I'm very uneasy about this 'FTA' - none of the other recently touted 'FTAs' is actually 'free trade' in any meaningful way. The secrecy around the terms is reprehensible. The fact that so many organisations were locked out of the process is unjustifiable. The fact that Stephen Jacobi supports it, and Todd MacLay and Phil Goff as well, makes me very suspicious. I think that our chief 'negotiator' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vangelis_Vitalis) woefully misled Ardern on #TPPA to get her support.

'New Zealand’s trade and agriculture minister, Todd McClay, notified the Canadian government and other countries in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) that New Zealand is triggering mandatory negotiations over the dairy dispute. https://www.realagriculture.com/2024/10/new-zealand-ramps-up-dairy-dispute-with-canada/
The world’s largest dairy-exporting country launched the dispute in 2022, arguing the Canada’s allocation of tariff rate quotas (TRQs) for dairy imports was not in line with the rules of the Pacific trade deal, with some of the access given to domestic companies.
Both countries’ governments claimed victory in a September 2023 arbitration panel decision, but New Zealand says Canada has since failed to comply with the ruling.
“Canada can end this dispute by meeting its CPTPP obligations to us. If they continue to choose not to, they owe us compensation,” says McClay.

I'll tell you why in this thread.

Just like, sadly, Labour about-faced on supporting the #TPPA immediately after gaining power, after having campaigned against it, just because they 'got assurances' from MFAT that, though it was of negligible value to NZ, it was benign. Ugh. It was of negligible positive value, yes, but it isn't benign. We need better leaders. And yes, Ardern was a breath of fresh air compared to Luxon et al.

@phil_stevens yup. I was horrified by the complicity of the NZ media & the utter non-engagement from all but a few politicians. I had a 1 hr discussion about it with my local MP (Nat'l's Nicky Wagner) who said "but Tim Groser's such a nice man & he said the #TPPA is good for NZ, so I'm voting for it". 🤦 Most MPs were similarly complicit. I told my subsequent MP, Duncan Webb, to his face, that if he voted for NZ to ratify the #CPTPPA, he was a traitor to NZers. I fully stand by that.

@Kay I should also note that the media (yes, RNZ, I'm talking to you!) were complicit in foisting the #TPPA/#CPTPPA upon us by refusing to question the 'FTA' label the gov't falsely applied to it.. and despite the fact Prof Jane Kelsey ran rings around every other pundit & gov't representative in factual disclosures & deep understanding of the implications of the 'agreement'. Both major parties should be totally humiliated for letting this happen on their watch. @norightturnnz @isaacfreeman
