  1. @paninid Examples such as yours are ones that I believe are productive and useful. Comparative history is important and insightful, when done right (which is why warnings from the Founders are so important). I've been seeing a lot more *248 years is really close to 250* #discourse which is based on Glubb's #pseudohistory which distracts from the rich comparisons of #Catiline and #Caesar

  2. I’ve noticed over the years that some experts kind of get off on quashing misconceptions about the past in a way that disappoints the person they’re talking to. I suspect that this is a contributing factor to the popularity of #pseudohistory.

I have had more success with the “the truth is even stranger!” approach.

  3. The Dendera lamp is a claim by some conspiracy theorists and "alternate" history nuts that reliefs in the temple of Dendera in #Egypt "prove" that the Ancient Egyptians harnessed electricity and used it for lighting.

The name "Dendera lamp" is named after the fringe theories; the name wasn't chosen because there's any actual lamp. There isn't.

#pseudohistoria #pseudohistory

  5. #Crank magnetism is the condition where people become attracted to multiple crank ideas at the same time. Crank magnetism also denotes the tendency — even for otherwise "lone issue" cranks — to accumulate more crank beliefs over time. You know that old saying about not being so open-minded that your brain falls out? People with crank magnetism didn't pay attention to that. Crank magnetism is an important stepping stone on the path towards being wrong all of the time. Its opposite is the stopped clock (which is when otherwise overly credulous people actually find some crankery that they won't believe in, and may even actively denounce it).

  6. British Israelism is a variant of #fundamentalist #Christian theology based on #pseudoarchaeology. In general it claims the lost tribes of Israel migrated to the British Isles and were the ancestors of today's White British people. It was a popular theory in the early 20th century, at least in the U.K. where it served as a theological pseudo-justification for the British Empire. It fell out of favour because the evidence for it is completely lacking.

  7. How a Calendar Exposed the Falling Standards of an IIT

Relying on a baffling mixture of symbols and images, the 2024 calendar claiming to be published by IIT-Kharagpur wrongly propagates that Vedic Aryans were indigenous to the Indus Valley region, and supports 'out-of-India' migration against all evidence. C.P. Rajendran writes.

  8. Laura Knight-Jadczyk is an American pseudohistorian and unified conspiracy theorist, but perhaps mainly known for her channeling of the "Cassiopaeans" and the fake news platform Sott.net. A self-styled "scientific mystic and PaleoChristian Shaman," PaleoChristianity is the little organized religion she had founded as her personal cult. Her websites and ventures in alternative media publishing and other things have branched out over the years of her Cassiopaean channeling and inspired research, but her audience remains much smaller than for example that of David Icke. Since 2003 she has lived in France together with part of her inner circle.

"The latest anti-Semitic diatribe by the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, had initially gone unnoticed but emerged on September 6 to great disapproval. On August 24.. outlined a history of the Jewish people, their origins and their persecution in Europe. He went on to deny that the anti-Semitism of the Nazi regime led to the Holocaust during the Second World War".

  10. Hindutva Profiles: Sarah L Gates

Gates 'justifies' the discriminatory caste system in the Hindu religion by labeling the scourge as a British innovation aimed at defaming Hinduism. Gates regularly indulges in fear-mongering among Hindus and openly exhorts them to ‘step up and fight back’ against the supposed Hinduphobia.

  11. Hindutva Profiles: Vikram Sampat

Sampat is considered by the Hindu far-right as someone who is putting forth an accurate ‘indic version’ of India’s past. Sampat is invited to platforms that eulogize Hindu supremacy and propagate the idea of exclusive Hindu polity (Hindu Rashtra), like The Sangam Talks, The Jaipur Dialogues, and others.

A team of #DeSantis ideological clones unanimously approved the standards, including William Barclay Allen.

  13. @Lazarou

    Currently i'm on a mission to #FactCheck #pseudoScience and #PseudoHistory in #CommunityNotes

There's a risk of a backfire effect? But the people saying the horrible things are not really the target audience, it's the middle ground who need to see those ideas are not widely accepted.

Maybe the backfire effect can even be a win? If the #transphobes
and #antivaxxers get so annoyed at being corrected that they crawl back into a dark corner of the internet, that's the best outcome?

  14. YouTuber #RebalD has some important points about the #Netflix "documentary" #QueenCleopatra I can agree with: youtu.be/jwv_cIm2RRY
Two of his points were not clear to me until now:
    1. Since #Cleopatra belonged to a dynasty of #Macedonian-#Greek origin, she was not only not Black, but also a quasi-#colonial ruler.
    2. Because Egyptian history is reinterpreted by outsiders in a way that denies contemporary Egyptians part of their identity, it is #CulturalAppropriation.

  15. The idea that the #Joseph of the Old Testament was #Imhotep is a mixture of the usual "Biblical history" pseudo-historical distortion, with a bit of crossover appeal to the lunatic fringe "Alternative" #Egyptology nuts. It's a kind of anti-intellectual, anti-historical supermarket, with something for everyone.

Jason Colavito has traced the historiography of the connection between #pyramids and Joseph's grain silos to the late antiquity and early medieval writers Julius Honorius and Gregory of Tours. Honorius' Cosmographia, probably written in the 4th or 5th century CE, specifically mentioned that the pyramids were Joseph's granaries, whereas Gregory's 6th century History of the Franks alluded to the same idea, but without using the word "pyramid".

  16. Gurjar queens, Vokkaliga warriors: How BJP is inventing history for a new Hindutva caste politics

Historians suggest that the heroes the BJP is invoking to allegedly attract castes either do not exist or their role is being exaggerated.

  17. BJP propagates fiction as history: 'Uri and Nanje Gowda killed Tipu Sultan'

Historians have long believed that Tipu was killed by the British during the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1798-99. They call the BJP’s new version a sinister design.

  18. Step Back's @TristanPEJ is one of my most favourite creators on Youtube & Nebula. He's a man with a mission I wholeheartedly support.

If you're curious about The Discourse™ surrounding Netflix's 'Ancient Apocalypse', let Tristan explain. & no, you don't need to watch the "documentary" series. Probably best you don't. Start here: youtu.be/bFKRnnqNBzo
