The U.S. Justice Department last week charged Oxygen Forensics — officially headquartered in Virginia — of concealing that it was actually owned and operated by Russians. The company develops and sells powerful software capable of extracting and analyzing information from smartphones and computers, a process known as "digital forensics."
According to public records reviewed by POLITICO, Oxygen was used in at least two EU-funded projects aimed at improving how electronic evidence is collected, processed and shared in criminal investigations.
The first project, EVIDENCE, (European Informatics Data Exchange Framework for Courts and Evidence), which received more than €1.9 million in EU funding between 2014 and 2016, listed Oxygen Forensics among the companies consulted on how Europe could better handle and exchange digital criminal evidence. That placed the company in a wider network that included EU police agency Europol, judicial cooperation agency Eurojust and the European Anti-Fraud Office's digital forensics unit."

Bloccato traffico di migranti dall'Europa continentale al Regno Unito via aerea
Il 22 settembre 2026 forze di polizia di Austria, Italia, Spagna e Regno Unito (UK) hanno proceduto a 6 arresti e 10 perquisizioni domiciliari, sequestrando documenti d'identità, attrezzature elettroniche, prove e ingenti somme di denaro.
La rete criminale nei cui riguardi si è svolta l'operazione faceva uso massiccio di documenti falsificati per consentire viaggi illegali attraverso gli aeroporti dell' area Schengen e paesi associati.
I migranti entravano nell'UE con passaporti genuini e, in molti casi, visti turistici Schengen validi. Una volta all'interno dell'UE, distruggevano i documenti originali e li sostituivano con documenti contraffatti forniti dalla rete criminale.
La cella della Rete di Vienna (Austria) era coinvolta nella fornitura di documenti falsi, con cittadini afghani e pakistani.Collegata a una rete di servizi, tra cui negozi di telefonia mobile, presumibilmente per riciclare i proventi illeciti.
Quella spagnola forniva un elevato numero di documenti contraffatti. Ha facilitato la distribuzione di oltre 1.000 documenti falsi, spediti tramite corrieri dagli Emirati Arabi Uniti verso UE, Nord e Sud America e Caraibi.
La rete criminale ha generato oltre 2 milioni di euro.
Europol ha fornito supporto operativo, dispiegando anche due esperti del Centro Europeo contro il Traffico di Migranti (#ECAMS , istituito a marzo 2026 per migliorare lo scambio sistematico di informazioni e il coordinamento degli sforzi, inclusa l'espertise in OSINT e indagini finanziari) inviate in Italia e Regno Unito per coordinare le operazioni e incrociare dati in tempo reale con i database di #Europol.Hanno partecipato: Austria, Belgio, Finlandia, Francia, Germania, Grecia, Islanda, Irlanda, Italia, Paesi Bassi, Norvegia, Portogallo, Spagna, Svezia, Svizzera, Regno Unito e Stati Uniti.
