I'm in the middle of the prairies. Many people out here grumbled about the carbon tax, but it wasn't a huge make-or-break issue. The grumbling was mainly because the carbon tax affected some regions of the country more than others - Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland basically escaped it on their home electricity bills because of hydroelectric power and nuclear power, but out here in It's Winter Seven Months A Year land, it applied to every joule of electricity, every BTU of natural gas we heat with, and more.
Basically, we were paying more of this tax than many other places. So people grumbled, but they paid, and no one outside the oil-company boardrooms was spitting mad about it.
You know what killed the carbon tax? What turned it into a Big Hairy Deal? When the federal government removed the carbon tax from home heating oil in the Maritimes - heating oil, with a worse carbon footprint than anything else short of coal. And when people out here started asking why people in the Maritimes got relief from the tax while we didn't, a cabinet minister said that "Maybe you should elect more Liberals so you have someone to represent you in this government".
Nakedly saying that the Maritimes elected Liberals, so they got relief, while we elected others, and we get nothing.
Justin Trudeau politicized the carbon tax. And *that* is what killed it.
You can't blame it on the west.

Tenant Farmer
The discussion examines Andrew Wyeth's artwork, focusing on "Tenant Farmer" and its misinterpretation through an Emersonian lens. Critics struggle to appreciate Wyeth's psychological depth, mistaking it for regionalism. Close visual analysis highlights ambiguity in themes of decay and haunting rather than simplistic readings of nature and transcendentalism.

One thing we know about cities and suburbs is they fight over everything. But what if all their leaders came together once a year to talk about regional problems and get to know one another? Would that help? The Detroit area has been doing this for decades with its Mackinac Policy Conference. Now Atlanta is giving it a try. https://saportareport.com/arc-convening-inaugural-regional-assembly-of-public-officials/sections/reports/maria_saporta/ #regionalism

"Stone City, Iowa," Grant Wood, 1930.
Wood (1891-1942) was THE great American Regionalist painter. He's best known for "American Gothic" but so much else he did is worth looking at.
This painting of an idyllic village is actually a depiction of a town in transition. Stone City had been founded as a company town for a limestone quarry, but the limestone business declined with the rise of Portland cement, so the town shrank and shifted into agriculture. This is a fairly idealized scene showing the town now in harmony with its environment, and a place where Wood established an art colony for a couple of years.
Looks like the perfect landscape for an autumn drive...
From the Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, NE.

#Linguistics question! I have an older relative - who would have grown up in Nova Scotia in the late 1940s and through the 1950s. I don't know if it's a generational thing, or a #regionalism, or what, but he uses a term I've never heard anyone else use. Might be only one tiny area; little towns were pretty isolated back then.
#Screws - i.e. hardware you drive into #wood etc - he calls "#screwnails".
Anyone else ever hear them referred to this way?
