This seemingly innocuous article - https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/497363/new-zealand-wins-trade-dispute-with-canada-over-dairy-access - about 'NZ' prevailing in an international trade dispute with Canada, under the terms of the #CPTPPA (aka the #TPPA with a bit of lipstick) would barely warrant a flared nostril or raised eyebrow from most readers, but is ringing some serious alarm bells for me. I'll tell you why in this thread.

For those unfamiliar with Stephen Jacobi - he was a breathless cheerleader (interviewed dozens of times in the NZ media) for the #TPPA & #CPTPPA. He is largely responsible, I think, for NZ squandering much of its sovereignty, handing it to foreign corporate interests: https://davelane.nz/tppa

@phil_stevens yup. I was horrified by the complicity of the NZ media & the utter non-engagement from all but a few politicians. I had a 1 hr discussion about it with my local MP (Nat'l's Nicky Wagner) who said "but Tim Groser's such a nice man & he said the #TPPA is good for NZ, so I'm voting for it". 🤦 Most MPs were similarly complicit. I told my subsequent MP, Duncan Webb, to his face, that if he voted for NZ to ratify the #CPTPPA, he was a traitor to NZers. I fully stand by that.

'“Please consider how crazy this system is,” Boyd told delegates from scores of nations attending the hearing. “States that are trying to tackle the climate and environmental crisis and safeguard the human rights of their people are being forced to pay billions of dollars in compensation to the very corporations that have caused this crisis. Instead of making polluters pay, states are paying polluters.”

We need sharper, principled policy makers.

CW: NZPol IT Procurement BuyLocal
@kaffiene of course the #ISDS terms in the #CPTPPA are only part of it - as you point out gov't procurement was horribly biased in favour of #BitTech prior to that, too. That's because bureaucrats want to be seen to be in charge of the biggest budgets/procurements ($ amount) possible as it sets them up for advancement. I've no doubt people create RFPs with conditions effectively ruling out viable local options, because the 'big name' & big $ looks better on their CV.

CW: #NZPol for voters in #Rotorua
If you're voting in Rotorua, remember that Todd McClay was National's booster for the #TPPA & #CPTPPA after Tim Groser scarpered. He was actively working against NZers' interests- details: https://davelane.nz/tppa (my Select Committee presentation). Similarly, Labour's David Parker is a traitor to NZers by cheerleading for this (not-at-all)#FreeTradeAgreement - that support demonstrates their incredibly poor judgement & that of their gormless parties for believing it.

To folks aware of the #TPPA & its less-pronouceable alias #CPTPPA that I regularly cite as a real problem for the world & us here in Aotearoa NZ - the #InvestorStateDisputeServices (#ISDS) terms of the not-at-all #FreeTradeAgreement our gov't has signed us up to... this will help you understand how bad it is: https://invidious.snopyta.org/watch?v=xW5dEtjMb-k or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW5dEtjMb-k #CorporateCoup @strypey @DrCuriosity This also explains our gov'ts *love* for #BigTech & snubbing domestic companies.
