My 10¢ as a historian of Indigenous-settler relations: Kinew's statement is a radical challenge to the status quo. Abolishing the Indian Act would be a profound shift in Canadian politics. It's a piece of legislation that, while nearly universally disliked if not despised, has long seemed wholly impervious to repeal. While it didn't create modern First Nations activism like some historians used to argue, the last attempt to do away with it - the 1969 White Paper from the government of Trudeau père - certainly gave activists a platform that was far more durable and visible to settler society than anything they'd had before.

"Gone Forever? Iran Drone Strikes Cause Permanent Data Loss in Middle East

Amazon AWS customers in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates have permanently lost data following multiple waves of Iranian strikes, which began in March of this year, on several data centers.

Companies all over the world rely on cloud storage to keep their data safe long term, but just because something is in the cloud doesn't mean it's necessarily safe forever.

Amazon AWS customers in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates have permanently lost data following multiple waves of Iranian strikes, which began in March of this year, on several data centers. The strikes, which targeted multiple Gulf states, were carried out in retaliation for American and Israeli strikes on Iran.

Bahrain was more severely impacted than the UAE. Amazon was unable to fully restore access in all three of Bahrain's availability zones—clusters of data centers built to serve a specific area—compared to just one zone, mec1-az2, in the UAE."

The Trump administration on Monday removed 14 security, privacy and transparency requirements for vendors of electronic health records, with the goal of streamlining government regulations and supporting the development of new technologies.

A long-awaited final rule from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology eliminated 14 of 60 criteria used to certify electronic record-keeping systems sold by companies such as Epic and Oracle. Seven other criteria were substantially revised.

In many cases, the administration eliminated or revised certification requirements over the objections of commenters who raised concerns that the changes would undermine the security and privacy of sensitive health information, or undermine efforts to ensure the safety of products that rely on artificial intelligence.

  6. How it looks like things are going and how it feels are not the same thing.

Life has been looking good on the outside lately, but feeling? Not so much. Too much running around, getting sick, private disappointments.

    A reminder that:
    - visibility isn’t the same as impact
    - every accomplishment has a ton of work (and failures) underneath it
    - too much is too much, even when a lot of it is good

So I’m thankful for a well-timed girls’ trip. I was so fried I didn’t even want to bring my laptop. (I did, just in case... but it never came out of my bag.) One day of torrential rain, so we stayed in drinking tea and spa-ing. One gorgeous day of a long walk and more spa.

Here’s a picture of insides and outsides finally matching: hair a mess, no makeup, somewhere beautiful, having a great time with friends.

  7. A UN inquiry finds that Israeli authorities and forces committed crimes against humanity in the West Bank, including extermination, torture, rape and other sexual violence. It also finds that Israel continues to commit genocide in Gaza.

Here are paragraphs 58 to 61 of the report’s conclusions, quoted in full, with the footnote marker omitted:

    III. Conclusions

    58. Since the 1947-48 war, Israel has continuously striven to expand territorially and displace Palestinians through violence. The intentional killing and harming of Palestinians have clear demographic and ethnic considerations that stem from Israel’s colonising policies: seizing maximum land while minimizing the Palestinian population in relation to size, autonomy and viability. Such policies originate in historical practices and patterns of action and have resulted in the excessive and discriminatory application of lethal force, displacing and killing Palestinians over several generations, causing life-long physical or mental harm and disabilities. The Commission has repeatedly called for an end to the occupation, which has been ruled unlawful under international law, and an end to the cycle of increasing violence. Palestinians must be able to realize their right of self-determination.

    59. Israeli state violence has accelerated since October 2023 and has, since the establishment of Israel, never claimed or impacted as many lives in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Over 75,000 Palestinians across the Occupied Palestinian Territory have been killed since 7 October 2023, including at least 21,500 children, and 11,000 women. While Israeli authorities and security forces continue to commit genocide in Gaza, the situation in the West Bank has deteriorated drastically. Israeli military operations, complemented by sustained settler violence, form part of a widespread and systematic attack against the civilian population in the West Bank since 7 October 2023. Accordingly, the Commission concludes that the Israeli authorities and forces have committed the crimes against humanity of extermination, torture, rape and other forms of sexual violence in the West Bank, as well as persecution based on intersecting discriminatory grounds, with nationality, race and ethnicity at its core.

    60. Sexual violence as a tactic of war has been used to displace, subjugate and destabilize the Palestinian people by humiliating and punishing on individual and collective levels. It includes the gravest forms, such as rape, reproductive violence and other forms of sexual violence also amounting to torture. People of all genders, ages and sexual orientations have been targeted for being Palestinian or due to their perceived political affiliation and support for the rights of Palestinians. The prevalence of sexual violence has been and continues to be widely reported, and met with almost complete impunity, indicating a tacit support of such practices by the Israeli authorities. Impunity for gender-based crimes against Palestinians indicates unwillingness, rather than inability, to act, underscoring the systematic and structural nature of the discrimination against Palestinians. Those responsible need to be punished to dismantle the permissive policy currently in place to guarantee non-recurrence.

    61. Across the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Israeli forces deliberately killed and caused serious bodily and mental harm to Palestinian children on account of their status as Palestinian children. The Commission concludes that Israeli authorities and forces committed age-based persecution against Palestinian children in the West Bank, as they did in Gaza, which is a crime against humanity. The recurrence and widespread nature of attacks causing grave physical injuries and psychological harm demonstrate that the harm inflicted on children is not incidental or collateral to the broader violence affecting civilian population, but forms part of a pattern of intentional violence directed against Palestinian children. Notably, the absence of accountability has entrenched a discriminatory system in which violations and crimes against Palestinian children are repeatedly committed with impunity, normalized, and left without effective remedy or redress.”

  8. “Over the years, we have gotten very used to getting bizarre emails from sources. Many allege to have uncovered some sort of CIA conspiracy, or suggest that they are being tracked by the government. Many of these emails are long and meandering, are sent to dozens of email addresses at once, and generally make no sense. The emails we’ve been getting recently aren’t like that. They are emailing us specifically because they have a tech problem, don’t know where to turn, and ChatGPT is telling them to contact us, is writing the email for them, and is compiling ‘evidence packets,’ ‘forensic trails,’ ‘evidence dossiers,’ ‘original correspondence,’ a ‘bounded set of primary records,’ and a series of questions we are supposed to investigate.”

    I hated that picture.

  10. Observing Nature

Starting with astronomy, it felt that we are so close to understanding the workings of the Universe, that 13.8 billion years seemed minuscule. We can’t even imagine comprehending this time. 100 years of human lifespan is nothing in comparison. It took millions of years of evolution after the formation of Earth for life to become this complex. It hasn’t even been 300 years since the Industrial Age began, and look how far we’ve come. However, it’s very naive, though quite easy to fall into this trap today, to think that we can build technologies that can give us endless dominance over nature. We haven’t lived long enough to even observe nature in its entirety. There’s a lot to explore about what “innovations” can be borrowed from it, and these aren’t running out anytime soon. Science originated from observation, and there’s a lot of it yet to be done.

  11. Every engineer running autonomous agent loops knows the in-context reflection drill. The agent runs a bash script, fails on an obscure permission flag or an unquoted path, sees the error in stderr, reflects on what went wrong, and fixes it on the second try.

The task finishes green. You log the run, close the thread, and move on.

Tomorrow morning, the same agent hits the exact same edge case in a fresh session and makes the exact same mistake all over again.

In-context reflection is a temporary patch. It burns context tokens, bloats the prompt across long tool sessions, and evaporates the millisecond the execution context clears. The traditional alternative, full-model fine-tuning, is a non-starter for everyday errors. Nobody is spinning up a multi-GPU training run every afternoon to update base weights, and doing so risks catastrophic forgetting across existing tool workflows.

A research team from Princeton University and Meta FAIR just published a practical middle ground. In their paper, Don't Forget What You Just Learned: Self-Directed Repair Turns Agent Mistakes Into Lasting Lessons (arXiv:2610.31846), Yuval Kansal, Karen Ullrich, Polina Kirichenko, Ilia Kulikov, Niraj K. Jha, Mohammad Pezeshki, and Mark Ibrahim lay out an architecture called Self-Direction.

Instead of writing a reflection note into a scratchpad file or relying on a fragile system prompt append, the agent distills its execution mistakes directly into tiny low-rank adapter weights.

The failure of the reflection scratchpad

Modern agent setups usually address cross-session memory with one of two patterns:

    1. Appending error reflections to an agent scratchpad or MEMORY.md file.
    2. Embedding failure traces into a vector database for retrieval-augmented prompt injection on future turns.

Both patterns struggle in production. Text notes appended to context eat away at attention budgets. As the reflection scratchpad grows, agents suffer from prompt dilution and instruction drift. More critically, an agent reading a natural-language description of an old error frequently misapplies the lesson to unrelated tool calls.

The Princeton and Meta team tracked this failure mode across open-ended research workflows (GAIA), multi-step tool execution (Claw-Eval), and command-line environments (Terminal-Bench 2.1). When agents relied on standard in-context retries, their correction reliability plummeted when facing recurring variations of the same underlying task. The agent repeatedly fell into the same traps because the underlying policy distribution never moved.

    Standard Agent Flow:
    Error -> In-context reflection -> One-off fix -> Session ends -> Lesson lost

    Self-Direction Flow:
Error -> Trajectory reflection -> Low-rank adapter update -> Persistent library -> Routed on demand

Distilling mistakes into 0.02% parameter budgets

The core mechanism of Self-Direction sits between ephemeral prompt engineering and heavy offline training.

When an agent fails an execution trajectory, it runs an internal critique to isolate the decision step that caused the downstream failure. Once the corrective trajectory is verified, the system does not just print the correction. It freezes the base model weights entirely and trains a micro-LoRA adapter on the self-directed repair pair.

The parameters updated during this step represent roughly 0.02% of the base model's parameter count.

    Because base weights remain frozen:

    1. Existing base model capabilities and general conversational skills stay intact without degradation.
    2. Training completes locally in seconds on consumer hardware without cluster coordination.
    3. The resulting adapter file is lightweight enough to store, version, and swap on the fly.

The agent saves these targeted adapter checkpoints into a persistent local library. When a new prompt arrives, an automated routing layer inspects the problem context and attaches the relevant adapter before the execution loop begins.

    Benchmark gains across open-ended tasks

The researchers tested Self-Direction on open-weight models from the Qwen family across three distinct agent benchmarks:

    • GAIA: Multi-modal, complex multi-hop research requiring web navigation and reasoning.
    • Claw-Eval: Structured tool-use workflows testing API interactions and parameter extraction.
    • Terminal-Bench 2.1: Unconstrained Linux command-line tasks, bash scripts, and system administration.

Across these environments, adding Self-Direction improved overall task completion rates by 8.9 to 17.0 percentage points compared to standard in-context reflection baselines.

More importantly, the recurrence rate of known errors dropped sharply. The authors found that Self-Direction nearly doubled the reliability of corrective actions on subsequent encounters. Instead of guessing whether the agent would notice a text hint in its system prompt, the updated adapter shifted the token sampling probabilities directly away from the faulty API syntax.

The team also evaluated out-of-distribution transfer. A small set of adapters trained on specific terminal failures generalized across dozens of unseen tasks involving related file-system permissions and process management. The agent learned the structural pattern of the fix rather than memorizing the exact shell string.

What this means for local agent runners

For developers building and hosting agent infrastructure, this work highlights an architectural transition.

Over the past two years, the industry leaned heavily on prompt stuffing to simulate agent learning. We treated context windows as infinite scratchpads, piling up few-shot examples, dynamic rules, and post-mortem notes until the prompt became brittle.

Self-Direction shows that treating execution errors as online distillation targets produces cleaner long-term behavior. When an agent trips on an environment quirk, the solution is not to explain the error back to the model in prose every time it wakes up. The solution is to let the agent compile the lesson into weights, index the adapter, and move forward.#ai #agents #python #opensource #software #coding #development #engineering #inclusive #community

  15. One of the design decisions I made early on in my Forth machine is: compiling a new system must target a second computer, controlled through some kind of tether. A software emulator counts, and that's what I've been using on the Picocalc.

But recompiling the system from scratch takes about 1m25s on the emulator, which is too long. So, I granted it a secondary core, which cut the time to 22s. Longer than I'd like, but, acceptable. (Recall that the CPU is currently only 20 MHz.)

I'm not sure how useful a second core is for other applications yet. But it's nice that the CPU is small enough that I can just toss another one in.

  27. Chapter 4.3: Artifact
    الفصل الرابع: قطعة أثرية
These pendants were created many hundreds of years ago, commissioned by two women who were friends and lived together in the Middle East.
Their inspiration was Hypatia of Alexandria, the famous female philosopher.
Following her example, the two friends devoted their lives to the pursuit of wisdom.
Their home became a gathering place and a refuge for women seeking spiritual purity, who were dissatisfied with ordinary worldly life.
From generation to generation, the pendants were passed on to the most deserving women of this community.
All of them had died long ago, and the jewelry was discovered in an abandoned building and handed over to a London antique dealer.
This gold is pure. By touching it, you will not be defiled, but will gain strength and enlightenment.

How(20)to(20)describe(20)images(20)in(20)the(20)Fediverse/Home
