  1. It's alarming that Brazil, which a few years ago had rejected Jair Bolsonaro, now appears poised to elect his right-wing fascist son. I have friends there, and I can only imagine what they are feeling. Unfortunately, climate chaos sometimes exacerbates the perceived need for authoritarian solutions. Which never work, but if we all knew history we wouldn't be in this fix, would we?

    See you tomorrow.

  2. At 8:26 I make a video (full asthai & antara along with a string of variations), then sing through the hour before packing up and heading home. I have a few students today, along with a meeting and a rehearsal. In between I hope to squeeze in twenty voter postcards, a LTE, a loaf of bread to bake, and a podcast to complete and send to the tech team. And a walk with the dog!

  3. ...from the low Pa, and (flagging it as a point of study) try a variety of approaches to keep articulation clear while executing the melismatic movement. And a few minutes later I'm working on resonance in the upper register, hitting high Cs and Bbs while striving to stay relaxed without losing volume and projection. If the drivers could hear me, how would they respond?

  4. ...but no less enjoyable for all that. I mean, *everyone* sings in teentaal at this tempo, because it's slow enough that fast subdivisions sound great, fast enough that slow undulations are effective, and symmetrical enough that elaborate mathematics aren't needed to bring lines to their resolution. What's not to like? I feel a little stiffness in a string of ascending triplet paltas...

  5. I restored the antara of the composition to memory as well, and intermittently I sing this section with variations. This slow madhya teentaal is very enjoyable to work within, allowing me plenty of time to create variations without feeling rushed when it's time to resolve. As I mentioned yesterday, some of the approaches available in this framework are outside my usual stylistic bailiwick...

  6. Practice today continues in the relaxed teentaal exploration of the madhyalaya khyal in Bairagi, "Khwaja tum ho garib niwaaz." With the tabla set at 98, I continue going over the song in alternation with sequences of improvisation. My voice has done 180 degrees since yesterday morning; it's flexible, clear, and pretty wide open all the way up to a high C almost from the beginning.

  7. Traffic is heavy and I get a variety of responses, from the woman who calls out, "It's real! It's real!" to the get-a-job guy, who yells "TRUMP! TRUMP!" But my favorite is the man in a snazzy white sports car who rolls down his window and tells me that it's not climate change, it's "Israel controlling the weather." Jewish space lasers? I'm confused.

It's cold out here, in the low 50s F. Fortunately I have gloves, but to tell the truth, I wouldn't mind another layer of clothing. Nevertheless, I'm not too uncomfortable as I reach Roosevelt Circle at 7:31 and set up my stuff. No Craige today; I'm a soloist, leaning on the railing as I hold up my naively optimistic LET'S BUILD A BETTER FUTURE TOGETHER.

I wake with the alarm and lurch downstairs, groggy, slightly disoriented. Coffee and toast don't really seem to help, but on the other hand I don't have a control group so I'll never know. I reach Roosevelt Circle at 7:31, set up my stuff, and hold up my regular Monday ALL-BLACK sign. Craige arrives late, about 7:55, and we chat briefly.
