    "Washington State University horticulturist #JeffreyWall partnered with members of the #Mikmaq #FirstNations people of #Canada to create a new, #IndigenousCentered model of the connections that link humans with plants, animals and the environment.

    "Wall interviewed over a dozen traditional knowledge keepers in Unama'ki, the #CapeBreton Island homeland of the Eskasoni Mi'kmaq. He asked tribal elders and allies to describe #BioculturalConnectivity — the relationship between human cultures and local #ecosystems — as they see it. The findings were published in Environmental Science & Policy.

    " 'I wanted to show the connective forces that the Mi'kmaq prioritize,' Wall said. 'The goal was to be in tune with their deep #CulturalHeritage, traditions and the #indigenization of the future that they want to promote.'

    "With more than 66,000 registered members, the Mi'kmaq are a resilient people native to the U.S. Northeast and Canada's Atlantic provinces who are revitalizing their language and growing their landholdings. Wall's work can guide future mapping and inform the institute's land acquisition strategy.

    "The project reflects the concept of #TwoEyedSeeing — understanding the world from both #Indigenous and #Western approaches — introduced by Mi'kmaq elders Albert and Murdena Marshall.

    " 'There is a growing understanding that environmental conditions can improve if we bring more Indigenous ways of knowing and being into the conversation,' said Lisa Young, executive director of the Unama'ki Institute of Natural Resources.     "A vision in Waterbury is en route to becoming reality, as the city received a grant from the state this week to help kickstart the Risdon #DamRemoval Project on South Main Street.

    "The $339,000 Long Island Sound Ecosystems Grant from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will fund an important early stage of the project to remove the aging Risdon Dam.

    "The grant will cover the environmental investigation, engineering design and permitting required for the removal of the dam, which is located behind the former factory at 2100 South Main St.

    "A release this week from the city announced the award from DEEP and explained the purpose of the project.

    "Removing the dam will restore the natural flow of #HopevillePondBrook, a tributary of the #NaugatuckRiver within the #LongIslandSound #watershed.

    "The project aims to improve #AquaticHabitat, reconnect #StreamCorridors, reduce #FloodRisk and eliminate a deteriorating structure that poses safety risks for nearby properties and infrastructure, according to city officials.

    "It will take approximately one year to complete the planning, design and permitting phase. Then, the construction will move on to bidding.

    "On Wednesday, Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski, Jr. said the grant represents another significant investment in the city’s infrastructure and #EnvironmentalStewardship.

    " 'Removing the Risdon Dam will improve the health of Hopeville Pond Brook, reduce flood risks and help restore a more resilient #ecosystem for #FutureGenerations,' Pernerewski said.

    "The mayor also thanked #DEEP for its support and collaboration in helping the project move forward.

    "DEEP Commissioner #KatieDykes, who will be leaving her position this month, said the project marks the state’s commitment to protecting and ensuring the health and perseverance of its waterways and the Long Island Sound Watershed.

    ABSTRACT: Arable farming practices dictate both crop cycles and soil dynamics, and are central to agriculture's environmental impact and its mitigation. Sowing and harvesting mark the beginning and end of the growing season, while tillage modifies soil structure during the dormant period. Although well-established methods exist for delineating the growing season using phenology and optical data, the detection of farming practices, particularly tillage, remains underexplored. This study investigates the strengths of radar and optical data to retrieve sowing, harvest, and tillage dates at the field level, and proposes a novel Hybrid Bare Soil Radar Index (HyBRIS). Based on Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2, HyBRIS merges optical and radar data into a single index using a temporally weighted mean. Local minima and maxima of the time series are used to detect farming practices across European sites. Validation is carried out against a reference dataset comprising 238 fields in 11 EU countries, including 462 sowing, 374 harvest, and 388 tillage events covering more than 40 crop types over 8 years. Compared to the Copernicus High Resolution Layer Croplands product (HRL-Cropland), the proposed method based on HyBRIS time series improved sowing and harvest dates detection (MAE 26 and 23 days, respectively). Additionally, this method enabled tillage dates estimation during dormant periods (MAE = 28 days), but tended to overestimate the number of tillage events (producer's accuracy = 97%, user's accuracy = 70%). Incorporating soil moisture data is advised for reducing false positives. The results highlight the potential of optical, radar, and hybrid indices for monitoring agricultural management and supporting environmental stewardship…”

    "The [wastewater] treatment plant is the last significant piece in the Green Gosport Initiative, named after the 17th century town that once existed on the island. For the better part of 10 years, Star Island Corporation has been working to become a #sustainable community.

    "The initiative has included the installation of the solar array in 2015, which has reduced by more than 75% the amount of diesel fuel for the generators that once powered everything on the island. Electricity consumption has dropped by more than 35% by making a change to LED lights and purchasing energy-efficient appliances in the kitchen. All disposable packaging, utensils and straws are biodegradable, and there are bins everywhere that encourage guests to properly dispose of their waste.

    "#Sludge from the treatment plant is dried and composted with waste #cardboard and #WoodChips, instead of being sent to a #landfill. The #composting program began in 2014, and last year for the first time, the first batch was ready for testing by the state. It was so clean 'we got approval this spring to use that product without restriction, anywhere. So this spring, we used it as mulch in the flower pots,' Simard said."
