#Writephant 2026.0525 (Questions Upon a Summer Day)

@adriabailton, @Priyajsridhar,I was intending upon attending your Monday discussion but when I sat down to do so at 4:05 in my time zone, I became so incredibly sleepy I ended up taking a nap instead! So, I guess that's how I spend my first summer day! Still, salutations. Not answering Qs with As formally, today, but will quickly dash off a note.
Summer months are turning into times of travels, having recently returned from Death Valley (I visited the pupfish living there) and Mammoth, having gone to Solvang, Pismo, Hanford, and Fresno (there was ice cream at Superior Dairy, so no worries), and getting ready to visit Sequoia. Don't know about writing routines, but I did spend some productive hours outside at various places during my travels, listening to the surf or the wind, writing. Don't have a favorite summer read, but I am reading @Erik_Buchanan's The Iron Noose, which counts. I can't feature summer per se in my current novel since such a season doesn't exist; it's either ferociously hot or also rainy and thus dangerously humid, but I've written it into my earlier stories at the tail end, as the summer season fades into fall and I can evoke harvest festivals, drying colorful leaves, and good food.

How would I feature summer in a story?In the summertime you can stay out later without it getting dark, and it's more reasonable to do interesting outdoor things, like picnic in graveyards (which was totally a thing in Victorian times).
I'd also like to do at least a short story/flash set in Red Square in summer where it's light until 10:30pm (see pic).

This weekend is often considered the start of summer in the USA. What's the start of my summer?It's not really summer for me until it gets warm, dammit. The only thing stopping this weekend from perfection was how cold and wet it was--I ordered warm and sunny! And I pre-ordered to get the discount, too. Let's get on the ball, people!
I curl up and hibernate when it's cold - no tolerance for cold. :-(

Some pieces of fiction assert museums are the best places for artifacts, while others talk about how they steal from marginalized countries. What is my stance?Artifacts belong in museums in the countries where they are from, even if those countries are "marginalized."
If other countries want to exhibit the artifacts, arrangements (like loans) can be made that are beneficial to the country of origin.

If I could design a museum exhibit with objects not from this world or reality, what would I choose?I love Natural History museums. I'd like to see Natural History exhibits for fantasy animals like gryphons, all the different dragons (that would be a whole wing!), unicorn, phoenix, etc. with info about habitats, legends, fact v. fiction, dioramas, videos, etc.

Do any of my characters like museums? If so, what is their favorite one?I'm going to cheat here a bit. In the Well World anthology Permutations, my character worked at/redesigned the Museum of the Well. It's a museum dedicated to the beings who created the artificial planet they're on.
The story is set deep underwater, for extra fun.

Can I recall the first time I visited a museum?I have 2 memorable early museum trips, both around the time I was 12.
One: me and my dad, touring the Museum of Natural History in NYC. I was fascinated plus: time with my dad. It's a fantastic museum.
Two: school trip (Millburn Jr High) to D.C.--we saw everything! And most of a day in the Smithsonian. Yowza! I was sick (fever 102), but love love love.
I still love museums.

If I could spend a week somewhere writing with just a notebook and pen, where would it be?Great question! Someplace totally disconnected with great scenery/beautiful landscapes, and lots of horseback riding. Where I could ride out all day, and stop whenever inspired to write, or nap, or nibble. And come back to a hearty meal and a warm bed.

@neve It can. When you type, you can reveal your ideas in a rapid motion. That creates a distance between intent and thinking about what you want to say. Sometimes the distance means you don't nail that moment of connection.
Whereas when you write like me, it can feel more intimate but then no one understands what you put down on paper XD. #Writephant -

Do I think handwriting changes the way ideas come out compared to typing?Writing certainly changes the way that we learn--I think that actually writing is better than typing for learning. I can type something without reading or absorbing it.
I get doodling when I write, and that definitely changes the narrative I create. I can add "fiddly bits" in with arrows and notes about stuff to do later. It's different.

For me, yes. Writing by hand feels like there's an extra degree of freedom. I can write bits of dialogue, sketch, jot ideas down - and do all of it very fast, without needing to switch from one app to another.
And I go into my deep focus mode more easily with pen and paper.

Do any of my characters write journals, letters, or notes by hand?Yes. I've written a couple of epistolary stories--only one published so far. The published one, "O-Rings", is a alt history combination of hand-written letters, notes, newspaper articles, press releases, video transcripts.
One of the other stories I'm working on is similar, with a lot of different pieces, but totally fantasy.

I like to write with a good quality roller ball pen, .5 fine. Our house buys pilot & Arteza brand by the box, and I've shared them with other writers at signings. I often use a purple one . . .
