  3. “The attacks on the #Maidan protests as 'nationalist' ones must, therefore, be called into doubt or at least examined critically. […] The #Ukrainian #revolution is thus paradoxical in many aspects: from being #Eurocentric and #decolonial at the same time to carrying deeply incorporated strands of #socialist ideals of #liberation through #equality as […]

  4. So let's retain the #TrenMaya has some intermodal integration, but it's currently insufficient and has to be improved. On the other hand, I also need to revise a bit my #Eurocentric view on city connectivity rationales: the majority of people does not live in the picturesque-patina-chic colonial city center of Merida. That's where the #European tourists go.

  7. Did you notice that the previous statement is typically #Eurocentric or #Western? Only according to the #Gregorian calendar are there two #Ramadans in a year. According to the #Islamic calendar, this is not the case.

  9. #JaneGoodall's work insisting, with evidence from her brilliant and tenacious fieldwork, that we were not so separate from #animals, and they were much more like us than the #Eurocentric theorists asserted, was so important

  10. Nation #states are not some natural thing and are a modern invention. They've been #normalised to the point of people just wanting them to be permanent. Many borders themselves are also modern and stem from #coloniality. This is why we want to abolish #nationstates.

It's also very #eurocentric that we should live this way and then be told that the #map given to us drawn by #Europeans, is how we should see and understand the #world. You will get #leftists with knee jerk reactions to this as...

"When I started teaching the history of biology, the importance of this pivotal period of scientific history was often diminished in western analysis of science history. Studying the contributions of non-western scholars has shown me what history can teach us about the value of multiculturalism.

The story typically told in the West is that science was invented in ancient Greece and then, following close to a millennium of intellectual darkness, developed in Western Europe over the past 500 years.

Other cultures might have contributed a clever trick here or there, like inventing paper or creating our modern number system, but science as we know it was developed almost entirely by white men. As such it becomes a story of superiority, one that demands gratitude.

The scars of this way of thinking are all over our geopolitical landscape. It shapes how many western leaders interact with other cultures, apparently entitling them to share their intellectual authority without needing to listen to others. It is a mindset that belittles other civilizations and led to centuries of colonial violence."

  14. The Identity Politics of Masculinity as a Colonial Legacy

"The #PreColonial #Indonesian notion of personhood diverges from a western conceptualisation and is expressed instead through #cooperation, #mutuality, #sharing, #caring, and a readiness to #negotiate and #compromise – all of which are characteristics that are associated with feminine qualities and were thus considered inferior according to #Eurocentric understandings of the #subordination of women in #WesternSociety"

"[In this paper] I argue that a hierarchical structure between masculine and the feminine was introduced by the #Dutch #colonisers – a structure in which they considered themselves to represent the superior, masculine side of the binary, whereas the colonised were seen as their effeminate subjects."

  17. @mariapopova #JosephCampbell was a misogynist #Nazi sympathizer who built his popularity on perpetuation and lionization of the myth of the white, male, #Eurocentric person and ideology as the epitome of all #human achievement.

It is long past time to stop using any of his theories as anything but examples of incomplete, incompetent, and incorrect assumptions based on a limited and biased worldview.

    I find this horribly offensive.

I am asking Bing to create me ten sentences that are not the same as ten already provided sentences which only contain English words which match a Mohegan vocabulary list.

    It refuses.

Safety rails have become the new censorship and discrimination tool of the elites.

  21. @FanCityKnits thank you! Yes, i realised this some time ago (and find it a bit annoying in itself - would be nice to have some ways to reach each other beyond existing connections. In particular i would love to make #ClimateDiary less #Eurocentric but it’s really hard). But what i meant is that now it looks like i sometimes don’t see #ClimateDiary posts even from people who I follow, when i search the hashtag.

  23. @malmorrow ‘The European tendency to mistake #Europe for the world – what might be called “the #Eurocentric fallacy” – has obscured our understanding of the #EU and its role in the world. It has led to an idealisation of European integration as a kind of cosmopolitan project: what I call the myth of cosmopolitan Europe. A better way to understand the EU is an expression of #regionalism – which is analogous to nationalism, rather than the opposite of it, as many “pro-Europeans” imagine it to be.’

  24. Many thanks to high-school senior Isaiah Shafqat for doing great work to help make the world a better place: He successfully advocated for a mandatory grade 11 #Indigenous #literature course across Toronto schools. "The purpose of making this class compulsory is to include Indigenous voices in the high school curriculum, to make it a little less #Eurocentric." torontolife.com/city/ive-had-f

  26. @Pidgerydoodar I made this one for a class on language (how do different languages name different bodyparts?) when I tried to find something moderately #GenderNeutral & less #Eurocentric than some of the standards. I literally couldn’t find a neutral one that was a well-proportioned anatomical model. So I had to make them myself 💪🏻💪🏽💪🏿

I instantly realised how useful they were in other contexts 😅

  28. Highly recommend this recording of today’s #NatCen & #KingsCollegeLondon seminar on making #deliberative #democracy part of everyone’s lives. To paraphrase @OliverEscobar

#Deliberation is a way of communicating as old as humanity, it’s not a #Eurocentric story

    And Claudia Chwalisz from #DemocracyNext

Taking part in deliberative processes can have a transformative effect on people, it can ignite their sense of #agency

  30. @abebab That's a very good question and I haven't found the answer yet. So far Mastodon is pretty #eurocentric, but with quite a lot of people from India and South-East Asia + Japan. That's at least my impression so far.

  31. "However, we have reservations to the proposed title, the New #European #Bauhaus. We understand that the reference to the Bauhaus wishes to convey forward and interdisciplinary thinking, but we feel that the allusion to this school, its effects and their specific moment in history, counteracts the aims that this cultural #European #GreenDeal is trying to achieve. We are deeply concerned that the title #NewEuropeanBauhaus is inherently not inclusive. The Bauhaus’ significant cultural impact and short 14-year existence (1919-1933) made it into a predominantly #Western and #Eurocentric legend. The Bauhaus is perceived as the epitome of #Modernism, and a critical reading of Modernity inevitably ties it to a past of #colonial #extractivism and a future of industrial #capitalism."
