If I could spend a week somewhere writing with just a notebook and pen, where would it be?Great question! Someplace totally disconnected with great scenery/beautiful landscapes, and lots of horseback riding. Where I could ride out all day, and stop whenever inspired to write, or nap, or nibble. And come back to a hearty meal and a warm bed.

@w8emv This is an interesting way of looking at it... For me the buffer gets roomier when writing by hand because I'm better able to block out distractions, I think.

@neve It can. When you type, you can reveal your ideas in a rapid motion. That creates a distance between intent and thinking about what you want to say. Sometimes the distance means you don't nail that moment of connection.
Whereas when you write like me, it can feel more intimate but then no one understands what you put down on paper XD. #Writephant -

Do I think handwriting changes the way ideas come out compared to typing?Writing certainly changes the way that we learn--I think that actually writing is better than typing for learning. I can type something without reading or absorbing it.
I get doodling when I write, and that definitely changes the narrative I create. I can add "fiddly bits" in with arrows and notes about stuff to do later. It's different.

For me, yes. Writing by hand feels like there's an extra degree of freedom. I can write bits of dialogue, sketch, jot ideas down - and do all of it very fast, without needing to switch from one app to another.
And I go into my deep focus mode more easily with pen and paper.

Do any of my characters write journals, letters, or notes by hand?Yes. I've written a couple of epistolary stories--only one published so far. The published one, "O-Rings", is a alt history combination of hand-written letters, notes, newspaper articles, press releases, video transcripts.
One of the other stories I'm working on is similar, with a lot of different pieces, but totally fantasy.

Do I have a favorite pen and/or notebook?My favorite notebook is a magnetic closed blank book I won at a cat show raffle. I keep it in my backpack and use it for new ideas and writing lists on the road when my laptop isn't handy.
I like to write with a good quality roller ball pen, .5 fine. Our house buys pilot & Arteza brand by the box, and I've shared them with other writers at signings. I often use a purple one . . .

In real life, I am firmly convinced there is no FTL or secret undiscovered science that will enable human beings to exceed the speed of light. No warp drive. No wormhole that won't crush you in its singularity. No stargates.
Nope. Nothing. Nada. Won't happen.
I'll still writing fiction using FTL, however. An unlimited universe is the ultimate romantic notion in SF—well, besides courting the opposite sex, preferred gender, or elegant alien beast of your choice, in an otherworldly milieu, maybe.

#Writephant 2026.0504 — A3. Have your characters ever visited other planets, asteroids, or stars?
Yes, I write SF. I have one novel where they live in a generation ship, another where an MC orphan is adopted into a mixed-species marriage and travels through an Andre Norton Star-Traders type universe, and a WIP where part of the story takes place on the moon (Reluctant Moon). In this story, the characters can also walk on the sky. It's SF, too.
PS: I also have a fantasy trilogy where the characters do actually walk on the sky, but that is definitely not SF.

#Writephant 2026.0504 — A2. Do you have a favorite work that is either set in space or a celestial body that isn’t Earth?
Plenty. Not only do I write SF, I read it. However, let's stick to media.
I love Firefly. From beginning to end, it was weirdly interesting and fun, with a pure demonstration of how to lampshade facts you really don't want to have to explain. I'm often offended when obvious science is gotten wrong, but the characters and plot lines had their own consistent logic and I went with the quirkiness.
I also loved the last series version of Battlestar Galactica, except for the very last episode. They made a think about FTL rules, and I felt they got the military milieu exceptionally well, with the robotics explained well enough to make it all consistent and believable—except for the very end where the story went so far off the rails, it launched the locomotive directly to high orbit. Otherwise, good SF, showing how technology affects humans.
I'll give a shout out to Babylon 5 for mixing idealism and multiculturalism in a way much better than most TV SF ever did.

For all humans who are stuck in a reality where no matter can go faster than the speed of light, outer space is the final frontier, though I suspect those who might colonize some world like Mars, or lesser rocky bodies, might content that exploring them is the final frontier. Would I travel through it? Me? Riding on the top of a controlled firecracker? You crackers?

Howdy!
I am so ready to talk about space!My favorite Star Wars memory (other than having my life changed all those years ago Summer 1977 in Hempstead, LI, NY seeing Star Wars while it was still in limited release), was going to a May 4th concert in 2012 at the Howard Theater in D.C. - Eric Bloom (lead singer) came out and started the show with a big "May the 4th be with You!"
I was already the biggest BOC fan. Made me happy!

I spent the week in Lebanon, PA at a cat show--hubby and I judged on Saturday.One of the maine coon breeders came by and told me that I had liked one of her cats at a prior show--and that cat now had kittens, one of whom she had named for me.
So, I share with you my namesake, Electra the maine coon kitten.

Have I ever done an audition? For what?In high school, I auditioned for Guys & Dolls. I sang "You've Got a Friend." I did not get a part. OTOH, at least one of the leads went on to sing at the Met.
In junior high I auditioned for chorus and failed to get in--they made me sing the "Star Spangled Banner."
Auditioning is not my thing, clearly.

I'm happy & sad that my beloved truck is in the shop, but I wasn't hurt. Neither was the sign that *leaped* in front of me in the parking lot, wreaking havoc to my undercarriage.OTOH, I had PIZZA!!!! For the first time since 2015, when I realized I was lactose intolerant, I had delicious pizza, thanks to Amy's frozen vegan pizza. Can't wait to try the other available flavors!

@Priyajsridhar They were a dream company--i just had no idea. Prince Charles came by to visit the founder/CEO while I worked there (he was still married to Princess Di). They subsidized the caf. There was a company gift shop--and we bought merch!! They rented our dep vans to go to NYC to the Javits for a show to unveil the tech we worked on. Everyone had internal or external training EVERY year. Best corporate culture ever.

What do I know about unions and labor strikes?My fav union story from my ILR days: everyone in ILR majors in Labor Relations, and a ton end up in Law School (where I thought I was going). One of the seniors (Al Davidoff)--the *biggest* LR fan --kinda disappeared after grad.
He was working as a Cornell janitor. He helped organize with the UAW, and was voted chapter president at 23. No one was shocked.

Today, my joy comes from our visiting kitty, Fuzzbutt (we did NOT name him) coming out of his shell and starting to camp out on hubby's office chair back (with hubby in the chair!).Also, my truck messaged me to let me know I had a low pressure tire (there was a puncture) and the tire place put on the spare for free. Maybe they were embarrassed *I* had to google where the stuff was to lower the spare? [Behind psgr rear seat]

#Writephant 2026.0330 — A5. What are your bread and butter games (specific titles)- the ones you return to time and again? Have you played any new games lately?
My bread and butter hashtag writer challenge games? You all probably know #PennedPossibilities, #ScribesAndMakers, #WordWeavers, and #WritersCoffeeClub. All amazingly helpful as a writer, and participants share truly useful ideas. Recently, I've added #EroticMusings, which since the current WIP includes spicy content (not specifically erotica), I figure I qualify for joining and replying to it. It has helped me resolve some issues. If nothing else, it's a new community.

Excluding a million dollars before taxes and not having systematic hate affecting our lives, what positive change would help me be more than okay?Sanity in our government, or at least less crazy. I'm hoping that the midterms will change the balance in Congress. And we're donating to candidates in difficult elections.
Ending the not-a-war would help, too. I've got family involved--two nephews in the IDF.
Enough people have died.
