As we may know, not everyone has #food. I just had cheese flavoured corn chips/crisps and an apple (Not the Jobs Worth) an actual, real fruitiness.
Phew, I was swearing incessantly, which means:
- My blood sugar is low
- I am peckish
- the desktop is not doing what I expect
- too much herbal tea made #Rasayana style with #turmeric, #pepper and #ginger
.. think it is a combination of all four. 😮

It's really interesting to see what people think makes a story true to its origin. Both in the history video and in the comments of the movie, most people seem to think it's only the dwarves and lack of a Princess and Golem's name that make The Hobbit story what it is. They are unironically saying this version is *nothing* alike the original book.
So I was quite surprised at how very closely this movie captured so many moments of essence that I think are far more important to The Hobbit, in terms of plot, characterization, character arc, obstacles to overcome, even dialog. The spirit of the scenes is the same, too, boiled down tidily.
My favorite example is how Gandalf & Crew showing up to foist Bilbo away in a big rush feels *exactly* like Rankin-Bass and the original text. (I was singing "That's what Bilbo Baggins hates!" as it played.) Yet they cover this scene in less than a minute.
You'd be hard pressed to find two original folk versions of Rumplestiltskin this closely aligned at many points of the film.
Maybe being trained in plot design and motifs gives me this eye for what makes a story what it is? Yes, this movie is a knockoff. But names and labels and the existence of side characters is only incidental to the heart of a story. I really hope normal people are more insightful than that.

Have been listening to #AndySerkis' audio book reading of #TheLordOfTheRings which is apparently #free on archive.org. His performance is spirited, though a little uneven in spots, and his singing is just fair. His voicing choices sound inspired by the actors in the Peter Jackson films (AS mimics Sean Bean's #Boromir, Sir Ian McKellen's #Gandalf, etc.). It is also a little odd overall since it is a bit like #Gollum reading #JRRTolkien's translation of The Red Book of Westmarch to me. Overall though, nicely done. Just saw a pre-concert video of Judas Priest lead singer Rob Halford using a cane and hobbling his way through a tunnel on his way to the stage. He’s 73 and looks 100. And, wow, this is far from the first time I've run into misogynistic religious programming -- @Harena, for example, is a recovering Catholic and even now, nearly 5 decades later, bits of that stuff still come to light -- but it never fails to make my blood boil. It's so... beauty-destroying. :scowl: :kestraglow:
Here's some irony (is that the right word here?) for you: after I had SRS, when I finally had [a reasonable approximation of] the female parts I always wanted, was when I stopped feeling body-shame. I just wish I looked more fundamentally female, instead of maybe being seen that way on a good day. (Too many decades of the wrong hormones.)
Elsewhere in the tree of this discussion, I've talked about #JennyHypertwin (my high-school rescuer and Harena's little sister -- a recovering Catholic who didn't survive the recovery), and a little bit of history there seems relevant here:
I'd always had an aversion to male parts for as long as I can remember (one memory goes back to age 3), but it was made so much worse by the assumptions J's mom made about me because I was male-bodied. It was assumed that my primary interest in her was sex, or (at best) that I would eventually succumb to The Urge. (IRL: I was not interested in sex.) We were not allowed to be alone in a house together; we were not allowed to be in her bedroom together (even with her mom in the house). I was not allowed on sleep-overs.
We ended up meeting after school several times in an abandoned semi-wooded lot several blocks from her house so we could talk without there being "implications" -- and talk is what we did. She was always incredibly anxious about me even touching her. (I did want to touch her, but not for sex; just affection. We were actually both rather touch-starved... but that's another story.)
What I understood was that her mom was terrified she would get pregnant -- which was only even a practical possibility because of the male parts that I had and didn't want. I already felt kind of gross having those parts, but this just kind of pounded that feeling indelibly into my soul.
So, yeah, certain brands of religion are great at making people feel terrible about their sexuality, even if they're actually asexual, regardless of parts or brain-gender.

Odd about short skirts being okay but not long ones -- I'd have thought the "immodesty" of the shorter ones would be a cue for "vanity" or whatever thing it is you're supposed to think is Bad And Wrong...
What kind of infantilization do you mean? I suspect I may have some mini-rants about that too.
P.S. My late friend Tigger (to whom J introduced me) had a grey cat named Gandalf when she was growing up.
