  1. There are two compliments about my home that I treasure when visitors say them:

    It smells good in here

It looks just like a hobbit hole; it's cozy.

For screen readers [ Click to expand ] A six-panel comic in a cute Japanese chibi manga style follows Lily, Mira, and Barath inside an ancient library filled with towering bookshelves, stone arches, wooden tables, candles, books, and rolled scrolls. 5. Q: Why Didn’t The Elves Destroy The Three Rings?

ANSWER: People have asked many questions about the Rings of Power. I received the following question about the Elven rings in July 2025:

… why did the Elves keep the Three Rings all those years, instead of destroying them? They had access to Mount Doom for at least the first millennia of the 3rd Age. The Keepers wanted to keep the power […]

  7. Q: When Does A Tolkien Question Stop Being About Tolkien?

ANSWER: Through the years I receive occasional thoughtful opinions or responses to recent posts on this blog, where long-time readers feel I may have strayed beyond their expectations or – in some cases – comfort zones. Those two areas are not the same (in my eyes). There may be other, unseen boundaries I occasionally cross. Years ago, […]

  11. I had to put down Robert Tally's "Mismeasure of Orcs" partway through. His thesis (that Tolkien's orcs encode racism and classism) is pursued with genuine dedication, but the evidence keeps coming up short, and what's there is consistently lifted out of context or misread.

I'm not saying Tolkien was without blind spots when it came to race and class. He was a man of his era (or, perhaps more correctly, of even earlier eras).

  13. Q: Why Were Arnor And Gondor Separate After Isildur Died?

ANSWER: I received the following question from a reader in November 2025:

Why were Armor and Gondor sundered after Isildur’s death, if long-range communications with the Palàntiri was a thing?

Technically, the realm of Elendil persisted until Third Age year 861, when Amlaith and his two (unnamed) brothers divided Arnor into three […]

  15. Q: Did The Mouth Of Sauron Survive The War Of The Ring?

ANSWER: I received this question in October 2025:

Do you think the Mouth of Sauron could have survived Sauron’s defeat?

Therefore, could he still be alive during the fourth age and still roaming Middle earth and represent a menace?

I can see different ways he might have survived. So far as I know, unless there is some letter out there […]

  19. Q: Were The Shire Hobbits White-skinned?

ANSWER: This question was inspired by Andy Serkis’ recent response to criticisms about his casting for The Hunt for Gollum. Serkis, according to Variety and other sources, said that “… I don’t think we will be doing a politically correct just-casting-for-the sake-of-casting-and-ticking-boxes version of the film…” He added, “So, it’s where […]

  21. "If you want to be a 'Tolkien based his elves on Norse mythology' purist [...] yes, there ARE (probably) black-skinned Elves in Middle-earth. [...] Period. End of argument. If you want all your so-called “Tolkien elves” to be white-skinned, you lose. You’re wrong. Get over yourselves. You don’t deserve to be called Tolkien fans. You’re just people who obsess over hateful, toxic ideas and you ignore the author and his own points of view." 👍

  24. Q: If Ents Were In The Shire, How Could Treebeard Not Know?

ANSWER: Earlier this year, a stunning letter by J.R.R. Tolkien came to light. In February 1966 he wrote to Jenny Hall and said:

Thank you very much for your nice letter. I have been in most parts of Wales, but the place names I use are made up from English models or borrowed from books, though Crickhollow was actually meant to […]
