  6. @prau I'm not sure why you're insinuating #capitalism is what allows for #freespeech. These are two separate entities and complement each other well.

Reading the #socialist playbook, they were very big on banning the topic of capitalism so its ideas couldn't infest their society and corrupt it.

I say this not knowing what #RationalWiki is up to. Making statements like deduction isn't important to science or that it is somehow a substitute for data.

  7. Anti-#RationalWiki (var., AbsurdoWiki) uses the hashtag #freespeech to defend itself against those who don't like its bold lies. But yes, #capitalism allows such "nutty" liars to spread their nonsense.

  8. Fighting the AI scraper bots at Pivot to AI and RationalWiki

We’ve covered the AI scraper bots before. These just hit web pages over and over, at high speed, to scrape new training data for LLMs. They’re an absolute plague across the whole World Wide Web and a pain in the backside for the sysadmins running the servers. 14. William Albert Dembski is an American who is one of the main pushers of the pseudoscience of intelligent design, specifically his unfalsifiable concept of "specified complexity".

Unusually for a creationist, he does in fact have some actual credentials: a Ph.D in mathematics from the University of Chicago, a Ph.D in philosophy from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a Masters of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary. Now, if only one of those fine institutions recognized Intelligent Design as being anything but an absolute hodgepodge of nonsense, he'd be set.

Thus, despite having been educated at real universities, he "lectures" and "does research" at institutions that are at the very deep end of overtly faith-driven #pseudoscience.

  16. Crown Sterling is a crank company that exists at the intersection of pseudoscience (numerology, Pythagoreanism, snake oil cryptography), and New Age occultism (including, but not limited to, pyramidology). It is a subsidiary of Strathspey Crown, both of which were founded by Robert Edward Grant.

The company has presented several fraudulent claims about being able to break cryptographic algorithms, and peddled cryptographic snake oil products such as a cryptocurrency and a messaging app.

The beginnings of Crown Sterling revolve around the 24-sector dartboard of quasi-primes, that the company's CEO, Robert Edward Grant, has been rehashing ever since he uploaded his PDF "Prime Number Pattern Associated with Icositetragons" online on June 6, 2018.

  21. The Creation "Museum" is a $27 million amusement park located in Petersburg, Kentucky, USA just a few miles from Cincinnati, near the Kentucky-Indiana-Ohio tripoint, which should tell you all you need to know. Ken Ham, president of Answers in Genesis (AIG) founded it and it is devoted to the young earth creationist idea that "The Bible is true from Genesis to Revelation!" — that is, in complete opposition to the scientific consensus and basic logic.

The unaccredited museum promotes the idea that "the Bible is the history book of the universe". This is somehow supposed to be in line with their idea that "facts don't speak for themselves" and that the Bible contains the "correct" way to interpret any and all evidence available in the physical world. …

  22. Crank magnetism is the condition where people become attracted to multiple crank ideas at the same time. Crank magnetism also denotes the tendency — even for otherwise "lone issue" cranks — to accumulate more crank beliefs over time. You know that old saying about not being so open-minded that your brain falls out? People with crank magnetism didn't pay attention to that. Crank magnetism is an important stepping stone on the path towards being wrong all of the time. Its opposite is the stopped clock (which is when otherwise overly credulous people actually find some crankery that they won't believe in, and may even actively denounce it).

  23. #LessWrong is a community blog focused on "refining the art of human #rationality." To this end, it focuses on identifying and overcoming bias, improving judgment and problem-solving, and speculating about the future. The blog is based on the ideas of Eliezer Yudkowsky, a research fellow for the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI; previously known as the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and then the Singularity Institute). Many members of LessWrong share Yudkowsky's interests in #transhumanism, artificial intelligence (AI), the #Singularity, and #ai

  25. #Deepity is a term employed by Daniel Dennett in his 2009 speech to the American Atheists conference, coined by the teenage daughter of one of his friends. The term refers to a statement that is apparently profound but actually asserts a triviality on one level and something meaningless on another. Generally, a deepity has (at least) two meanings: one that is true but trivial, and another that sounds profound, but is essentially false or meaningless and would be "earth-shattering" if true. To the extent that it's true, it doesn't have to matter. To the extent that it has to matter, it isn't true (if it actually means anything). This second meaning has also been called "pseudo-profound bullshit".

I took classical piano for fifteen fucking years, theory, composition, the whole thing, and I'm getting so fucking tired of people saying, 'Oh, it's a rock 'n' roll guy fucking around with electronic music.' That's bullshit. One of these days I'm gonna pull my degrees out and say, 'Does that make me legitimate?' But I don't wanna do that because that's horseshit too."—Lou Reed

#Credentialism is excessive reliance on credentials, especially academic degrees. The term originally was applied to over-reliance on credentials in hiring, but its use has broadened.

Credentials are third-party acknowledgments that the holder possesses the requisite knowledge and clearance relating to a specific field of knowledge. Most are educational in nature, usually a diploma indicating the completion of a specific course of study.

  39. The Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, often simply referred to as the Battle Flag, infrequently as the Southern Cross, or (incorrectly) as the #Confederate #flag, was a flag flown by the forces of (who else?) the Confederate States of America's Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War. It was later used to represent all of the #Confederate forces, starting with its adoption as the symbol of the United Confederate Veterans. From there, it became recognized as a symbol of the Confederacy in general, and later the South, yet more generally. Today, the flag is popular with southerners and non-southerners alike, who claim the flag represents their "heritage" and doesn't have any racist connotations at all. It is also popular with admitted racists, white supremacists, and alt-righters, who don't even try to deny its racist connotations.

  40. Colloidal silver is a suspension of microscopic particles of silver, usually in water, that has gained an undeserved reputation as a cure-all with claims that it is a natural broad-spectrum antibiotic, antifungal, & antiviral agent, & as a nonspecific "immune system booster". There are also claims that it is able to treat serious diseases such as AIDS, Lyme, etc.— which are all groundless woo. Colloidal silver is used topically by applying with a dropper to the skin (for example, as an antiseptic on cuts), or taken internally. There is no empirical evidence that it is effective at all when taken internally for anything except making you look like a Smurf. The US CFR prohibits vendors from claiming any health benefit from colloidal silver or silver salt-based products. The medical consensus is that colloidal silver, despite being readily available as a "health supplement", is dangerous & provides no health benefits.

  41. Cold fusion, also called Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR) or Chemically-Assisted Nuclear Reactions (CANR) by its proponents, is the claim of nuclear reactions at relatively low temperatures, rather than at millions of degrees. The most commonly-touted system where cold fusion is supposed to occur is an electrolytic cell with a palladium cathode that is electrolyzing deuterium oxide (a.k.a. heavy water, 2H2O or D2O)), but most recent claims about energy production involve nickel and ordinary hydrogen.

  42. In biology, #cladistics is a taxonomical technique for arranging organisms according to how they branch in the evolutionary tree of life.

A group of organisms is analysed and classified into a tree-like diagram called a cladogram, showing hypothesised lines of descent. The analysis may use morphological similarity, but most often DNA differences and biochemical data.

Cladistics has all but taken over from the older Linnaean taxonomy, which originated before the theories of #evolution and common descent.

Cladistic techniques do not assume any particular theory of evolution, only the concept of descent with modification. As such, cladistic methods are usefully applied to non-biological systems, including historical linguistics and textual criticism. Even #creationism had to create its own version of cladistics, called baraminology.

  43. Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture is a monthly magazine published by the Rockford Institute, a #paleoconservative think tank. Established in 1976, it stands as the premier periodical for erudite, highly-educated racists.

If the American far right is defined by how white, male, affluent, and out-of-touch it is, then contributors to #Chronicles are the whitest, most affluent, and most out-of-touch men there are. To their credit, they do part ways from movement conservatism by opposing big business and interventionist foreign policies. Unfortunately, even opposing big business and interventionism leaves plenty of inhumane ideas for the magazine to support; Chronicles deals in the worst of the right: #racism, #sexism, and Christianism.

  44. #Chelation therapy is either 1) a legitimate medical treatment for diagnosed heavy metal poisoning, or 2) a pseudoscientific practice whereby certain substances (usually #EDTA or deferoxamine) are administered to a patient to "clear them of toxins".

In chemistry, "coordination" is the formation of a relatively weak bond between a metal ion and another substance called a "ligand" to form a "coordination complex". "Chelation" is a type of coordination where the ligand has multiple sites ("teeth") with which to bind to the metal, which makes the complex significantly more stable. A commonly encountered chelating agent is citric acid, which is a useful rust remover owing to its ability to chelate to iron. Chelation therapy is medically useful in heavy metal poisoning when the coordination complex is less toxic or more easily eliminated than the metal itself. …

  45. Mike Cernovich, also known as "Weird Mike" or "Juicebro", is an alt-right talker with a plethora of stupid views. He has two main gigs: promoting conspiracy theories and whining about "weak" liberals. Before he became famous, Cernovich was a First Amendment lawyer who spent his time promoting MRA / internet tough guy views. Cernovich said many, many crazy things about women, rape, and transgender people which he has since attempted to delete. Fortunately, we've archived all of his often-sexually-explicit insanity for your viewing displeasure. Not surprisingly, Cernovich was an early member of the Proud Boys.

Since then, Cernovich has become famous for promoting conspiracy theories, often working with Alex Jones or Paul Joseph Watson. Ironically, Cernovich's lifestyle is only possible because he's supported by alimony from his rich ex-wife. How's that for an alpha male?
