Others suggest that #Hitler’s Germany, which pursued an economic policy of self-sufficiency, or #autarky, may be Trump’s real role model. Wherever he got his love of #tariffs & #protectionism, the intellectual antecedents of his approach go back to English mercantilist thinkers of the 16th & 17th centuries, who also viewed trade as a zero-sum enterprise in which one side wins & the other loses.

You may also consider that its greatest proponents on Earth, if you discount the North Sentinelese, have all been fascists and communists, historically known for being spectacular economic fuck-ups and generally lousy company.

When considering the question of self-sufficiency (autarky) for space colonies, consider first just how well autarky has worked as an economic policy for anyone on Earth.
Then realize that you're asking about the possibility of pursuing a damn silly goal in the first place, and go consider something else.

@Hhesterm #isolation The nationalistic and hawkish part of the Russian leadership is not opposed to #sanctions against oligarch, banks or severing all ties with the west. An inward looking and isolated Russia would for them be the ideal scenario, a sovereign socioeconomic #autarky the end of ties with the west, the complete sovereignization of the elite and the substitution of everything possible. The sanctions have only boosted the position of the pro-war & revanchist fractions. 1/2

@hollybrigstocke @financialtimes #Regionalism has a strong & plausible attraction for security - the EU is a good (if uneven) example - #autarky even for medium sized countries has often been unworkable even in the medium term...
of course (as you would likely expect me to say) this is yet more evidence that #Brexit was a myopic & wrong-headed response to UK's ongoing problems
