  2. This is a great idea and important for the future of the #Fediverse. Reminds me of the strict requirements and high standards #Identity #Federations need to follow in order to join #eduGAIN. All of the legal templates are there, you just need to go through them, prepare them and whatever else required - if all goes well, your #IdFed and your members are internationally recognised and reap the benefits that come with that (e.g. trusted identity across other IdFeds/eduGAIN members). The Fediverse should continue being a community effort, but that doesn’t mean making it easy for big corpos to abuse it or make it their own.

  3. CW: Switching Mastodon federations

Copying my guide for moving Mastodon federations from my old vulpine.club account.

Multiple posts due to meow.social's limits. Sorry about that!

Lots of people are are #migrating #mastodon #federations right now, in large part because of the influx of new users from #twitter, and many instances just can't handle the load (understandably!).

To help out, be sure to import your follows. Once you set up the redirect, you can also move your followers.

But if two users from different #federations were to follow each other and discuss the same #hashtag, that post would then propegate to both instances. If other users on both #instances then do the same, it would lead to organic growth and discovery.

The thing is, people are currently isolated to their own. #instances with no discovery happening. Thus, the problem isn't automatically solved. It's just an endless deathloop at this time, and only #relays and #federations that act on it now can solve it. We basically need to manually do now what a larger user base would automatically do. Just imagine it like a neural network, still in its infancy stages of training and growing, and we need to shove it in the right direction in the beginning.

You are right, that would help the natural flow and reduce unnecessary data that will be propagated by entire #relays. It would allow for natural and organic connections to develop between #federations and make the entire process transaparent to users.

So, just as with most other things, the more user interaction, the better the experience.

But that makes me feel as if the apps that we use also need to catch up, because the suggestions and autocompletion of users when posting is really bad, while #hashtag completion is actually working very well in apps that I have tested.

  6. @MOULE I would love to know what your experience on your own #instance is. Is it too isolated or are relays helping to populate your timeline? #Mastodon can easily become isolated in #federations.

  7. @stux #socialdiscovery has suffered a bit although and requires the #extensive use of #hashtags to help spread the #word and have the same #reach.

This is possibly problematic because #hashtags aren't moderated at all, allowing other parties to infiltrate and overwhelm feeds by spamming irrelevant posts with a specific hashtag.

"That's the #freespeech," some would say. Well, others say it degrades the quality of your #timeline. Some would reply that you should just follow the people that you want and associate with #instances and #federations that you are interested in.

It is a difficult thing, and the idea of #groups as some has proposed might be a good idea. Because I myself don't see anything relevant in the #hashtags in the #mastodon app. Where an algorithm could help a bit, but then again, that information needs to be extracted from somewhere, again coming down to #privacy and #moderation.

I would like to see a page of hashtags people I follow are following.

  8. CW: long post, guide on moving Mastodon federations

Lots of people are are #migrating #mastodon #federations right now, in large part because of the influx of new users from #twitter, and many instances just can't handle the load (understandably!).

To help out, be sure to import your follows. Once you set up the redirect, you can also move your followers.

To start, go to your NEW instance and create an alias. You can do that by going to preferences, profile, appearance, then under "Moving from a different account" click on the option to create an alias. The alias will be your OLD account.

Next, go to your OLD account, preferences, import and export, and download your follows in CSV format. Then go to your NEW instance and then preferences, import and export, click on import, then upload that CSV file.

Finally, on your OLD instance, go to preferences, profile, appearance, and choose "Move to a different account." Here you can choose the new account and this will automatically move your followers. Note that it can take a little while depending upon server load.

While not required, I do recommend donating to your federation if you can. This helps a lot!

This was a very basic guide, but hope it helps! If you need any assistance, feel free to ask. :blobfoxhappy:
