A #Pastiche in Time: Algernon Blackwood Part 2 of 2
#FanFic #AlgernonBlackwood
#Wss366 Ace / Baron von Richthofen / Red Baron #TimeTravelAuthors FixingThe doctor nodded encouragingly.
“It was when I returned it happened. I own a book containing rare and previously unpublished letters by Hemingway. To my astonishment, there was one from his time during the Spanish Civil War. In it, he perfectly described me and my prediction. Nothing has been the same since. The experiences grow ever longer, and I have increasing trouble waking. It’s not as if I can avoid them. A billboard can set it off or the blurb on a food package. On one occasion, Baron von Richthofen, a World War I #Ace, almost shot me as a spy. That was due to a serial box. Another time, a billboard for rum dumped me on a sugar plantation in Puerto Rico, and I was mistaken for a worker. The conditions were terrible. The sugar company treated the workers like slaves.”
“I am terrified every time it happens,” I said.
He nodded again, “Yes, that would be awful.”
I showed him my copy of “Three John Silence Stories” and said, “You have to help me; it’s happening again.”

A #Pastiche in Time: Algernon Blackwood Part 1 of 2
#FanFic #AlgernonBlackwood
#Wss366 Brief / Hemingway's birthday #TimeTravelAuthors Fixing“Doctor Silence, it is the most disconcerting feeling. I can no longer read. If I pick up a book, I soon enter a fugue state and am transported to that time and place.”
I was seated in a room painted a calming green. A servant had provided me with a chair that was inexplicably nailed to the floor. The doctor sat across from me listening intently.
If I had to describe him, I would first say he matched his name. He gave off a quiet air of calm, despite an eerie aura. His whole manner left you convinced he was both incalculably benevolent and knowledgeable. As for his dress, he wore a tasteful plum smoking jacket, for I had arrived at his consult in the early evening, far past normal visiting hours.
“Go on,” he said. “How did it start?”
“The first time it happened, I was reading ‘Time Machine’ by H.G. Wells. I was nearing the end when I had the most realistic dream that I was walking under a dim sun by the sea. On the beach were alien, muddy-brown crabs of enormous size. The experience was quite #brief, and I awoke presently.”
“Only it wasn’t a dream, was it?” the doctor said.
I relaxed; he understood. I knew there was an alternate chamber with padded walls for delusional visitors. That they hadn’t taken me to it should have been reassuring, but it was good to see tangible evidence that Dr. Silence accepted my bizarre story.
“No, but I didn’t know it. It seemed too fantastic to think I was actually traveling to those times and places.”
Forgetting the chair was immobile, I attempted to scoot closer to my audience. After a nervous laugh, I continued. “I had several more experiences of this nature: a visit to the Khyber Pass; Paris during the French Revolution; and a 1920s speakeasy. I rather enjoyed the dreams. They were so vivid and realistic, each longer than the last. I felt quite safe, since if anything bad happens, I’ll wake up, which is something I can generally force myself to do.”
“When did you realize?” Silent asked.
“I was reading #Hemingway’s ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ and found myself in a crowded Spanish tavern. There was a fellow American there, and I offered to buy him a drink. We fell to talking, him about being a war correspondent. I was excited to actually be talking to a famous author and, well, one thing led to another, and I told him I was from the future and that the Republicans would lose the war. He laughed. I don’t think he believed me.”

"There is another dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as warm as a sunbeam, and softer than a cloud. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and magic, and it lies between the refrigerator and the couch. This is the dimension of fur, whiskers, ears, and claws. It is an area which we call The Catgirl Zone."(With apologies to Rob Serling, of course.)

Bash & Pop - Friday Night is Killing Me
Chris Mars may have released the best post-Mats album, but Tommy Stinson did the second best as Bash & Pop.
Stinson (who switched to guitar) and crew are kind of doing their best 70s Stones (or maybe Faces) pastiche, and I'm here for it.
Bash & Pop looked like a 1993 one-off, but he brought them back in 2017...

Minashi-by-the-Sea (What the Iron-Gray Catkin Saw)
Conclution
Kurotsuki Kaibyō awoke the next morning to the sounds of bamboo flutes and lime wood lyres out in the street. Inside the inn, the whining of merchants denied their morning meal could be heard, for its iron-gray owner had already taken a berth on a ship bound for fair hills #unblighted by Kurosuki’s shadow, and the new owner was nowhere to be seen.
Restlessly, the Stealer of Dreams walked the streets. The smells of roasted lamb skewers, chestnuts fresh from the coals, and overflowing drinks of rum, redolent with the scent of lime, cinnamon, and cloves held no appeal for her, for she had heard Nyarlathotep’s piping and it haunted her like nothing had before.
Still, when the people paraded out of the city to frolic in the orchards on the hills, she made her way to the High Citadel. After casting wary glances to see if anyone was watching, she climbed the walls in a spot sheltered from the Toads of Lang’s view. Then, on silent feet, she jumped to the courtyard and swiftly blended into the shadows of the citadel itself.
It took only moments to slip through the moldering gate that none had dared to maintain in centuries.
What happened then no one knows. But the obscene piping that night grew louder, drowning out the bright bells and lutes of the celebration. The iron-gray catkin whose name might mean “She Who Fled a Doom That Did Not Come” reported seeing something drifting amid the lime blossoms festooning the waters of the harbor. Something that should not have been there. What is known is that Kurotsuki Kaibyō, the Stealer of Dreams, was no longer seen walking on silent feet amid the shadows of doomed dreamers.

"#Fisher’s frustration with this #lackofthenew led to the development of what has become his most famous (and, arguably, most controversial) cultural critique: #hauntology. Through his work on this topic, written in blogospheric collaboration with the music critic Simon Reynolds, Fisher described how the potential futures we once looked forward to — in our fictions, our music and our politics — have repeatedly failed to materialise and, in their place, we have a culture defined by repetitive cycles of retrospection and #pastiche."

Minashi-by-the-Sea (The Piping that Spoke of Nyarlathotep)
#Wss366 #MastoPrompt #MicroPrompt 9/7 -11
As the moon touched the hazy rim of the ocean, the Cat Who Stole Dreams indulged in one last #meal of the inn’s famed curried prawns, a #mash of almonds and sweet cream, and #distilled lime blossom liqueur. It was just a sip, enough to fend off the night's chill, no more.
Then, as the full dark of night blanketed Minashi-by-the-Sea, she donned her black, dew-spangled cape and her quietest #slippers and went out into the #late night. All was still except for the laughter of the fountains. The chorus of cicadas and revelers had long fallen silent. Not even the few unfortunates stirred by dreams of dark things said to slither from Hypnos Nor Slid’s House heard the soft footsteps of Kurotsuki.
With catlike grace, she climbed the outer walls of the High Citadel of Perpetual Petals. So lithe was her ascent that not a single petal of the trees that ringed that lofty place was disturbed, and thus the #wards that are triggered by their fall remained silent. The silent monitors, without the walls, perhaps saw a shadow flicker, but nothing more.
Thus, Kurotsuki Kaibyō reached a vantage from which she could observe the Toads of Leng cavorting and hear the fateful shrilling of the piping within the tower. The #luminous toads as they danced #round the tower #instilled no fear in her heart, yet a #current of dread set her fur to bristle, hearing the piping that spoke of Nyarlathotep, for it came from far beyond the ken of man.
Woe betide the mortal who, in a dream or drugged state, passes through the portals to that eldritch creature’s dimension. Better to face the nightgaunts or to be torn asunder by the ghouls of Pickman’s ilk than to glimpse the dwellers of that realm.
Shaken but undeterred, the queen of thieves came away that night ready to plunder the heart of Minashi-by-the-Sea.

Minashi-by-the-Sea (The Toad-Things of Leng)
#Wss366 #MastoPrompt 9/4 #MicroPrompt 8/27-29
Kurotsuki Kaibyō #yawned over her cup of strong Celedawn tea. The rich scent of #cardamom and cloves tickled her nose. She would need its invigorating properties, for she had a long night ahead of her and an even longer day.
Soon the moon would set, and it would be time to be about her business. Tomorrow would be the Festival of Lime Blossoms on the Water, and all the people of Minashi-by-the-Sea would be celebrating.
Except for the guards of the High Citadel of Perpetual Petals. The #Toads of Leng cared not for blossoms, scents, or even festivals. Their only loves were the repellent offal they were fed and dancing to the thin, insidious piping that emerged from the lofty tower on moonless nights.
Tonight, on cat feet, she would locate where the #Toad-things of Leng performed their hideous, obscene midnight capers. She would not be one of their flayed, #skinned victims that appeared floating in the harbor as dawn broke upon its lime blossom flotilla. And then tomorrow, when the #Toads were at their sleepiest and the citizens of Minashi-by-the-Sea frolicked amid the lime blossoms, she would #zip into the tower and be gone before anyone knew of her pilfering.

Minashi-by-the-Sea (Kurotsuki Kaibyō 黒月怪猫 )
#Wss366 #MastoPrompt #MicroPrompt
It is said that cats and their kin walk in #forgotten places. One such was Kurotsuki Kaibyō, the dream-stealer. But what can we say of her: dusk gray, midnight black, amber dawn, tawny day; silent as the wind; Buddha still; a voice of mirth or stiletto-steeled death? Who can tell, for none still inhabit Far Karabash, High Mirrus, or Xanadu? They are but whispered tales and empty, dusty streets.
Some proclaim she came from Atlantis, but the fish do not tell, and others say she hails from ----, whose name is #forgotten, along with its plazas and palaces.
The #harbor #drew Kurotsuki-chan with smells of tar; fresh seabream; mussels and shrimp stewed in a thick, sweet sauce, while the singsong of the polyglot people who thronged its byways soothed her ears, and the old sailors, easy prey for such as she, willingly sold their tales and dreams for a drink."
She stopped at a #harbor inn, run by a sly, iron-gray catkin with a name all hisses and nyas. Some said it meant “She who Provides Fresh Fish and Warm Beds.” Others said it was the same as her establishment, “Cat Haven.” Those who stayed there said various things and generally muddled the answer with amusing nonsense.
As Kurotsuki-chan entered, a whisper went round, and those who were wise hastened to secure a berth in some merchantman, outward bound for lands of heather mist, or, if desperation and despair drove them, for the fjord-bound ports of the cold north.

Minashi-by-the-Sea (Greetings)
#Wss366 #MastoPrompt #MicroPrompt 8/18
The caravan descended the hills of Neither Lang with hurried steps toward fabled Minashi-by-the-Sea, passing through plum and sakura trees in eternal bloom.
No guards greeted them, for none dared invade. The bones of three times three armies lay bleaching on Neither Lang’s slopes, and none knew what dread curse had felled them.
Instead, crickets in bamboo cages and bush warblers perched on open fretted enclosures serenaded them as they #filed through ivory gates. Then, the merchants lining the streets sang out their wares: salt-cured #limes, cocoa #nibs, flower petal silks, and food—sakura mochi, citrus tuna, roasted lime-slaked corn, and chiled sprats.
The travelers hurried to cedar-shaded inns, famous for eel stews redolent with rosemary and pickled limes. With their camels stabled and wares piled high for sale the next day, they sought beds with fine linen sheets sprinkled with lime blossoms.
Thus, Kurotsuki Kaibyō, the dream-stealing catkin, came to Minashi-by-the-Sea.

Minashi-by-the-Sea
#MicroPrompt #MastoPrompt 8/16
The moon rose above #slumbering Minashi-by-the-Sea. Its #cream walls glowed faintly in the light. Unbidden, the caravan camels stepped faster, setting their harness bells to chime. The drivers laughed at libelous jokes or prayed to their small gods. The moon that had threatened to vanish now waxed strong.
Forgotten was Far Karabash, its walls decaying in the gloom. No caravans, jars of aromatic spices, or bolts of fabulous silks would enter its gates. The crystal fountains of Minashi-by-the-Sea ceased murmuring a dirge for its passing. Instead, the waters celebrated the new dreamer, who built rose-tinted towers and #creamy sand beaches.

To a Forgotten Dreamer II
#Wss366 (For the new word) #MastoPrompt 8/12
The caravan #halted above Far Karabash.
From Neither Lang’s once verdant hills, they saw the twisted streets of its bazaar.
The camels spat at not having arrived yet and longed for the cooling waters of Minashi-by-the-Sea.
Their drivers silently signed themselves against evil and glanced at the waning stars above. The moon grew dimmer by the hour.
From where they were, they couldn’t see the dust devils dance in Karabash’s haunted streets.
The city’s fireworks no longer bloomed in the even dusk. Its crystal #fruit had ceased singing.
Far Karabash’s dreamer no longer dreamed but slept forever in hushed darkness.

#TimeManager Part 26
#wss366 #TimeTravelAuthors 07/17Light broke through the cloud cover and rain as they left the croft. Poe was the first to react. “Gorgeous. The colors are like Evangeline’s smile.”
TM spoke next, “Tis a bonny sight.”
Looking out over the moor, they saw a thrice-arched rainbow, its colors crisp as a midwinter frost. And as if coming through a divine gate, a flock of polled sheep walked under its arch, attended by shepherds in sunshine yellow mackintoshes and dancing dogs.
“Amazing. Truly remarkable,” Holmes said.
“Of all God’s creations, the rainbow is among the most wondrous,” said Watson, “but I never expected to hear you marvel at one.”
“The refraction of light through water droplets is scientifically interesting,” Holmes replied, “and while rare triple arches are not unheard of. But that’s not what I meant. Look there, note the shepherd in the well-worn light-green slouch hat. Oxford man. Theology, if I’m not mistaken. Dropped out in his third year to marry a local girl he met on holiday. A truly unexpected sight on Dartmoor.”

Watson looked pointedly at us. “What about them?”
“Yeah, what about us?” Raven said.
“Totally irrelevant. They’re innocent bystanders.”
“Bystanders, but hardly innocent. Crackky Crak cacacacaw,” Raven cackled at its own joke.
“I’d like to tag along,” Poe said, speaking up.
“Just don’t get in the way,” Sherlock said, turning and leaving the croft.
“If you’re after the #bounty, it goes to the widow,” Watson added.
“Come, Watson. Time is wasting. They’re time travelers and have no use for English pounds.”

#wss366 #TimeTravelAuthors 07/05
“That’s Sherlock Holmes,” Raven said in a stage whisper.
“Do tell,” muttered Poe, dryly.
Raven stretched, smoothing her feathers. “Autograph, please, Mr. Holmes?”
Watson blinked, his eyes as round as TM’s. Holmes regarded her, faintly amused. “Remarkable. A talking raven. American, by the timbre. Bright, yet prone to absurdity.”
“The criminal,” Watson prompted, redirecting anxiously.
“Disguised as a gentleman, officer, constable, or valet; yet unmistakably of inferior stock.”
“How #can you be sure?”
“The blacking tin. Smears on the chair betray a clumsy hand. One polishes with precision or not at all. The details, Watson; details always betray the breeding.”
