It turns out bookshops are happy to have you pop in and sign books! So I got a train to Wynyard Station and began to walk to Newtown, popping into bookshops en route.
First it was Dymocks Sydney - Dymocks was one of my favourite bookstores back when I was a kid.
Second Kinokuniya - where I used to spend a silly amount of my earnings back when I was working in the Sydney CBD.

It was sickening though also enlightening to hear NSW Premier #ChrisMinns on the radio (ABC) this morning. It helpfully clarified that fundamentally, the public reason for all the chaos in Sydney's CBD last night, the reason Minns insisted NSW police prevent any march from occurring, is at its core quite deeply bigoted and racist.
What Minns admitted to in that interview this morning is that he did not trust rally organisers to do what they said they would do. He did not trust that a rally route ending at parliament house wouldn't actually be a Trojan horse for protesters to suddenly break off through police lines and go rampaging on a pogrom through the streets, looking for Jewish people to harm. That is why there couldn't be a march.
Something like 100 rallies organised by the same people, at which we have followed the agreed route every time. A hundred rallies without any arrests for violence or flouting lawful police directions (indeed, the only charges of violence in the context of 28 months of anti-genocide protest are from a police officer recklessly causing grievous bodily harm to a political candidate who ran against Prime Minister Albanese and came second to him in his electorate).

Today's enormous march was also a powerful repudiation of Premier Chris Minns' attempts to criminalise and demonise public protest in NSW over the last 21 months—efforts that have seen Premier Minns awarded a special medal by Israeli President Isaac Herzog, an individual many believe to be guilty of the crime of incitement to genocide due to numerous public statements he has made in support of the Netanyahu government's genocidal campaign in Gaza. Minns has faced no public consequence from his federal counterparts for accepting this award, despite the notorious origin of the award, and despite the apparent over-reach of a state government official receiving an award for a foreign power for his efforts in suppressing public criticism of that power (as a state representative, he is not meant to meddle in federal foreign policy).
Minns attempts to stifle this march were rejected by the NSW Supreme Court yesterday in a powerful ruling affirming the fact that protest will always involve inconvenience and disruption, and consequently, NSW Police were directed to facilitate rather than suppress today's march.

Today likely saw the largest single protest rally in Australian history.
Under dark rain clouds, hundreds of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge in a huge demonstration opposing the ongoing genocide in Gaza, as well as the complicity of the Australian government in failing to oppose Israel's crimes against humanity.
The 'March for Humanity: Save Gaza' saw organisers' expectations smashed and the government's worst fears exceeded as a great ocean of people showed up, despite pouring rain, strong winds, and a week of front page negative stories carrying anti-protest messages from the Minns state government and NSW police. It was huge.
An ocean of people, diverse in age, background, gender, religion, and rain-mitigation techniques, yet united via common humanity with those suffering starvation, snipers and shells, displacement, destruction and deprivation in Gaza:
"In our thousands,
in our millions,
we are all
Palestinians!"The protest had four demands:
- Let all aid into Gaza
- Immediate Israeli ceasefire and withdrawal from Gaza
- Sanction Israel now

The University of Sydney is attempting to deport a trans woman because she wrote pro-Palestine sentences on whiteboards.
Because she is an international student, being removed from the university would mean she would be deported, which would put her at risk.
Luna has requested an extension for this reason, so she can apply for a bridging visa, but USYD have denied her request despite knowing the risk they're putting her in. This is disgusting.

These #ceasefire rallies in support of Palestinians in #Gaza (and the #WestBank) have been, hands down, the most successfully sustained #MassProtests I've ever witnessed on this continent. Individual events have occasionally been bigger—the massive #StopTheWar effort in 2003, a handful of climate rallies, the annual #InvasionDay march—and there are protests that have been sustained much longer (nothing comes close to the multi-decade #AboriginalTentEmbassy), but I've never seen weekly rallies of this size sustained for anything like this long (>5 months and counting).
As I understand it, it is not just here on #Gadigal land in Sydney either, but similar events have been held weekly (or close to it) in most capital cities, with myriad further protests beyond that.

Every single week for the last 21 weeks upon #Gadigal land, there have been thousands upon thousands (sometimes easily tens of thousands) of people gathering in support of a #ceasefire in #Gaza and calling upon the Australian #Albanese government to stop supporting #Israel in its #genocide.
Every Sunday in Hyde Park at 1.30pm,* we've listened to #Aboriginal speakers, #Palestinian speakers, #Jewish speakers, politicians of various stripes (though neither of the major parties, of course, as they both remain complicit in support of the government responsible for most of the slaughter), elders who lived through the #Naqba, teenagers organising #StudentStrike4Palestine, community leaders, poets, faith leaders and more, with perhaps 75% of the speakers being women, and almost all being people of colour (most of the exceptions being MPs).
*Except when #NSWpolice has dictated otherwise, giving priority to (much smaller and only) occasional pro-Israel rallies and forcing a shift to Saturday a couple of times, under threat of #PoliceViolence.
Then we've marched (or rolled) with flags, banners, signs, drums and (loud!) voices: Arab, Aboriginal, African, Anglo, Asian and more; from those too old to walk (in wheelchairs) to those too young to walk (in strollers).

Later on near Prime Minister Albanese’s office in #Marrickville locals held signs saying “#Gadigal and #Gaza will be free” and “Stuff the #ALP – #landback globally”.

Many thousands gathered today in Hyde Park on #Gadigal land. Members of both the NSW & federal governments had said this event ought to be prevented from occurring, including #ALP Premier #ChrisMinns.
Speakers included Aboriginal, Palestinian & Jewish leaders. They spoke of the horrific violence against the population of #Gaza, and linked this to #colonial violence in these lands (amongst other points). #Antisemitism was vigorously and repeatedly condemned as antithetical to the #AntiRacist convictions of the rally's organisers, the very convictions that lead many people into #solidarity with oppressed #Palestinians.
Mass protest rallies always bring the risk of violence from outside agitators & troublemakers. Sure enough, present on the fringes of the crowd this afternoon were numerous groups of intimidating armed figures in dark clothing, members of a notoriously #racist organisation, responsible for many violent deaths & injuries, and for causing countless incidents at a variety of political gatherings. It's an old organisation that has not (as far as I'm aware) ever publicly renounced its historical participation in genocidal violence. Fortunately, I believe today's gathering proceeded without the #NSWpolice stirring up any further trouble.
