frankly I am not at all surprised. When github.com got bought, I felt this wasn't a place to stay and looked around where to go in the longer run. gitlab.com wasn't a safe bet already back then - the smell of #enterprise/ #corporate & #VC #money was strong.

One founder just called out something the VC community has been quietly living with for a while. AI startups are reporting CARR, which counts revenue that hasn't been invoiced and may never be, to the press while labeling it ARR. The gap between those two numbers, per the CEO who went public about it, can run 3 to 5x.
Here's the part that should make you uncomfortable if you're buying AI tools or evaluating vendors: the VCs aren't getting fooled. They read the contracts. The people getting fooled are journalists writing the coverage you're using to make procurement decisions, and employees who think they're joining a rocketship.
A few things worth sitting with:
- Free pilots counted as revenue is not a new trick. It just has a better outfit now.
- If you're a CIO evaluating an AI vendor's "momentum," ask one question: is that ARR live and invoiced, or contracted?
- The companies chasing inflated benchmarks they can't actually hit are the ones that will blow up your implementation 18 months in.We've been here before. The numbers looked great right up until they didn't.

What I find particularly egregious is that Bluesky already had a custom feed builder: #Graze was an independent project that had proved to be super popular. They had raised a million dollars just last year! They even sponsored the AtmosphereConf last week. Then Bluesky PBC steamrolled over them and announced their own project - Attie - powered by AI... at AtmosphereConf (the event where Graze was listed as a major sponsor - you can't make this up).
A developer for ATProto was horrified by this, writing:
"Why would anyone fund an Atmosphere project if Bluesky, with $100 million in the bank, might ship a competing feature at any moment? Why would a founder bet their career on this ecosystem? The presentation didn't just hurt Graze. It made the entire ecosystem look unfundable."

I am getting A LOT of heat for pointing out shady behaviors by Bluesky PBC. Even from Fedi friends. But I think it's important to be wide-eyed and consider all this mounting evidence of problematic behavior.

I would like to replace the front door - hopefully it's a revolving door, so the aesthetics don't change so much - of the YCombinator offices with an enormous 10-stacked-blades MixMaster.
It seems that the complete corruption of my industry might have been prevented if I'd done this years ago, and anyone trying to go in or out of that place is not going to be a loss to society anyways.
