This is just several plies of fiberglass wrapped around a piece of foam that was sanded to a taper and the desired dimensions. Fiberglass can serve as a spring, but I would not use it this way where cycling fatigue is possible.

Tried a Vallejo Shifters Orange Violet for the cockpits. It looked good up close but at a distance it didn't contrast well against the red so I blacked them out again and tried Electric Blue Intense Violet and that looked much better. A bit of gloss over top and I think I'm satisfied calling the First Taurian Lancers done.
