Of the flies I saw today, this one is my favourite. It's the ngaro tara or three-lined Hover Fly (*Helophilus seelandicus*), a New Zealand endemic species.

I like the sleek colour pattern. It would not look out of place on a coverable sports car.

While the adult is sleek, the larva is a rat-tailed maggot with a long snorkle out its rear end that allows it to eat decomposing matter in stagnant water.

I saw this while on my weekly biodiversity run this afternoon through Ōtautahi-Christchurch city, NZ.

The #marmalade #hoverfly, #Episyrphus #balteatus (#Syrphidae), is a common #species in #CentralEurope. It either #hibernates here as adult or #migrates toward #SouthernEurope, crossing the Alps. Its #migratorybehavior resembles that of other migratory animals.

I don't *think* I have any rot holes in the three trees on my property (though the cherry is a possibility). NYC iNat obs only start in 2023; likely gone unobserved until then.

Aside from being a new species record for my garden, my observation stands out:
* Earliest. No other May obs. FOY 2025.

Proboscis extension reflex (PER) is fairly well known in honeybees/bumblebees now - bee learns to associate a stimulus (e.g. odour) with food, and starts extending the proboscis when it smells the odour, even without food. Today in the forest I was never aware of the rain, til I hanged all my affairs for drying. Workday even started well: a lone cricket was singing, bands of red kite were heading south in a temporarily blue sky. I had just the time to shoot hover flies in dandelions and then again ⛈️
