Tuesday, September 17th, was World Patient Safety Day. (I didn’t know that either.) In the UK, more than 200 physicians, nurses and other health care providers and professionals marked the occasion by issuing an appeal—in the form of a letter to Wes Streeting, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care since–about the dire state of care for ME patients within the National Health Service. The letter highlighted in particular the plight of patients with severe ME.

The inquest this summer into the death of Maeve Boothby O’Neill, who died in Exeter three years ago at the age of 27, drew widespread attention to the abysmal situation for such patients at NHS hospitals. The presiding coroner, Deborah Archer, ruled that no individuals were responsible for causing or contributing to Maeve’s death, although she acknowledged that some of the decisions made were concerning. On Friday, September 27th, she will hold a hearing to consider whether to issue a report with recommendations to prevent future deaths.

As a Times article about this week’s letter to Secretary Streeting noted:

“A lack of NHS specialist services was highlighted at the inquest of Maeve Boothby O’Neill, who died in 2021 aged 27. An inquest last month concluded that she died from malnutrition caused by severe ME, with the government acknowledging that Boothby O’Neill ‘fell through the cracks’ and was “repeatedly misunderstood and dismissed” by the NHS.”

Dr Binita Kane, a respiratory physician in Manchester, co-organized the letter with #ThereForME, a campaign launched by carers for patients with severe ME associated with Long Covid. Dr Kane posted a thread about the letter on X (the former Twitter). The first listed demand is “acknowledgement from the very top of government…that gaps in NHS services for ME are resulting in serious patient safety concerns” and a commitment “to taking action.”

I have posted the full letter below, along with all the signatories. (I haven’t counted them, but the article in The Times says there are 202.)

    **********

    Dear Secretary of State,

We write to you on World Patient Safety Day to express our concerns about the safety of patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) within the NHS.

In August over 2,600 patients and carers affected by ME and Long Covid wrote to you, sharing recommendations from the #ThereForME campaign. The Department of Health and Social Care has thus far declined to meet with the campaign. On World Patient Safety Day, we – as healthcare workers – call on you to listen to their voices and take immediate action.

The theme for this year’s World Patient Safety Day is ‘Improving diagnosis for patient safety’, using the slogan ‘Get it right, make it safe’. Devastatingly, for patients with ME this simply is not true. There is little access to truly specialist ME care or treatment within the NHS and paradoxically, the sicker a patient is, the less care they receive.

The number of people affected by ME has grown vastly since the start of the pandemic. Although the data is difficult to disentangle, by some estimates as many as half of patients with Long Covid could meet the diagnostic criteria for ME and face the same gaps in NHS care. Even if doctors and healthcare professionals are knowledgeable and willing to treat patients, the infrastructure to provide safe and appropriate care does not exist.

Like all patients, people with ME deserve safe care within the NHS.

Patients at the severe end of the disease spectrum are bedridden, sometimes tube-fed and confined to quiet, darkened rooms due to extreme light and sound sensitivity. Hospital appointments or admissions often become impossible or make the condition worse. In the most extreme cases, patients languish behind closed doors with little or no support. Some – including high-profile cases in the media – have even starved to death.

This is a state of affairs barely conceivable in the UK in 2024.

The new cross-government delivery plan is a welcome opportunity to put patient safety at the heart of NHS care – but it will be months before the plan is published and perhaps years before it is implemented. Urgent action is needed today.

On World Patient Safety Day we call on you to:

    • Acknowledge, from the very top of government, that gaps in NHS services for ME are resulting in serious patient safety concerns, and commit to taking action.
    • Work with us to immediately convene an ME Clinical Taskforce to provide emergency specialist guidance in cases where patients are hospitalised, and drive forwards improvements in NHS treatment and care (including managing risks of malnutrition).
    • Commit that this government will hold NHS Trusts and Integrated Care Boards accountable for implementing guidance from NICE on diagnosing and managing ME (NG206), recognising that a failure to do so risks unsafe care.

Doing nothing is not safe. We urge you to take action now.

"Police violence is systemically rooted in #WhiteSupremacy, #heteropatriarchy, #capitalism, and #colonialism.

"According to Eastern Kentucky University professor Victor E. Kappeler, 'New England settlers appointed Indian Constables to police Native Americans (National Constable Association, 1995), the St. Louis police were founded to protect residents from Native Americans in that frontier city, and many southern police departments began as slave patrols. In 1704, the colony of Carolina developed the nation’s first slave patrol. Slave patrols helped to maintain the economic order and to assist the wealthy landowners in recovering and punishing slaves who essentially were considered property.'

"According to the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice 'The racial group most likely to be killed by law enforcement is Native Americans, followed by African Americans, Latinos, Whites, and Asian Americans.' This is not to argue Indigenous folks’ oppression is more severe, but to recognize our shared struggles to ensure there is not one more Sarah Lee Circle Bear‬, Corey Kanosh‬, Paul Castaway‬, Allen Locke‬, Mahivist Goodblanket‬, John Williams‬, or Loreal Tsingine (and so many more...) and to situate the ongoing police terrorism all our communities face as originating from the same systems of oppression.
Beyond pleas for a system rooted in genocide and slavery to recognize that our lives matter, our communities and movements can learn from each others’ struggles and build together towards lasting solutions to defend ourselves, neighbors, lands, and to resolve issues we face in more just and healthy ways. 4. The ancestors of the #Menominee Indian Tribe of #Wisconsin built earthen mounds to grow crops. The site could be the largest preserved archaeological field system in the eastern United States

by Sarah Kuta - Daily Correspondent
    June 10, 2025

"Hundreds of years before the arrival of the first Europeans, #Indigenous farmers were growing crops like squash, corn and beans in earthen mounds they built on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

"The mounds—created by the ancestors of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin—likely represent the largest preserved archaeological field system in the eastern United States, according to a study published this month in the journal Science.

"Archaeologists discovered the mounds in May 2023 during the brief window between winter and spring. The winter snow had melted, but the leaves had not yet appeared on the trees. They surveyed 330 acres using a drone equipped with a laser that mapped subtle features on the surface—a remote sensing technique known as lidar.

"The team mapped an area that has cultural and historical importance to the Menominee. Located along the #MenomineeRiver on the #MichiganWisconsin border, this region is known as #AnaemOmot, or the 'Dog’s Belly.'

"The lidar uncovered a quilt-like pattern of parallel ridges that range from four to 12 inches tall. The mounds extend beyond the study area, suggesting the ancestral Menominee agricultural system was ten times larger than previously thought.

"The fact that the mounds still exist is unusual.

" 'Most field systems have been either lost or destroyed due to intensive land use across most of North America, through farming, including pastures and the cutting down of trees for urban development,' says co-author Jesse Casana, an anthropologist at Dartmouth College, in a statement.

"The research gives scientists a 'little window' into what #PreColonial life was like for the ancestral #MenomineePeople, Casana adds.

"During their excavations, the scientists also found several artifacts, including charcoal and fragments of broken ceramics. These discoveries suggest that the area’s Indigenous farmers may have dumped their household waste and the remnants of fires onto their fields, using them as #compost. Samples taken from the mounds suggest the farmers enriched the dirt with soil from nearby wetlands.

"The results indicate that ancestral Menominee people dedicated a lot of time and energy to agriculture in a remote area. The team has not found any significant settlement sites in the region—only a few small villages.

" 'It requires a lot of labor to create these fields, to clear the forest,' says Susan Kooiman, an anthropologist at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville who was not involved with the research, to NPR’s Nell Greenfieldboyce. 'This is dense forest, now and then. To clear it, only with stone tools, is a lot of labor, a lot of work. … The amount of work, and just how far these fields extend, is beyond anything that I think people suspected was going on this far north in eastern North America.' Many thanks to the organizers of #SCaLE22x for creating a lovely conference experience as always. It is one of my favorite #OpenSource events, although I'm biased at least a little given it was my first introduction to the #tech community 14 years ago.

If you haven't been, it's a great community & open source focused event with a very diverse group of attendees, wide range of talks and a packed expo hall.

To all the folks I was able to visit, meet, or connect with during the event: I loved it! Thank you for making the time! And I hope to see you again - & continue building connections - very soon as I look at increasing event participation over the next year.

Special thanks to @dbeaver_news for my very cool (and unfortunately not permanent) tattoo. I wore it with pride. ❤️

  7. The whispers began as I walked into the room. The sideways glances and whispers made me feel terribly uncomfortable. It was one mistake, one stupid mistake that was now threatening what I'd worked for. I wasn't welcome here, but I had to stand my ground.
I take my seat at the table as the presentation begins.

Jane was there. What was she even doing here? I watched her as she averted my gaze. Her eyes briefly met mine and she paused. I loved her once. Well, at least I thought I did. She still had an aura about her, her dark sultry eyes and hair that draped down past her shoulders were very appealing. As the presentation continues, my mind starts to race.

I should've ignored the message. I shouldn't have even started a conversation. But I longed for an emotional connection that at the time I was not getting. While time with Jane was electric, at times she was cold and distant. She just shut me out, unable to break through her past. I told her I wasn't like the others. That I'd be there for her, but I betrayed her.

Sarah gave me something. Something that I thought I needed. I opened my heart to her when I should've been happy with Jane. I was now a pariah. Colleagues at work following the drama through Jane's social media, stoking the flames of dissent. I can't change what I've done. I know it will be forever a blight on my character.

I'm sure time will heal the wounds. But I must take responsibility for the path I've chosen.

TITLE: Threatening men’s masculinity does not make them more politically conservative, new study finds

    URL: psypost.org/threatening-mens-m

A recent study published in the Journal of Experimental Political Science suggests that threatening a man’s sense of masculinity might not cause him to adopt more conservative or stereotypically masculine political beliefs. By testing thousands of participants across the United States, researchers found no consistent evidence that making men feel insecure about their gender identity changes their political attitudes.

In both popular culture and politics, many commentators assert that society is experiencing a crisis of masculinity. Some politicians have even made this idea a central part of their campaign platforms, suggesting that traditional men are under attack. Sociologists and psychologists sometimes attribute the growth in far-right extremism and resistance to women’s equality to a concept known as masculinity threat. Masculinity threat is the theory that manhood is a precarious, unstable status that men must constantly earn and defend.

According to this theory, womanhood is often viewed as a natural biological development, while masculine identity is understood to be more fragile. When men feel their gender identity is challenged, they tend to overcompensate by engaging in extreme demonstrations of stereotypical masculinity. This overcompensation can manifest as physical aggression or increased risk-taking. Some scientists suggest it can also influence a person’s social and political viewpoints.

To test this idea, a highly cited 2013 study measured how men reacted when their masculinity was questioned in a laboratory setting. That original study found that men who experienced a gender identity threat tended to express more support for war, homophobia, and dominance over other groups. The authors of that older study reasoned that endorsing conservative views allows men to reaffirm their gender identity.

Because the 2013 paper became highly influential, the scientists behind the new study wanted to see if they could reproduce those original findings. Replicating older studies is an ordinary part of the scientific process, providing evidence regarding whether previous discoveries hold up under different conditions.

“This article is a replication of a highly cited study published in the American Journal of Sociology,” explained study author Claire Gothreau, a postdoctoral researcher at the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences at Dartmouth College. “I’ve always found the idea of ‘masculinity threat’ both fascinating and compelling, but I wondered whether the relationship identified in the original study would hold up in a more representative sample.”

Gothreau, who will join the faculty at Lebanon Valley College as an assistant professor in August 2026, noted the cultural timing of the work. “Given the current cultural conversation around masculinity and the so-called ‘masculinity crisis,’ it felt like an especially important moment to revisit and rigorously test these claims,” she said.

The researchers conducted their new experiment using a nationally representative sample of 2,774 American adults, which included 2,073 men. They specifically oversampled men because the theory of masculinity threat focuses primarily on male reactions and male insecurities. Participants were randomly divided into different groups and asked to complete an online survey. The survey was designed to measure how strongly participants identified with a variety of masculine and feminine personality traits.

After taking the personality survey, participants in the main experimental group received randomly generated, deceptive feedback. Men in this group were falsely told that their scores fell into the feminine range, while women were told their scores were in the masculine range. This false feedback was designed to induce a sense of gender threat. Another group of participants received accurate feedback that simply placed them in the average range for their gender, acting as a control group for baseline comparison.

To improve upon the 2013 research, the scientists added two new experimental conditions to their study. In one group, participants received feedback that was only slightly altered from their real scores. The researchers included this condition to make the threat feel more realistic to people who might doubt a completely fake, extreme result. This helped ensure that participants actually believed the feedback they were reading.

In another group, participants took a popular culture trivia quiz and were told they performed poorly. This general knowledge threat was designed to test an alternative psychological explanation. The researchers wanted to see if people just become more conservative when they feel bad about themselves in general, rather than feeling specifically insecure about their gender.

After receiving their feedback, all participants answered a series of questions about their political and social views. The researchers measured their support for the Iraq War, their views on gay rights, and their desire to purchase a sports utility vehicle. They also measured participants’ preference for traditionalism, which is a desire to stick with known, safe routines rather than trying new things.

The survey also tested participants on their support for system justification and social dominance. System justification is the psychological tendency to defend and rationalize the current social and political system as fair and legitimate. Social dominance is the belief that some groups of people are naturally superior to others and should maintain control over inferior groups.

The scientists also included new questions to reflect modern political debates that were not as prominent in 2013. These updated questions asked participants about their views on transgender rights, legal immigration, and the legalization of marijuana. They also measured whether participants wanted to buy an electric car and if they supported preferential hiring policies to help women overcome past discrimination.

The researchers found no consistent evidence that experiencing a masculinity threat changed men’s political attitudes. “We really went into this being completely ambivalent about what the results would be, so I would say no, nothing surprised me about our results!” Gothreau said.

Men who were told they scored in the feminine range did not show increased support for the Iraq War or homophobia compared to men in the control group. They also did not show a greater desire to buy a sports utility vehicle or endorse more traditionalist beliefs. The alternative experimental conditions also failed to produce the expected changes in political beliefs.

While the study provides evidence that masculinity threat does not easily shift political beliefs, the scientists note a few potential limitations. “The first one is simply that the failed replication could be due to any number of design differences between the original study,” Gothreau explained. “These include things like timing, measurement, sample composition, and other subtle design details.”

She noted that while the team accounted for alternative explanations for the lack of an effect, they could not account for everything. Moving the experiment to an online format with a diverse, national sample might have changed how strongly participants felt the threat. It is possible that being told about a feminine test score face to face has a stronger emotional impact than reading the same feedback on a computer screen.

Gothreau also warned against broad conclusions based solely on this new data. “One potential misinterpretation would be concluding that ‘masculinity threat has no relevance to politics,'” she said. “That would go too far.”

“Other researchers, including Sarah DiMuccio and Eric Knowles, as well as Brian Harrison and Melissa Michelson, have found evidence linking masculinity threat to greater support for policies such as the death penalty, military aggression, and hostility toward transgender people,” Gothreau explained. “At this point, the broader evidence is mixed, which makes this an active and important area for continued research.”

Reflecting on the overall project, Gothreau highlighted two major takeaways for the public. “First, scientific findings do not always replicate, and that’s actually a normal and valuable part of science,” she said. “A failed replication doesn’t necessarily mean the original findings were ‘wrong.'”

Instead, replication studies help refine scientific theories by showing that certain effects might only emerge under specific conditions.

“Second, our findings suggest that we still have a great deal to learn about how masculinity shapes political beliefs and behavior,” Gothreau added. “The relationship appears to be more nuanced and context-dependent than is often assumed.”

Looking ahead, the researchers plan to continue investigating gender and politics from new angles. “I’m currently shifting from studying masculinity threat specifically to exploring how self-perceived masculinity relates to political attitudes, ideological orientations, and political participation more broadly,” Gothreau said.

She plans to focus on a concept she calls the masculinity gap. “I’m especially interested in what I call the ‘masculinity gap,’ the discrepancy between how masculine people see themselves and how masculine they ideally want to be, and whether that gap can help us better understand phenomena like political extremism, grievance politics, and anti-egalitarian attitudes,” she explained.

The researchers noted that conducting this kind of extensive testing requires substantial support. “This research would not have been possible without the grant we received from the Time-sharing Experiments in the Social Sciences grant, which is funded by the National Science Foundation,” Gothreau said. “Access to funding opportunities like these is absolutely critical for early-career researchers like myself, especially for conducting large-scale, high-quality public opinion research.”

The study, “A Replication and Extension of Willer et al. (2013), Overdoing Gender: A Test of the Masculine Overcompensation Thesis,” was authored by Claire Gothreau and Nicholas Haas.

  15. Offener Brief: AfD auf Verfassungswidrigkeit prüfen

    Belltower.News

    (Quelle: picture alliance/dpa | Hannes P Albert)

  16. #UK: Warning as #BirdFlu found in dead gull

by Sarah Turnnidge, April 2, 2025

"A warning has been issued after a confirmed case of bird flu was found in a wild herring gull.

"#Devizes Town Council has urged dog owners to take care after the bird was found dead in the town with H5N1 Avian Influenza as part of ongoing surveillance work.

"In a post on social media a spokesperson for the local authority confirmed #Wiltshire Council had been notified of the finding by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (3APHA).

"The public have been told to avoid touching dead or sick wild birds, their #feathers, or surfaces contaminated by #BirdDroppings.

"#DogOwners should keep their pets on leads and use footpaths, the APHA said, with people who keep poultry or other birds advised to wash their hands and #disinfect footwear after handling.

"The Health Security Agency has said the risk to public health is very low. [But remember -- it is deadly for cats, and can be passed from humans to cats].

"A spokesperson for Devizes Town Council said: 'We will continue to monitor the situation and keep the public informed of any developments.'

I wonder if Sarah McBride could be plotting something. The wording of her message leaves open possible #maliciouscompliance: "I will follow the rules as outlined by Speaker Johnson". No set of rules can completely cover all situations and grey areas can be exploited. What #passiveagressive tactics could be used by her and her (#LGBT) allies against the opponents?

"Two of northern Gaza’s last functioning hospitals have been encircled by Israeli troops, preventing anyone from leaving or entering the facilities, hospital staff and aid groups said this week, as Israel pursued its renewed offensive into the devastated #Palestinian territory.

"The #IndonesianHospital and #AlAwdaHospital are among the region’s only surviving medical centers. Both have come under fire this week, including shelling at al-Awda that happened Wednesday as The Associated Press spoke to its director on the phone.

  20. “I don’t have time” is the most honest thing anyone says about learning Hebrew.

But the people who succeed aren’t the ones with free time — they’re the ones who use the time they already have.

5 minutes while coffee brews. 10 on your lunch break. 15 before bed.

With the right method, that’s enough.

Like Sarah said: “I’ve been doing 10 minutes a day of Practically Speaking Hebrew, and I just understood a full conversation at the store.”

Your busy life isn’t the obstacle. It’s your superpower.

  21. I feel like this post deserves a content warning but I am not sure what the necessary warning is.

Youtube channel SMG4 has plagerized the design of one of the main characters of the incredible webcomic series
The Property of Hate by Sarah Jolley. SMG4 has now "licensed" "their" character for an animated TV show with a medium-sized studio.

These events have lead the actual artist to have a mental breakdown. They issued a statement, asking folks to contact Glitch Productions, the studio in question.

And here are the long-term investments of the State of Texas, and here’s who’s benefiting most, least, and not at all from those investments.' And the comptroller has not done much of that in the last several years." texasobserver.org/sarah-eckhar

  27. CF Premiere: Sarah Kay – Daughters Of The Drums [KVLTÖ Records]

One of our favorite labels is back in action —and as always, with judgment. KVLTÖ Records proudly welcomes Sarah Kay, a new voice in the catalog arriving from Canada with a proposition that from the very first track makes clear we’re not dealing with a risky bet but with genuine talent and a meticulously designed proposal for the dance floor. Labels we know well rarely get these additions wrong —and this one is no exception.

Her first release within the LTD series is titled Daughters Of The Drums —and the name already carries a declaration: something ancient, feminine, percussive, ritual. The EP achieves what very few debut releases manage: a perfect balance between renewed energy and the pure essence of techno.

There is none of the excess of someone trying to impress on first listen, nor the timidity of someone who hasn’t yet learned to trust their voice. What’s here is a dynamic, texturally rich interpretation with a deep rhythmic identity that doesn’t imitate anything already existing —it has its own way of moving, its own pulse. A new milestone in the LTD series, without question.

The title track opens with tinkling beginnings that dissolve time from the very first seconds, carrying us toward mysterious and unknown coordinates with a slowness that isn’t hesitation but confidence —the confidence of someone who knows exactly where they’re going even if they don’t tell you. Those tinkling sounds multiply and interweave until they create a progressively suggestive and mysterious texture, as if something ancient were taking shape in the present.

The sonic synthesis that emerges from all of this arrives loaded with deliriums of ancient times and eternal curses that don’t weigh but float —integrated into a texture that completes itself perfectly between artistic performance, well-grounded concepts, and deep meaning. A debut that isn’t easily forgotten.
