  6. Is it a love letter to Mother Earth? A fascination of the night sky and space? Longing for home and family? Geopolitical commentary? Statement on human want? I don't know. I tried three times to appreciate this book and figure out why it won the 2024 #BookerPrize for #fiction. I failed. It is on the pile to go to the little #library down the street.

Magnificent and massive, Shree's "simple" story is more an exploration on gender, aging, cultural mores, history and politics, feminism, and probably a thousand other topics. Truly a slow-paced and magical page-turner!

  12. My Review of #ProphetSong by Paul Lynch.
"In the context of a fascist state, the novel explores themes such as #parenthood, professionalism, ageing, bureaucracy, and marriage. But of all of Prophet Song’s themes, a defining one is power—specifically, the power a capitalist state can have over working-class people"

  13. 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: "𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝗼𝗻𝗴" 𝗯𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 𝗟𝘆𝗻𝗰𝗵 -

Lynch's suffocating prose captures the experience of civilians who wait too long, denying a democracy's fall.

  14. Moved on to another #LiteraryPrize winner but keep thinking about the terrifying Prophet Song and speed at which #freedoms and #humanrights can disappear.Lynch's paragraph-only writing style quickens the pace of the novel and demise of rights and freedoms. Final pages speaking of the prophet song seem to suggest that it has always been this way but not everywhere. So we should be prepared to cross the channel in that raft when #fascism comes to us. #bookstodon #books #BookerPrize

  22. Currently reading #LiberationDay by #GeorgeSaunders.

#Saunders is my favorite living writer, the winner of not only the 2017 #ManBookerPrize, but also a #MacArthur #GeniusGrant. If you haven't read anything by him yet, I recommend starting with the hilarious but acerbic short story #SeaOak, or the much gentler #Fox8.
