Cal Fire has recognized the Ventura County Fire Protection District as a fire risk reduction community, effective now through July 2028. This is important because (a) VCFPD is the agency responsible for fire prevention and response in Thousand Oaks and (b) recognition brings priority consideration for Cal Fire’s Wildfire Prevention Grants and helps inform wildfire risk ratings.

When power and communications go out, amateur radio keeps working. As a test of emergency response, amateur radio clubs around the country – locally including the Conejo Valley Amateur Radio Club (CVARC) and the Ventura County Amateur Radio Society (VCARS) – hold annual field day exercises. These events are outdoors, completely self-supported, and open to the public. The goal: To make as many contacts (QSOs) with the outside world as possible.

The CVARC event took place in Hidden Valley, and was the largest of its kind in the nation, with 25 radio stations and more than 600 feet of antennas. The VCARS setup at the Reagan Library was nearly as large, with 17 radio stations. Thanks to all who took part – we’ll be depending on you when the next emergency strikes!
