When I say replies are a failed UI it's because, well, what does "reply" mean?
For some it means: I am replying to you, as a person. We are having a conversation.
For others it means: I want my comment to appear below this post. I am talking to the other readers here, not to the person I'm replying to.
Those are two extremely different use cases, with different intentions and audiences, and they require vastly different responses, but they're smushed together in the same UI.
