In 1970, the son-in-law of Egypt’s Nasser called the Israeli embassy from a booth. 📞 The Mossad couldn't believe it! Soon, Marwan was feeding them guarded war plans. 📂 He was so valuable that chief Zvi Zamir handled him personally. 🤝 Marwan lived a double life of luxury, getting paid millions by Israel while serving President Sadat. 💰 Was it greed or a plan? 🇪🇬🇮🇱 #TheAngel #Espionage #Sadat #Nasser #SecretAgent #MossadAsset #HighStakes #EliteSpy #Cairo

  4. #Movies . . .

Since I couldn't watch #SentimentalValue or #SecretAgent (because they're foreign language films, in whole or part, & because my streaming channel lacks the subtitle tracks), I decided to watch #BlueMoon instead.

This movie stars #EthanHawk, who plays the songwriter #LorenzHart, who is holding court in a bar & talking virtually non-stop. Quite a change of pace for Hawk, who I normally associate with #actionmovies

Hawk is nominated for Best Actor for his performance in "Blue Moon," as are Timothée Chalamet in "Marty Supreme"; Leonardo DiCaprio in "One Battle After Another"; Michael B. Jordan in "Sinners" & Wagner Moura, "The Secret Agent".

I've now seen all of these performances, except Moura in "Secret Agent" & among these nominees, I like Jordan's in "Sinners" best & I hope he wins along with the movie for Best Picture.

    We'll see . . .

  15.  I Became an International Spy

Hello, dear readers! It’s Tina here, and today I’m about to take you on an adventure that’s far more exciting than my usual tales of burnt toast and awkward encounters at the grocery store. Grab your popcorn, because things are about to get juicy.

The Mysterious Text That Started My Spy Movie Fantasy

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon, the kind where you don’t want to leave your house unless absolutely necessary. I was lounging on my couch, wrapped in a blanket like a burrito, binge-watching a show about spies—because, of course, that’s what normal people do when they’re procrastinating on their to-do lists. Suddenly, my phone buzzed. It was a message from an unrecognized number. Now, normally I’d ignore such messages, but let’s be real: I was getting bored, and curiosity is my middle name. (Okay, it’s actually Marie, but “Curiosity” would be way cooler.)

The message read: “We need your skills. Meet us at the corner of 5th and Main. Wear something inconspicuous.” Well, if that doesn’t sound like the start of a spy movie, I don’t know what does. I immediately jumped up, threw on my most inconspicuous outfit—which, let’s be honest, is hard for me because I’m the kind of person who accidentally wears neon colors to a funeral—and set off on what would become the craziest night of my life.

The Rendezvous Point: Meeting the Secret Organization

As I approached the rendezvous point, my mind raced with possibilities. Was I about to be recruited into a secret international spy organization? Would I have to do cool things like parkour over rooftops or engage in thrilling car chases? Spoiler alert: I didn’t even get to ride in a cool car, but more on that later.

I arrived at the meeting spot and spotted a group of people dressed in black. Naturally, I felt like I had stumbled onto a scene from a Mission: Impossible movie. One of them, a tall figure with sunglasses (at night, mind you), stepped forward. “Are you Tina?” he asked. I nodded, feeling like I was about to be initiated into some elite club. “Welcome. We’ve been watching you.”

Now, I’ll admit, that phrase sent a little shiver down my spine. I mean, I know I’ve had my fair share of embarrassing moments, but I didn’t think my awkwardness was that noteworthy! Nevertheless, I was intrigued. They explained that they were part of an international spy group and that they needed someone with my unique skills—read: I can make a mean cup of coffee and tell bad jokes at the worst possible moments.

After a brief interview that involved some hilariously awkward questions like, “Can you run in high heels?” (Spoiler: I can’t), I was officially recruited. And just like that, I was no longer just Tina, the burrito-wrapped couch potato; I was now Tina, the international spy!

My First Undercover Mission and Spy Training Experience

My first assignment was to gather intel on a suspicious looking café downtown that was rumored to be a front for a secret organization. Sounds exciting, right? Well, when I arrived, I found that the café was actually just a really popular spot for hipsters who love artisanal coffee and avocado toast. I spent an hour there, blending in by pretending to read a book while secretly scrolling through my phone. Not quite the thrilling spy work I had envisioned.

Learning to Blend In: A Lesson in Spy Training

But then came the best part: I got to attend spy training! You know, the kind where you learn how to dodge lasers, pick locks, and—get this—how to blend in at fancy parties. Imagine me, Tina, awkwardly practicing my “sophisticated” walk while trying not to spill my drink. Spoiler: I spilled my drink. A lot.

The Gala Infiltration: An Undercover Mission in a Bright Dress

Eventually, I was assigned to my first real mission: to infiltrate a gala hosted by the very organization we were investigating. Glamorous, right? I donned a sparkly dress that made me feel like a million bucks, and my partner, who was a real-life James Bond type (seriously, he could have been a model), gave me a few pointers on how to act suave. “Just remember, confidence is key,” he said, which is easier said than done when you’re trying to fit in among a crowd of people who look like they stepped out of a fashion magazine.

The Truth About the Secret Organization

The night of the gala arrived, and I was a bundle of nerves mixed with excitement. I practiced my fake laugh in the mirror (you know the one, the “Oh, you’re so funny!” laugh), and off I went, pretending to be someone I wasn’t. Halfway through the event, I found myself cornered by a suspicious-looking gentleman who seemed to have taken a keen interest in my “sparkling” personality. He leaned in and whispered, “I know what you’re really here for.” My heart raced, and I thought, “Oh no, this is it! I’m going to blow my cover!”

But instead of panicking, I pulled from my deep well of terrible jokes (which, if I’m being honest, is a significant part of my personality). “Oh really? You know I’m just here for the free hors d’oeuvres, right?” I replied with a grin. To my surprise, he laughed! Maybe my awkwardness was my secret weapon after all.

As the night progressed, I ended up dancing the night away with my fellow spies, trying not to step on anyone’s toes. It was a wild mix of clinking glasses, laughter, and, of course, more spills. I even managed to sneak away to gather some intel without anyone noticing—though I’m pretty sure my bright red dress kind of gave me away.

Retiring from the International Spy Life

In the end, we didn’t uncover anything too scandalous. Turns out, the organization was just a bunch of rich people enjoying their wealth, and I left the gala with a full belly and an even fuller heart. My partner and I ended the night with a promise of more adventures to come.

So, what did I learn from my brief stint as a spy? Well, for starters, I learned that I’m definitely not cut out for the high-stakes world of espionage. I prefer my excitement with a side of Netflix and snacks. But hey, at least I can say I’ve dabbled in the spy life, and I have some hilarious stories to tell.

Next time you’re binge-watching a spy thriller, just remember: if a mysterious message pops up on your phone, it might just lead you to the wildest night of your life—or at least a really awkward dance party.

Until next time, keep being fabulous, and remember, whether you’re saving the world or just trying to survive another day, a little humor goes a long way!

    Love,

    Tina 🌟

John Bingham, author of 17 thriller, spy and detective novels, also worked for MI5 during WW2 and after. At one time he shared a room with John le Carré, who partly based George Smiley on Bingham.

Bingham's second novel, Five Roundabouts to Heaven (aka The Tender Poisoner) was adapted for film in 2007 (Married Life).

  23. Unlike J R R Tolkien (see last week's post) Graham Greene stayed the course, and worked for MI6. He drew on his experience in his parody of intelligence work 'Our Man in Havana'.
His writing circle included T.S. Eliot, Evelyn Waugh, Ian Fleming, and Noel Coward...

His writing process came first - "A love affair had to begin after lunch"

On writing he said: "So much of a novelist’s writing, as I have said, takes place in the unconscious"

  24. Westland Lysander III (SD), Shuttleworth Trust Collection The Lysander was originally designed as an 'army co-operation' aircraft, meaning that it would work with artillery, act as short range transport, and even undertake light attack missions. Indeed a Lysander was the first RAF aircraft to shoot down one of the Luftwaffe machines on the Western front - no less than an He 111 bomber! However, it quickly become obsolescent in its designed role, but found undying fame, as the (SD) designation, meaning Special Duties, reveals. It shuttled agents and resistance fighters to and from small fields in Occupied Europe during WW2. It could carry up to 4 persons in the rear cockpit. This fine flying example is seen at the Shuttleworth Trust's airfield at Old Warden, UK #aircraft #WW2 #aircraftphotography #photography #shuttleworthcollection #avgeek #aviationlovers #secretagent

  26. A favourite film a day for 365 days: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

3 spy movies. I have friends who are dedicated le Carre fans and they can't stand this. Perhaps because it isn't as long-winded and labyrinthine as the book or THAT television version. I love it for its economy - the credit sequence introduces every character - and for making that labyrinthine plot something I can finally understand.

  28. @pallenberg I'm an almost 20 years 😱 listener of #SomaFM, mostly #SecretAgent, #GrooveSalad, and #SpaceStation, as well as the #MissionControl channel where they overlay music with space mission audio (live and archived as well).
    Enjoy! 🎧

  29. @pallenberg I also read some of the books, and it definitely adds depth to the character (not too much, but a bit;) and expands the fun.

The new ones, I feel, often need better writing, but that's also a contemporary #cinema problem. Still pretty good, and looking forward to watching and re-watching them.

Also listening to #SomaFM #SecretAgent where they cut in quotes from James Bond and other spy movies, 10/10 recommend: somafm.com/secretagent/
