"In metric, one milliliter of water occupies one cubic centimeter, weighs one gram, and requires one calorie of energy to heat up by one degree centigrade—which is 1 percent of the difference between its freezing point and its boiling point. An amount of hydrogen weighing the same amount has exactly one mole of atoms in it. Whereas in the American system, the answer to ‘How much energy does it take to boil a room-temperature gallon of water?’ is ‘Go fuck yourself,’ because you can’t directly relate any of those quantities."

  2. I am envious of people in other countries that use the #metric system.

Here in the USA, we still use measurements of bananas, washing machines, religious chicken sauce packets, elephants, and so called "football" stadiums.

Consider yourself lucky that measurements can easily be quantized in units of ten for scientific and engineering scales and people know what the hell you are talking about.

  3. I ♥ the metric system. That is all. #metric

  4. My partner brought back some #sunscreen from a trip to #Greece. I was looking at the directions on it, and they're quite a bit different from what I'm used to on North American brands. They included this:

    > Apply at least 2 mg per cm^2 of skin.

My first thought was "You have GOT to be fucking with me."

  5. #Imperial vs. #Metric System 🛠️

This is what happens every time my partner and I plan a road trip, build furniture, shop for beverages and basically perform any activity that involves measurements.

  7. For the most part, I am a serious advocate for the US adopting SI units. I've traveled all over, lived abroad and dealing with meters and kilometers and so on was really not a problem.

However, I do like Fahrenheit for temperature -- Celsius makes scientific sense, but humans just don't deal with negative numbers well, and so many live in places where part of the year you have negative temperatures. With Fahrenheit, most of humanity could express every temperature they encounter with a positive 2-digit number.

  11. A 3/4 (55 cm) #violin 🎻 [1] for the American chap whose posts I saw on Reddit whilst researching what was involved in changing #sparkplugs - it turns out in USA-land torque values for these are sometimes quoted in *inch*-pounds, but he got confused and ended up borrowing a ft-lbs #torquewrench, tried to put put 150 ft-lbs (203 Nm!) on a plug that should be about 150 inch-pounds (17 Nm). and wondered why the plug was still loose, and his truck was misfiring.

Luckily for him the ceramic had broken before the threads stripped in the cylinder head and the garage was able to extract the broken plug and he was back on the road.

[1] just the right size for a small child of about age 10 to play, and to suggest to the old man that using #metric units really isn't a bad idea..
