  1. (Check this poem on italianpoetry.it/poems/alla-se for help with the translation, listening to the reading out loud, and some more notes to the most difficult words.)

Here is a beautiful classic that I hardly can stand anymore, having been force fed it innumerable times in school and in all sorts of anthologies.

Evening is the image of death, the eternal quiet and nothingness that promises peace.

  2. Not sure what the very best way to start a year might be, but one can’t go wrong starting with a smile.

So let me wish everyone an excellent 2025 using the same verses that our friend Lazzarelli employed to wish a great 1683 to his nemesis, Don Ciccio: may all the planets bring you joy, bless you and conserve you!

Well... all verses, except the last one :)

  3. Christmas happens every year, even when we are at war. This poem by Ungaretti is introduced by the indication "Napoli il 26 dicembre 1916": he was on temporary leave from the front of WW1, and visiting his friend's house in Naples.

  4. In this sonnet, Leon Battista Alberti explores the mismatch between human desire and things as they turn out, and in particular the frustrating effect of wanting something *too much*, and for that reason, losing it. As he pithily puts it in the last verse, *troppo voler mal corrisponde*: "too much willing is a bad match."

  5. Two young lovers are looking for a place where they can "make one life out of two." All the afternoon they wander around under the sun, surrounded by the noise and the comings and goings of adult, everyday life.

  8. Michelangelo is known mostly for art you can see with your eyes, but he also catered to ears. This is a love sonnet to Vittoria Colonna, from his Canzoniere.

  9. CW: small press and publishing mini-rant

I loathe the fact that tooting my poetry makes it ineligible for publication in most litmags.

  10. An ode to the awakening of desire. And a warning that it might not end up being what you were hoping for.

  14. Some Dante was long overdue. This is not stuff for a beginner, or even intermediate learner, I'd say, but it is such a staple that I had to do it italianpoetry.it/poems/paolo-e .

I followed the tradition of calling the episode "Paolo e Francesca", even if Paolo never speaks and we aren't even told his name. That's centuries of male tradition for you :)

  15. #poetrycafe March 22: Show us the last poem you read!

This is from Dionne Brand's collection, Inventory (McClelland&Stewart, 2006) that i just finished, it's the last page of a book that is still so sadly relevant in this world of violence.

  18. My house is always cracking at night. When I was a child, my dad would tell me "don't worry my dear, it's the wood breathing. The house is relaxing".
    I'm a grown-up now but, drifting away to its familiar wooden lullaby, I still wonder how many lives are sung that I don't know of. #writing #writerscoffeeclub #writingcommunity #text #childhood #poetry #poem #poems #poemsonmastodon #poetrycommunity #poetrycafe #poetrycorner #poetsofmastodon #shortstory #dailylife #storiesofmastodon #poetic

  19. There were no more step to take
She wished she had thought about it sooner
She would have taken more, she thought
There were no last breath to take
That one seemed to surprise the reaper more
Should she tell her she hid it
In one of her goodbye kiss
    Would she take that soul?

  22. @nona80_swanette

About my philosophical haikus, most of them don't have a discernible character, and they don't need one. Though they often reference particular philosophers, they focus on thoughts instead of the thinkers themselves. Alternatively, and considering there is no thought without a thinker, this can be interpreted as the reader being a sort of “character”, which I think mixes well with the meditative aspect that haiku tends to have.

  23. This poem was inspired by the Christina Rossetti poem “The Convent Threshold” and I encourage you to read that poem if you haven’t already and then mine.

    The Plight of Christina's Woman
    ©️ Nona Rose 2011

Can you see the stairs before me,
    Leading up to solemn stars
Clothed in midnight, coal, oily black
And staring back with that conviction
That's eating into my heart and soul
As only those pious and lofty ones can

Am I treading these boards alone,
My love, my darling, lovely, cherished love,
Whose arms enclose me as I sleep
And when I wake, take me in such tender embrace
That angels blush when they catch sight
And turn their heads for holy shame?

But first, look at Cafe Orient and their salted caramel latte with me!

  25. Rising Up
    ©️ Nona Rose 2011

    Pretty pictures on the wall
Stare down at me in mute anticipation
They've been waiting for so long
It won't hurt to wait some more
There's no life in this room
The curtain's faded and carpet's worn
    The wardrobe needs a paint
And there's no air to breathe
Someone shut the door long ago
    Maybe it was me
    And society is stuck outside

  26. Sitting down with a coffee.
    Wearing a pretty dress.
Writing down a thought that has been around in my head forever.
Writing it for hours, in different shades and and forms, until it feels right.

That's what I do at my favourite coffee place every Wednesday to write #Poetry.

    How about you?
