Proud and delighted to share with you the magical second part of our Alberta Unbound Kreisel Lecture mini series - back-to-back talks by queer Trinidadian-Canadian novelist Shani Mootoo, and franco-manitobain poet, playwright and prof Lise Gaboury-Diallo, reflecting on place, indentity, and the diverse definitions of Canadian literatures. https://open.spotify.com/episode/7bjaImPhBfbfop06793Ohy?si=jyGvo4pHT-iUCAMdgvjZCg&utm_source=copy-link #yeg #Edmonton #ualberta #CanLit #AlbertsUnbound

A very special episode of Alberta Unbound for you! This year marked the 20th anniversary of the University of Alberta’s Kreisel Lecture, named for the great Edmonton author and academic, Henry Kreisel. Normally, CBC Radio’s flagship doc program IDEAS broadcasts the annual literary lecture. But this year, IDEAS opted not to do so - which means WE have the honouring of sharing the podcast with you. .
This year’s special anniversary lecture featured three remarkable authors - Richard Van Camp, Shani Mootoo and Lise Gaboury-Diallo. Today, we’ve dropped the first episode, featuring a lovely talk by Richard, an Edmonton-based Dene novelist and essayist. But the whole thing kicks off with my own appreciation of Henry Kreisel, a mentor whom I adored. A very special pre-Canada Day treat for you all. #AlbertaUnbound #yeg #Edmonton #ualberta #canlit

Leaving Ottawa dark & early this morning, so I can be home in Edmonton in time to serve as MC & onstage interviewer for the 20th anniversary Kreisel Lecture at the University of Alberta tonight! https://www.ualberta.ca/en/events/alumni/2026-kreisel-lecture-special-20th-anniversary-edition.html #yeg #Edmonton #ualberta #CanLit

Earlier this month, I hosted a live panel at the University of Alberta’s International Week, with Anne McLellan, former deputy PM, Rickey Yada, the Dean of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and Dr. Charlie Mballa, a poli Sci prof at Campus Saint-Jean. I’m very proud of the resulting podcast, about how Canada, and Alberta, step up to this global moment. https://open.spotify.com/episode/3Ycn1fRLsEnVhh0r5QTiuH?si=dBwUDTdATta483OGitQouA #AlbertaUnbound #cdnpoli #ualberta #Edmonton #yeg #Alberta #Canada #abpoli #separatism #sovereignty #Trump #francophonie #trade

Hello Edmonton! Next Friday, February 6, Alberta Unbound is coming live to the University of Alberta as part of International Week. Please come help me shoot the breeze in the Tory Breezeway with three phenomenal panelists, as we tackle the question of Alberta’s evolving role on the world stage, in this time of new world disorder. https://www.ualberta.ca/en/events/international/iweek-2026/alberta-unbound-live-taping-at-i-week.html #Edmonton #yeg #UAlberta #AlbertaUnbound #Alberta

Dr. David Wishart is one of Canada’s most acclaimed scientists, a pioneer in the field of metabolomics. Debby Waldman is an award-winning children’s author. When a Métis trapper’s son met a New York rabbi’s daughter? Let’s just say there was chemistry. Meet this delightful couple in this latest Alberta Unbound. https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/alberta-unbound/id1511810939?i=1000740687005 #AlbertaUnbound #ualberta #yeg #Edmonton #Alberta #abpoli #cdnpoli #metabolomics #NSERC #TMIC

Today, Dr. David Wishart, a professor of biology AND computer science at University of Alberta won Canada’s highest honour for science & engineering, the Herzberg Gold Medal, for his pioneering work in metabolomics. Years ago, I worked with Dr. Wishart’s equally brilliant wife, Debby Waldman, when she wrote a humour column and book reviews for the Edmonton Journal. So it was a double thrill to be at the big NSERC reception, hosted by House of Commons Speaker Francis Scarpaleggia, to cheer on one of Edmonton’s scientific giants. Mazel tov to David and to the University of Alberta.. #yeg #UAlberta #Edmonton #NSERC #metabolomics #ComputationalMetabolomics #cdnpoli

Excellent article in our student newspaper about stalled negotiations and the prospect of a strike at #UAlberta.
https://thegatewayonline.ca/2025/09/aasua-intent-on-strike-vote-after-negotiations-break-down/
Students are smart - trained in critical thinking, and able to see thru the spin. We academics see it; it's a shame the employer and the government don't.
-
Looks like #UAlberta may be on the path to a strike of its academic staff - the third such strike in Alberta's history, and the second in our public higher-ed sector.
Very telling that the union's announcement gives details, but the employer's announcement is nothing but rhetoric and spin: https://www.ualberta.ca/en/bargaining/updates/2025/09/u-of-a-bargaining-upate-2025-09-19-bargaining-update.html
Discussing it in class, my students noticed the difference.

Magazine deadlines being what they are, I actually wrote this in June, weeks before Danielle Smith and the UCP began their abhorrent attacks on immigrants and refugees. Somehow, current events have conspired to make this piece more timely than I could have imagined. https://albertaviews.ca/stop-scapegoating-international-students/ #Alberta #ableg #abpoli #yeg #yyc #SenateofCanada #foreignstudents #UAlberta #Canada #cdnpoli

CW: Academic teaching gripes
Anyway, thanks for letting me rant. We'll get through this. I will be fine. My students will be fine.
It will all pass, and life will go on.
And if, in all of this, I find a way to effectively counter the deeply bone-headed and alienating way admin goes about these things, I'll let you know.

Academic unions protect academic workers and, by extension, higher education, students' learning, and publicly-funded research.
These are valuable sources of knowledge and skills that aren't (yet) beholden to political whims and social fads.

The City of Edmonton has declared today, March 21, as Save Soil Day. I was at City Hall for the presentation of the official proclamation, and to speak to the gathered group about our recent Senate report on soil health. Tomorrow, the Save Soil group hosts a free double-bill at Campus Saint-Jean theatre: first, the documentary film Common Ground, followed by a one-woman show by Dale Hamilton called She Won’t Come in From the Fields. #yeg #yegcc #Edmonton #SenateofCanada #ualberta #SoilHealth

Earlier this week, I had a honour of joining two of Edmonton, and Canada’s, most extraordinary queer rights advocates, Doug Stollery KC and Justice Julie Lloyd, onstage at the #ualberta Timms Theatre to discuss the impact of the historic Vriend decision, which established equal rights protections for #LGBQT Canadians. Our conversation, moderated by Fiona Kelly, the new Dean of Law, was inspired by a screening of the terrific Vriend documentary Pride vs Prejudice. #yeg #Edmonton #Vriend

Pre-registration has closed - but there are still plenty of tickets at the door for this showing of Pride vs Prejudice - which includes FREE SNACKS at the pre show reception. Super excited to be invited to give this talk at the University of Lethbridge on March 27. I've been thinking a lot about temporality and childhood in this new era of fascism. #uleth #ualberta #academicchatter #ChildhoodStudies #childism https://www.ulethbridge.ca/notice/events/childhood-time-monsters

Wonderful news for Edmonton's AI mage Rich Sutton, for the University of Alberta, and for AMII, the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute. I've had a couple of chances over the years to interview Rich and his colleagues, and tour their labs. Their work on reinforcement learning - far more interesting than LLM - has made Edmonton a real AI centre of excellence. Meeting him is the closest I'll ever come to meeting Gandalf. https://www.ualberta.ca/en/folio/2025/03/computing-science-professor-wins-turing-award.html #yeg #Edmonton #ualberta #TuringAward #Turing #AI

Senator Rob Black will be in Edmonton this week to deliver the annual Bentley Lecture in Sustainable Agriculture this Wednesday. Rob, who until prorogation chaired the Senate’s agriculture committee, was the guiding force behind our major study of soil health in Canada. He’ll be speaking (mostly) about our report. The lecture, at the Westin, is free and open to the public. Rob is a peach of a guy! Delighted to welcome him to #yeg. https://www.ualberta.ca/en/renewable-resources/events-and-lectures/bentley-lecture/index.html #ualberta #Edmonton #SoilHealth #cdnpoli

Trying to stem the tide of anti-intellectual, anti-conservative "Conservative" funding cuts in Alberta. Here's the latest appeal - to protect funding and front-line academic workers at the Univesity of Alberta: https://action.supportthespark.ca/letters/stand-up-for-the-university-of-alberta?source=direct_link&
