So here's a topic that's been on my mind recently...
A prominent professor in my area made a viral post about how he'd finally reached a position of job security where he wouldn't have to worry about retaliatory discrimination to the point where he felt comfortable to reveal his caste:

for me, what kinda messes me up about this, is that from what I can piece together, I'm ostensibly in the same group? OBC? and the thing is, like I have no fucking clue about this weird shitty system at all -- heck I had refused to even ask what my own might be, until a few years ago following some choice wikipedia-ing of some terms my grandmother was using.
it kinda fucks me up to know that I might be discriminated on by this weird shitty system that I don't know anything about (not on speaking terms with my family anymore, but from what I can piece together it kinda makes sense that they didn't ever mention or bring up caste growing up).
I've had some indians (privileged singaporean indians mind you) tell me it's not a big thing, but like hearing experiences like above, or from ppl I spoke to in india, it feels like this classification really hangs over them and has real consequences.
I don't feel uncomfortable revealing my own, but tbh it feels a little like stolen valour? I've been privileged of growing up in the UK and I guess a rare positive of being one of the only non-white kids growing up is that it's never been a concern or something that even came up for me. so it doesn't hold a big stigma to me, which seems like really big privilege. I don't even feel comfortable owning the classification as the professor did above, because like I didn't grow up with a large enough indian community to the point that I could even have ever been discriminated on such grounds, so do I even count?
what worries me is hearing how caste discrimination is being perpetuated by non-resident indians? idk by nature of my upbringing, I am fundamentally not indian, my culture is western, I see the world mostly the way you'd expect a white brit to see it, that is where I call my home. It's kinda weird realising that not everyone who might have shared similar upbringing might not be as distanced from the caste system as I am -- to me it's some weird bigoted shitty outdated system as superficial and arbitrary as something like horoscopes (albeit magnitudes more bigoted and dangerous) -- it's hard enough growing up as a minority, it's kinda fucked to realise that this means I've gotta be on guard against other diaspora bcs they might be carrying this around and happy to perpetuate it.
it really just messes my mind up thinking about how I might be discriminated upon on this system that I have no idea about, but am somehow going to be placed upon without my choice.
