Pack up the car

None really. I’m not much of a traveler so no book or movie has inspired me to travel. In fact, the first movie I thought of this morning inspired me not to travel and that’s The Wizard of Oz. When Dorothy wakes up in her bed and tells us if she ever goes looking for her heart’s desire again she won’t look any further than her own back yard because if it’s not there, it was never lost to begin with, it made sense to me. Stay home, stay safe. Kind of a sheltered existence, but it works. About the best a book has ever done for me is inspire me to want to travel. Travels With Charley, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. On the Road. I suppose The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the Hobbit books might have to be somewhere on that list too. Maybe, in a way, metaphorically?, the Book of Exodus? If I think about it more I’m guessing more titles will come to mind so I’ll stop thinking about it now.

Kiedy głowa Kościoła katolickiego i jeden z najważniejszych inżynierów w branży AI stają na jednej scenie, wiedz, że sprawa dotyczy nas wszystkich.

Papież Leon XIV opublikował właśnie przełomową encyklikę „Magnifica Humanitas” poświęconą sztucznej inteligencji. Zamiast całkowicie potępiać nową technologię, Watykan ostrzega przed cyfrowym kolonializmem i wzywa do wyrwania AI z rąk monopolistów. Smaczku całej sytuacji dodaje fakt, że w oficjalnym, doktrynalnym dokumencie papież posiłkuje się cytatami z… J.R.R. Tolkiena.

Zbieżność interesów. Watykan i twórcy modelu Claude wyznaczają etyczne granice AI

Cyfrowy kolonializm. Nasze dane to nowe metale ziem rzadkich

Encyklika uderza w sam rdzeń współczesnego modelu biznesowego korporacji technologicznych. Leon XIV wprost krytykuje gromadzenie „nowych form własności, takich jak patenty, algorytmy i dane”. Zwraca uwagę, że całe regiony świata są dziś poddawane nowemu rodzajowi ekstrakcji danych medycznych czy demograficznych, często pod płaszczykiem innowacji i pomocy.

Watykan zauważa, że te informacje stały się nowymi „metalami ziem rzadkich”. Kto ma do nich dostęp, ten zyskuje narzędzia do przewidywania kryzysów i kształtowania rynków. Jeśli wiedza ta nie stanie się dobrem wspólnym, papież ostrzega, że era cyfrowa przybierze formę nowego kolonializmu, w którym technologiczne elity zyskają strukturalną dźwignię pozwalającą decydować o przyszłości całych narodów.

AI naśladuje umysł, ale nie ma moralności i ciała

Co ciekawe, Kościół nie odrzuca samej technologii jako użytecznego narzędzia. Sam Watykan wdrożył niedawno system AI do tłumaczenia mszy na smartfonach w 60 językach. Papież apeluje jednak o zachowanie trzeźwego spojrzenia i „rozbrojenie” sztucznej inteligencji – rozumiane jako uwolnienie jej od monopolitycznej kontroli i logiki dominacji.

W dokumencie mocno podkreślono, że dzisiejsze modele to jedynie sprawne symulatory wybranych funkcji intelektu. Maszyny mogą liczyć szybciej od nas, ale nie posiadają ciała, nie dojrzewają poprzez relacje i nie mają moralnego sumienia. Oddanie im pełni władzy i zachłyśnięcie się ich mocą obliczeniową nie sprawi, że staniemy się silniejsi – według encykliki uczyni nas to jedynie wyizolowanymi. Rozwiązaniem ma być budowa „cywilizacji miłości”, w czym pomóc ma m.in. zacytowany w tekście bohater „Władcy Pierścieni” – Gandalf, wzywający do wykorzeniania zła w naszych lokalnych środowiskach, by zostawić przyszłym pokoleniom czystą ziemię.

Niezwykłe odkrycia wewnątrz sieci neuronowych

Watykańskiej prezentacji towarzyszyło wystąpienie Chrisa Olaha, współzałożyciela firmy Anthropic (twórców potężnego modelu Claude). Zamiast PR-owych frazesów, inżynier postawił przed religijnymi liderami realne wyzwania. Jego największe obawy budzi perspektywa masowej utraty miejsc pracy oraz fakt, że zyski z rewolucji AI nie są dziś dzielone globalnie.

Szef Anthropic podzielił się również niezwykle fascynującym spostrzeżeniem z pracy laboratoryjnej. Przyznał, że badając wewnętrzne struktury najnowszych modeli AI, naukowcy znajdują mechanizmy, które funkcjonalnie przypominają ludzkie reakcje emocjonalne, takie jak strach, żal czy satysfakcja. Choć sami inżynierowie wciąż badają, co dokładnie oznaczają te stany w kodzie maszyny, papież Leon XIV docenił tę szczerość. Podziękował twórcy za obecność i zapowiedział gotowość do kontynuowania dialogu, by wspólnie szukać bezpiecznej drogi dla ludzkości w epoce sztucznej inteligencji.

Excerpt: "Today, we talk about dragons. I refer specifically to the greedy, northern (often fire-breathing) variety as described in Beowulf and featured in Tolkien’s #Hobbit, and I will consider how these monsters present #EnvironmentalCatastrophe as a direct result of #hoarding and #greed.

"My discussion of dragons and climate change continues my recent series of blogs interested in placing medieval literature (and in this case also modern medievalism) in conversation with current crises. This blog develops an earlier argument made in a paper at a 'Tolkien in Vermont' conference (2014), titled 'Dragonomics: Smaug and #Pollution on Middle-Earth,' in which I argue that pollution in Tolkien’s Hobbit is linked to both the literal destruction by the dragon, and the rampant greed that motivates Smaug and ultimately initiates the plunder and violence at the Battle of Five Armies."
