Today was this month's Repair Cafe in my city. I think it also marks a full year I've been volunteering at them. I enjoy it a lot.
After last months good results - everything brought to me successfully fixed *except* one item - I got exactly the same result today. A bunch of successes, and one failure. And it's a weird and annoying coincidence - they are basically the same thing, #Sony all-in-one bookshelf #stereo systems. You know the type, they're on the order of a cubic foot and look like a small stack of stereo equipment units, but it's just a cosmetic look. Inside, the tuner, preamp, amp, CD player / changer, tape deck are all one thing. #Boombox in a suit, basically.
Both times, I figured out what was wrong - but I couldn't get to the bits I needed to actually fix them. I got stumped trying to take the front #fascia off the chassis. There's usually a few screws to take the back and/or top off, and then some #clips holding the front fascia to the (usually) one-piece sheet metal sides and bottom. Taking a #spudger to them releases all along the top and sides, but at the bottom of the fascia, it doesn't release - there's something weird about the clips I can't see, and I don't see any #screws responsible, inside or out. I don't want to force it more than I have because it will break.
Any Sony-heads out there know the secret with these things? They're from the 80s and 90s, at least the ones brought into me.

I was looking up screw sizes last night and came across a chart posted on reddit like 12yrs ago. Happened to glance at the top comment. Took me a sec to figure out where that bottom rely was coming from. 😆 #screws #Geography

order is coming to #realraum's machine shack room (in tiny increments :-D )
The usual chaos of screws where nobody can find anything, is in the process of being replaced with a well labeled assortment and some gridfinity boxes, sized to fit the drawer.

Oh! I forgot one thing. (And I ran out of characters...)
Like last month's cafe, I got another toaster that the manufacturer insists has VERY SPECIAL SECRET SAUCE in it, because the case is held together with more "security screws". This time, rather than "security" Torx they were the triangular (not Y or trilobe) screw heads.
Jeebus, people. It's a toaster. You don't need to act like it's 1942 and it's a new highly accurate bombsight or something else that you can't afford to have fall into the enemy's hands.

Screws look beautiful and I like to make them visible in products, but I have to admit that those hidden ones have some style too! It's based on a spring loaded mechanism and were invented by Jeff and Brandon Serle, who are cleanroom engineers.

I'm working through bins of hardware, trying to combine what I already had with a trove my Dad gave me.
Interestingly enough, I found that sorting it tickles the same part of my brain that working on a jigsaw puzzle does.

Big Picture Science for July 14, 2025: Nuts and Bolts
REPEAT
How frequently do you think about fasteners like screws and bolts? Probably not very often. But some of them a storied history, dating back to Egypt in the 3rd century BC. They aren’t just ancient history. They help hold up our bridges and homes today. Join us as we dissect a handful of engineering inventions that keep our world spinning and intact.Guests:
* Roma Agrawal - structural engineer and author of "Nuts and Bolts: Seven Small Inventions That Changed the World (in a Big Way)"
* Ron Gordon - watchmaker, New York CityThis repeat podcast originally aired on May 6, 2024

I finished the couch leg installation. Turns out I just needed the four M8 bolts and four nuts, which I had on hand, no spacers necessary. Still not as easy a job as it seemed. More details in the alt text.

US hardware standards are INSANE.
Working on a prop for my action-figure photo comic, "Minions at Work," and I want to attach some decorative lamp finials upside down as legs for a piece of furniture. Go to store, get some screws. Easy, right? A standard 1/4" screw is 20 pitch thread. But a lamp finial is 1/4" 27 pitch, for reasons that probably made sense to Tommy Edison. Can't find screws like I want, even online. (cont.)

The word screw comes from the Latin word “scrofa”, meaning sow or Pig. This is because the heads of early screws resembled a pig’s snout.

#Linguistics question! I have an older relative - who would have grown up in Nova Scotia in the late 1940s and through the 1950s. I don't know if it's a generational thing, or a #regionalism, or what, but he uses a term I've never heard anyone else use. Might be only one tiny area; little towns were pretty isolated back then.
#Screws - i.e. hardware you drive into #wood etc - he calls "#screwnails".
Anyone else ever hear them referred to this way?
