  12. 🌍 World Philosophy Day 2024: Philosophy for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future 🌱

As a cognitive scientist, I often find myself reflecting on how the mind shapes, and is shaped by, the world around us. On this World Philosophy Day, we are asked to consider two powerful themes: ‘Philosophy for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future’ and ‘Bridging Social Gaps.’

Philosophy has always been the foundation of our search for meaning, ethics, and societal cohesion.
In today’s fast-evolving world, these questions become even more pressing. How do we build a future that is both inclusive and sustainable? And how do we address the deepening divides in society, where resources, opportunities, and access to knowledge are unevenly distributed?

From my perspective in cognitive science and studying philosophy of mind, the answer lies in understanding how our minds interpret fairness, empathy, and justice is central to answering these questions. Human cognition is not just about individual thought processes but is intricately linked to the social structures we navigate and deeply intertwined with social dynamics—our sense of community, belonging, and shared purpose. By embracing philosophical inquiry, we can gain deeper insights into how cognitive biases and societal structures and norms, impact inclusivity and sustainability.

I’ve come to appreciate how our mental frameworks—shaped by culture, experience, and cognition—can either bridge or deepen divides.

As we celebrate today, let’s commit to using philosophy not only as a tool for deep personal reflection but as a collective resource to guide us toward a better, more just, and more inclusive and equitable future for all.
