Self-promo time! What creations and links do you wish to release to the great outdoors of Mastodon? #Writephant

I've no literary work currently out, except excerpts on Mastodon at the moment (search: from:sfwrtr excerpt). However, as you can see by my photos this week, I am a photographer. I have a site which I'm not going to cite because I've been doing so much writing I've not been maintaining it.

Silly me will take photos of most anything artsy and photogenic. This is from my wigglegram project. #photo #photography

  7. #Writephant A3. Some literary classics show protagonist adapting well to nature, like Robinson Crusoe or My Side of the Mountain. Others show the survival becoming horrific, like in Lord of the Flies or Hatchet. Which side of the adaptability spectrum do you prefer?

Adapting well, even if it's an inhospitable land (like Mars)

  9. #Writephant A2. What books featuring nature or the great outdoors come to mind? And yes, they can include extremely inaccurate ones.

I'm currently reading a book I haven't read since I was I teen, Mary Stewart's The Moonspinners... I didn't notice this back then, but now I appreciate the vividness of her descriptions of the island of Crete... The flowers, the scents, the heat, the sea. Amazing.

  11. #Writephant A1. Do you like spending time outdoors in nature? Why or why not?

I do (except if it's very humid and buggy). Gardens, beaches, a hike through the woods, I like them all.

#Writephant 2026.0810 — A4. For the Americans, aye or nay on s’mores? For international peeps, what outdoor treat do you like best?

    I say YAY!

The photo was from Kings Canyon National Park in June. It's where I learned that starting and maintaining a campfire is relatively easy if you have the right kindling. Keeping it blazing (fiery not smoldery), however, takes constant vigilance and work. I appreciate my kitchen appliances that much more, now. Tasty s'more, btw.

Some literary classics show protagonist adapting well to nature, others show the survival becoming horrific. Which side do I prefer?

I definitely prefer stories where adaption to nature goes better, even though they're less likely. I prefer happy endings after struggle.

Jeffrey Deaver's character Colter Shaw (books) has a survivalist history. Each family member responded to freedom differently once dad passed away ...

What books featuring nature or the great outdoors come to mind?

My favorite books about the "great outdoors" right now (and some of my fav books right now), are by Kelley Armstrong. The Rockton series and its sequel series, Haven's Rock. Set in Canada's Yukon, these are small communities of people living almost totally off the grid (for reasons).

They have strict community rules (for acceptance & to stay).

    It's no easy life.

#Writephant 2026.0810 — A2. What books featuring nature or the great outdoors come to mind? And yes, they can include extremely inaccurate ones..

The question and tag imply fiction titles, and whilst almost anything I read that isn't space opera or urban fantasy includes nature (though not necessarily the great outdoors), nothing exemplary comes to mind on such short notice. As for non-fiction, I brought back Death Valley Rocks! from our trip (the fellow mentioned in Q1 and I) to… wait for it… Death Valley National Park. Stayed overnight two days in Panamint Springs. I recommend the restaurant (there's only one).

The photo is the sand dunes near Furnace Springs back in 2023, not this year.

  34. Finding out Lord of the Flies was a parody of similar stories has made me prefer the more idyllic stories. It feels that such stories reinforce cruelty as a norm rather than cooperation. I think we need discussions that have the truth about how people behave when stranded. #Writephant

Do I like spending time outdoors in nature?

In the beforetime, when I was young and my back didn't hurt, I took my vacation 1 week ending the 3rd weekend in August--a full week near Pittsburgh, PA at the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) War. My hubby did it too. Later, we did it together.

Over time I discovered that I hated camping. And I'm allergic to grass & trees. Esp. near the War.

I prefer manicured gardens. Or concrete.

  41. Hatchet is the obvious one. It won a Newberry Medal for a reason, and the late Gary Paulsen wrote dozens of memoirs showing he had firsthand experience of how to rough it out in the Canadian wilderness. #Writephant

#Writephant 2026.0810 — A1 . Do you like spending time outdoors in nature? Why or why not?

Yes, I like spending time in nature. I like hiking, but nothing strenuous. The spouse is the opposite, so there's the "why not." A guy we know reminds me of the Marlboro Man. He's the one I go with on excursions.

  47. I used to enjoy it more as a kid. As an adult, I’ve done simple hikes with my family and my sister took me glamping (fancy form of camping) for my thirtieth birthday. Mainly it’s my stamina being low and not doing those hikes solo when going on vacation. But it’d be nice to figure out which outdoors agree with me. #Writephant

Joy this week comes from finding a new saki I kinda think I like (I haven't had much saki, so I'm not super sure).
    It's Moonstone Coconut & Lemongrass.

We had sushi {sashimi] out for the first time in a long time after we drove into Philly for Sara's funeral, then to the cemetery for her interment, then finally home. It was a long sad day, and we drank a toast to her. She was a personal friend as well as a loss to the SF/SMOF community.

#Writephant 2026.0803 — A4. If you were writing a story about a Silicon Valley scammer, what is the most absurd or funniest tech idea would you have them sell, especially if it does absolutely nothing?

Not saying whether or not it's a viable idea, but I'd love it if someone would create background software that would hide the ads, click the buttons, and fix the scripting so we all could have normal magazine reading experiences while making the ad sellers happy despite NOBODY reading their ads. Bet if a rich tech bro did this as a public service, maintained it against countermeasures, and refused to be bought out, it could be a story of industrial espionage and ethics versus greed as the tech industry burns itself to the ground.

Not writing it. Have at it.
