Pack up the car

None really. I’m not much of a traveler so no book or movie has inspired me to travel. In fact, the first movie I thought of this morning inspired me not to travel and that’s The Wizard of Oz. When Dorothy wakes up in her bed and tells us if she ever goes looking for her heart’s desire again she won’t look any further than her own back yard because if it’s not there, it was never lost to begin with, it made sense to me. Stay home, stay safe. Kind of a sheltered existence, but it works. About the best a book has ever done for me is inspire me to want to travel. Travels With Charley, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. On the Road. I suppose The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the Hobbit books might have to be somewhere on that list too. Maybe, in a way, metaphorically?, the Book of Exodus? If I think about it more I’m guessing more titles will come to mind so I’ll stop thinking about it now.

I always thought that #JRRTolkien's #Smaug was a metaphor for the #IndustrialAge and #WealthHoarding. Excerpt: "Today, we talk about dragons. I refer specifically to the greedy, northern (often fire-breathing) variety as described in Beowulf and featured in Tolkien’s #Hobbit, and I will consider how these monsters present #EnvironmentalCatastrophe as a direct result of #hoarding and #greed.

"My discussion of dragons and climate change continues my recent series of blogs interested in placing medieval literature (and in this case also modern medievalism) in conversation with current crises. This blog develops an earlier argument made in a paper at a 'Tolkien in Vermont' conference (2014), titled 'Dragonomics: Smaug and #Pollution on Middle-Earth,' in which I argue that pollution in Tolkien’s Hobbit is linked to both the literal destruction by the dragon, and the rampant greed that motivates Smaug and ultimately initiates the plunder and violence at the Battle of Five Armies."

Toasting the Professor

As in years past, January 3rd is a special evening. Don and I joined other J.R.R. Tolkien fans from around the world in raising a glass to toast the birthday of this much loved author, J.R.R. Tolkien, at precisely 21:00 (9:00pm) local time. I have chosen a special combination of cranberry juice and soda for the occasion.

The toast is simply “The Professor”.

J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the classical mythological world of The Hobbit, The Lord of The Rings, and The Silmarillion, created a collection of legends set in a fictional universe.  He once said that “War deepened and sobered my imagination and stimulated my love of fantasy.”  The months in the trenches of WWI made a lasting impression, which is reflected within his writings.  Even so, J.R.R. Tolkien did not yield to despondency.  His response was to embrace life as a remarkable adventure to be experienced abundantly and completely.

In today’s tumultuous world, Tolkien’s narratives offer an escape to fantastical realms where courage and hope prevail. His stories remind us of the strength found in friendship and the potential for personal growth. His writing reflects deep philosophical and moral questions, encouraging us to contemplate our values, choices, and the nature of power and its consequences.

“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
