  5. The psychic structure of disciplinary imperialism

    From Sherry Turkle’s classic The Second Self pg 229-230:

    The first justification for AI’s invasions and colonization of other disciplines’ intellectual turf was a logic of necessity. The excursions into psychology and linguistics began as raids to acquire ideas that might be useful for building thinking machines. But the politics of “colonization” soon takes on a life of its own. The invaders come not only to carry off natural resources but to replace native “superstitions” with their “superior” world view. AI first declared the need for psychological theories that would work on machines. The next step was to see these alternatives as better—better because they can be “implemented,” better because they are more “scientific.” Being in a colonizing discipline first demands and then encourages an attitude that might be called intellectual hubris. You need intellectual principles that are universal enough to give you the feeling that you have something to say about everything. The AI community had this in their idea of program. Furthermore, since you cannot master all the disciplines that you have designs on, you need confidence that your knowledge makes the “traditional wisdom” of these fields unworthy of serious consideration. Here too, the AI scientist feels that seeing things through a computational prism so fundamentally changes the rules of every game in the social and behavioral sciences that everything that came before is relegated to a period of intellectual immaturity. And finally you have to feel that nothing is beyond your intellectual reach if you are smart enough.

  17. A mediation analysis attributed about one-third of the lower success rate for proposals by women in a #scienceFunding competition in the social sciences to the indirect effect of #disciplines, topics, and methods. Interviews with panel members further elucidated that this effect is driven by their disciplinary evaluation logic. #PeerReview can reproduce the hierarchy of disciplines and, through it, negatively affect the outcomes for women. doi.org/10.1177/00380385231163

  20. @terrillwelch What a #cool way of looking at it, thank you! That is very much how I see #Mastodon.

    Nothing that comes from within us is mutually exclusive. Why we think #ideas or #identities should be siloed into #disciplines is beyond me, as everything IS everything, all at once #interconnected. What an amazing #universe!

    Here's to #artistic and #intellectual #squatters everywhere! 🥂

  22. @noisyastronomer @academicchatter

    It’s actually across #disciplines (vs within them) that I think #ImpactFactors are most problematic, since disciplinary citation practices & publishing speed vary so immensely

    (My main fields, esp #sociology, sort of average out by being extremely slow—so at 5 yrs, an article might be just starting to show up in published lit—but also requiring a large number of #citations due to having few widely shared standards for good work, thus emphasizing “framing”)

  24. @Empiricism Sometimes I can be too subtle, other times too cryptic.

    My "added comments" would be just hoping to extend what I find to be valuable posts. Stronger critique or disagreement would (hopefully) be more obvious!

    I think the term #CognitiveDissonance isn't going away, nor should be. I think #CognitiveHarmony fits very well with it.

    When "solutions aren't clear" then we have a false state of harmony, no? [problem > solution > (harmony?) bias > correction > harmony!]

    So now we can see that 'truth' (as applied to #ScientificConsensus) plays a role, in addition to perception. [The #historic unsolved problem of perception of #consonance deals directly with the human side, where #perception & opinion reign. This perception of "sounds right/good" does not cross #cultural boundaries without its own dissonance.]

    So we have both #binary situations (T/F) and #trinary (and beyond), where there is no #ExcludedMiddle, no right/wrong. I'd like to invoke a #systemic description that can accommodate these different levels.

    Even if this is just meant for individuals, a #gradient, #quantitative style of #measurement could be a helpful addition to what you laid out. It can help us be more #adaptable, accepting of change or differences, not feeling 'stupid' when wrong (or viewing others through that lens), participate more effectively in #democratic & scientific #processes, etc.

    This is a #generalized enough idea that it is able to cross over into many, even disparate #disciplines. I think we align with the desire to improve existing #models, including the way they are communicated to the public.

  26. Another example of why I find "The Conversation" to be (more often) totally irrelevant and sometimes, like this, actively horrible.

    A very badly presented argument about #interdiscipinarity. Claims without warrant or justification. Held together with a paste of whining.

    Nothing in this article matches my experience or what I've learned actively researching these topics. #disciplines are usually the problem, not the solution.

    @sociology
    @linguistics
    @politicalscience

    Shouting out to any and all whose work is explicitly #interdisciplinary or using #HybridMethodology of one sort or another.

    I'm testing Guppe groups to foster discussions across instances -- and #disciplines and philosophies, if we're lucky :)

    I'd like to draw your attention to two new groups:
    1 - @interdisciplinarity
    2 - @communications

    Give a follow!

    Cheers
