begin to appear.
The swifts and swallows are screaming above the rooftops, the bees are drunk on clover, the hedgerows are thickening into green walls and the first whisper of harvest is waiting just behind the heat shimmer.
In the old almanacs, July was never just a month of sunshine. July was a month of watching. Watch the sky. Watch the crops. Watch the animals…
Watch the weather on St Swithin’s Day, because tradition says that if rain falls on 15 July, it will fall for forty days after. The story is tied to St Swithin of Winchester, whose bones were moved in 971, bringing, according to legend, a long and mournful storm. Whether saintly displeasure or simple English weather, the warning remains: never trust July just because it smiles.
The moon, too, keeps her own calendar. After the late June full moon, July wanes into darkness, with the new moon falling on 14 July, the first quarter on 21 July, and the full Buck Moon rising on 29 July.
In folklore, the Buck Moon belongs to antlers, growth, heat and wild strength – a fitting lantern for a month when the natural world seems almost too alive.
By mid-month, the Dog Days begin to settle over the land. Older English reckoning placed them from early July into August, when Sirius, the Dog Star, was associated with heat, fever, tempers, storms and madness.
These were the days when milk soured quickly, dogs were watched carefully, and people blamed the sky for all manner of human foolishness.
And then, just as the month begins to tip towards August, the heavens start throwing sparks. The Southern Delta Aquariids run from 12 July to 23 August, peaking around 30 July, while the Perseids begin stirring from 17 July onwards.
July, then, ends not quietly, but with meteors – small fragments of ancient debris burning bright above fields, rooftops and sleeping towns.
For me, languishing in the heat of Mysterious Towers, surrounded by rapidly growing felines and with nary a breeze to shift the accumulated kitten hair on the keyboard of my laptop, July feels like a waiting month.
We stand between the bright folklore of midsummer and the darker pull of late summer – harvest ghosts, haunted roads, old crimes, strange beasts in the fields, and the first faint shadow of autumn hiding beneath the green.
So this month, we will be looking backwards and sideways into old legends, unsolved mysteries and the strange little stories that cling to places long after the official histories have moved on.
Because July may be golden. But gold, as every old tale reminds us, is rarely innocent.
Stay Curious 🙂
