Honoring the #Movements and People who Inspire us. #Warriors, #Writers and #Dreamers -- A Thread Runs Through Them. #CensoredNews 20th Anniversary.
'Know who you are, and never let anyone take your power from you.'
By #BrendaNorrell, Censored News, August 30, 2026
"We're coming up on our 20th anniversary at Censored News, and we are honoring the warriors, leaders, writers and dreamers who make Censored News possible.
When the Mohawks came for the border summit in 2006 and 2007, it was, as they say in the movie Casablanca, the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Along with the Mohawks, leaders, writers and dreamers through the years became a sort of collective which makes Censored News what it is, a service to #IndigenousPeople and #HumanRights.
We lost many of our best, #Lakota Warrior Woman #DebWhitePlume, our longtime friend #KleeBenally, our French translator #ChristinePrat, and many more. But thanks to those who keep sharing their work, we keep Censored News going. This summer our page views increased by millions, thanks to their labors of love.
Today, we celebrate the movements and people who inspire us, as we celebrate our 20 Year Anniversary at Censored News."

Update: Brenda is out of the hospital and updating Censored News again. But she still needs more support!
Switching gears. As many of you know, I've been friends and colleagues with #BrendaNorrell since the 1990s. I know money is tight, but if you can, please donate to help keep #CensoredNews going... Brenda has been a #Truthteller for many years and reports on the people and stories that don't often make #MainstreamMedia or even #IndigenousNewsOutlets (like #KleeBenally's passing and #JusticeForRaymondMattia ).

So, I've been thinking a lot about #matriarchy and groups of people. From my own experience, sometimes groups with even the best of intentions can turn into pools of #ToxicMasculinity when males with egos start trying to run things and boss everyone around. I saw that happen with my own coven, when a member of #AIM started having the final say about everything -- often overriding our High Priestess (he was her consort). From what I've read about AIM on a national level (including excerpts from #KleeBenally's book, #NoSpiritualSurrender and #MaryCrowDog's #LakotaWoman), it seems to have been pretty commonplace. So much for Iroquois matriarchy, eh? (The coven-mate in question was Mohawk).

Director: Bahe (Naabaahii) Katenay (Keediniihii), October 2023 (75 minute featured documentary)Background:
"In the 1970s, Dineh (Navajo) families around Big Mountain were notified that their communities would be uprooted and that they may never see their ancestral homelands ever again. Now 50 years later, less than 20 home sites remain and the once strong #resistance leaders like #PaulineWhitesinger, #HaastinNiizBegay, #JohnKatenay, and #RobertaBlackgoat (#KleeBenally's grandmother) have all passed on.
How should the future remember the legacies of such wise teachers? What gave their community the will to defy U.S.
Congressional Legislations that were nothing but anti-Indian which was forcing them to give up hundreds of years of cultural existence?
The Congress of the United States passed Public Law 93-531 in 1974 and it was signed by the President. It is an Executive Order, a declaration to exterminate, a declaration of war. The justification for this law was to “resolve” a supposed “land-dispute” among the Hopis and Dineh, and the lands were divided.
The 2023 Video Documentary:
The original impetus for resisting the federal mandate was the sacredness of the lands, ancestral ties and natural features which were dwelling places of Deities. The elder interviewees knew the future will not be the same way as they had lived and the same childhood experience. The video put aside much of the effective resistance against the most powerful, #capitalistic country in the world, instead the video presents stories about their ancestors’ teachings. A Dineh ritual existence which was basically daily living, ceremonies and nutrition. An indigenous atmosphere long before the Europeans’ arrival with its brutal conquest. The video narrowly touches on a 400-year history of cultural survival and maintaining identity. And how that history overlaps with so-called modern America. One grandmother’s story become an intense chapter, and it is about her direct clan ancestry facing near annihilation as one little girl survives which resulted in re-establishing a Clan at Big Mountain.
"This story comes from a massacre site with two mass graves. Then stories about decades of intense state of fear and which lead into the US’s late 1800s war policy of random killing, starvation and captivity. The modern times the 1920s and 30s when these story tellers were born, a different state of fear had re-emerged, and then again at their elderhood in the late 1900s. All the stories in this documentary program are messages for the future because, as these elders have predicted, the lands maybe empty of indigenous culture which once thrived for centuries."

Over the Edge/In Reverence - #KleeBenally
Premiered Nov 22, 2019
"I'm not sure if you got my letter
I could resend it but it just said,
let’s push it over the edge, again and again…
sometimes it's best not to make plans
there’s an art to crashing in
let’s push it over the edge again
we invoke this
disavow this
pledge no allegiance
did you see the future came and went
it was everything we made it
pushed it over the edge again and again
caught up in the moment
forgot where it began
let’s push it over the edge again
we invoke this
disavow this
pledge no allegiance
actions are our prayers
when we live our lives
in reverence
(and this feels just like, coming home)
disharmonious
the discordance
in the shadow of irreverence
what else can
bring justice when
nothing will grow and
what else can
bring justice when
the bullets are lodged so deep in
we invoke this
disavow this
pledge no allegiance
actions are our prayers
when we live our lives
in reverence"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoxxSr5jfMY

#KleeBenally, Navajo Activist and Artist, Dies at 48
He helped found a punk-rock band when he was 14. That led to a long career as an advocate for Native American and environmental causes.

From Chapter 8 of #KleeBenally's book, #NoSpiritualSurrender - #IndigenousAnarchy, #InDefenseOfTheSacred:
"In the book #LakotaWoman, #MaryCrowDog and #RichardErdoes
shared this prophetic quote by #AnnaMaeAquash in 1975,'[The FBI] offered me my freedom and money if I’d testify the way they wanted. I have those two choices now. I chose my kind of freedom, not their kind, even if I have to die. They let me go because they are sure I’ll lead them to Peltier. They’re watching me. I don’t hear them or see them, but I know they’re out there somewhere. I can feel it.' "

"Police violence is systemically rooted in #WhiteSupremacy, #heteropatriarchy, #capitalism, and #colonialism.
"According to Eastern Kentucky University professor Victor E. Kappeler, 'New England settlers appointed Indian Constables to police Native Americans (National Constable Association, 1995), the St. Louis police were founded to protect residents from Native Americans in that frontier city, and many southern police departments began as slave patrols. In 1704, the colony of Carolina developed the nation’s first slave patrol. Slave patrols helped to maintain the economic order and to assist the wealthy landowners in recovering and punishing slaves who essentially were considered property.'"According to the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice 'The racial group most likely to be killed by law enforcement is Native Americans, followed by African Americans, Latinos, Whites, and Asian Americans.' This is not to argue Indigenous folks’ oppression is more severe, but to recognize our shared struggles to ensure there is not one more Sarah Lee Circle Bear, Corey Kanosh, Paul Castaway, Allen Locke, Mahivist Goodblanket, John Williams, or Loreal Tsingine (and so many more...) and to situate the ongoing police terrorism all our communities face as originating from the same systems of oppression.
Beyond pleas for a system rooted in genocide and slavery to recognize that our lives matter, our communities and movements can learn from each others’ struggles and build together towards lasting solutions to defend ourselves, neighbors, lands, and to resolve issues we face in more just and healthy ways. #Unsustainable by #KleeBenally
"All my rage bleeds out my throat
into rivers that used to flow
into canyons painting these deserts
so that they will grow. (once again)is it too late
to rethink this?
on the eve of another apocalypse…
how far are will willing to go
to resist?
how far are will willing to go?we can’t sustain, we can’t sustain
the unsustainableare you still waiting and hoping this will all go away?
or for a better cage or more comfortable chains?
while these roots wither and they decay
well, its not broken, it’s made this way…
we can’t sustain, we can’t sustain
the unsustainableand if the structures don’t change?
and the control remains the same?
they bring terror but they have names
so fuck your votes, your politicians, and reforms
we can’t sustain, we can’t sustain
the unsustainableend this cycle
destroy what destroys uswe can’t sustain."

#Blackfire - #Resist (with #KleeBenally)
"Walk upon the screaming grounds, each step takes us on a different past
We try to carry on, but you hold us back
We get used to the pain, 'cause we feel it every day
We get used to the lies, 'cause the truths so far away
Walk upon the screaming grounds, no respect for the dead
You see what you want to see, is nothing sacred?"The past is just an echo we hear in the pages of books
But how can we let go of something we could never touch
Were given the freedom of speech but you change our words
You turn to help the environment but you can't respect the earth"Walk upon the screaming grounds, no respect for the dead
You see what you want to see, is nothing sacred?"You sold your life for another life
You sold your future thought you could survive
You sold your soul for an education
What you got was forced relocationWalk upon the screaming grounds, no respect for the dead
You see what you want to see, is nothing sacred?"Decide now which side of the fence you want to be on
Which way do you want to live?
How can we choose one or the other
We must resist
We will build the bridges
We will tear down the fences
We will resist, We will resist!"Walk upon the screaming grounds, no respect for the dead
You see what you want to see, is nothing sacred?
Is nothing sacred?"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfwL9EBt7Wo
