Bunch of low key Tolkien nerds at work, and for my sins I'm contemplating starting a weekly lunchtime The One Ring game. Snag a conference room, order a pizza, do my best impression of Ian McKellen's Gandalf impression for an hour - could be fun!

While by all accounts Free League Publishing did excellent work with their #TheOneRing #ttrpg for #Tolkien 's #MiddleEarth , I think it's not a setting I would enjoy much.
That's because of the overwhelming theme of loss and decline in the setting. Yes, Sauron's minions can be thwarted and Sauron himself will eventually be defeated. But still, the world will decline and become less and less fantastic over time. And this loss can be staved off for a while - indeed, that's what the rings of the Elves did - but not stopped.
And that's a bit too depressing for my tastes.

Having the PCs take part in those big events themselves wouldn’t really work. Instead, maybe the heroes, in the Third Age, collect Elven songs and stories that match the album’s songs—perhaps for Bilbo’s collection? Along the way, they experience events that reflect those themes or visit places tied to them.

Moving along, in 2025, I'll tackle a new, weekly #OSE game (#TheHallsOfArdenVul), as well as continuing campaigns of OSE, #CallOfCthulhu, #DCCRPG, #DnD5e, #TheOneRing, and #TravellerRPG from 2024. And at the very least, I'll get to play in person at #CanCon, if not other cons and game days (possible now because I've finally settled down in a city). In all likelihood, I'll probably finally catch COVID, but that's the price of assembling in crowds these days, I guess.
