Another week revolving around accountability. In Sydney this week, ICAC's Operation Rosny claimed its biggest scalp yet: Catholic Schools NSW sacked its chief executive Dallas McInerney after two bruising days in the witness box. In Canberra, the Plymouth Brethren were forced to deny, in the pages of Nine's mastheads and before a Senate inquiry, that they had secretly paid far-right influencers to harass candidates during last year's federal election.

Secular 40: career panic, fertility grief, ironic detachment, facelift jokes. What's absent is a story. Organized secularism hasn't built one. by @bledewitz.bsky.social

This was the week Australia's religious institutions came face to face with accountability, and mostly came off second best.
In Sydney, ICAC's Operation Rosny put the head of taxpayer-funded Catholic Schools NSW in the witness box over undeclared donations to a hard-right Liberal faction.
In North Parramatta, a parliamentary inquiry heard that a Baptist school and church described as a "cult" put a dog collar and lead on a child.
And in Perth, a District Court jury convicted the former Catholic Bishop of Broome of sexually abusing young Aboriginal men.
Three different institutions, three different mechanisms, all testing whether religious standing still buys a pass. This week it did not.

Is Islam Compatible with Western Civilisation?
When someone declares that Islam is "incompatible with Western civilisation," why is the West automatically treated as the moral standard? Before you judge whether Islam fits your "Western" world, you must first prove that your world is morally defensible.https://wrzky.com/is-islam-compatible-with-western-civilisation/

Every generation thinks morality is collapsing. Socrates said it. 2 Timothy said it. Your parents said it. The data consistently disagrees with all of them.

The Catholic bishops have used their annual Social Justice Statement to warn against "us and them" politics — worth reading alongside the same week's evidence of a Catholic schools body inside a corruption inquiry, and a religious coalition lobbying to keep its tax breaks!

Ancient people had the recipe. Science gave us the reason it works. That distinction — knowing HOW vs knowing WHY — is the whole history of human knowledge. by @daylightatheism

ICAC's Operation Rosny opened on Monday, and by Friday it had done something the sector rarely manages on its own: put the money of a publicly funded Catholic schools body on the public record. The commission is examining undeclared donations it alleges were arranged and approved by the chief executive of Catholic Schools NSW, inside a Liberal branch-stacking operation whose organisers, on the evidence of two mastheads, knew each other through Opus Dei. It's a clean illustration of religion operating through party machinery and taxpayer money, not from the pulpit.

Parliaments are still in winter recess, but the week produced something rarer than a bill: a retreat. After weeks of public pressure and court action, Edmund Rice Education Australia — the entity gifted hundreds of millions of dollars in Christian Brothers property for $1 a time — agreed on Friday to compensate abuse survivors "in full", assume liability for current and future claims, and consent to replacing the Christian Brothers as defendant. The order had pleaded poverty; the assets were placed beyond survivors' reach; the survivors sued, and the entity folded. As their lawyers put it, transferring wealth away does not extinguish a legal or moral obligation.

The countries with the highest human rights scores are also the least religious. Not a coincidence — it's a pattern that holds issue by issue, data set by data set.

Washington never once called Jesus divine in public. That wasn't evasion — it was deism. And deism was the founding framework of American freethought, per @bledewitz.bsky.social.

Parliaments are still in winter recess, so this was a week without bills or divisions. What it produced instead was a set of stories about the terms of religious privilege and religious protection: who is exempt, whose offence carries weight, whose money is making a difference, and whom the state chooses to shield.

The Christian Brothers says it's broke and cannot pay the survivors its abuse created. The documents say otherwise. Land titles obtained by the Guardian show it has housed convicted child sex offenders on its own property — including one who preyed on orphans, and one kept in schools for almost thirty years after officials were first warned. Survivors have gone to the Victorian Supreme Court to pursue Edmund Rice Education Australia instead: the entity that took the order's property for a dollar a title and now reports net assets of $2.3 billion. And in the Saturday Paper, Judy Courtin, a lawyer for survivors, who was in the room when the order's lawyers gave her firm one day's notice, traces the architecture back to February 2013, when EREA was incorporated one month after the Royal Commission was announced, its council appointed by the Christian Brothers' own Provincial. Her conclusion is the sentence to remember: if EREA looks, acts, sounds and smells like the Christian Brothers, it is the Christian Brothers, and the Christian Brothers must pay.

The federal parliament sat this week, and the religious right used the time to test how far it can push a single idea: that the law should be made to say that sex is fixed at birth and nothing else. Three separate bills to strip gender-identity protections from the Sex Discrimination Act came at the Senate and the House from three directions — One Nation, the Liberals and the Nationals — and all three were stopped before they could even be debated. Michaelia Cash has already promised to make it an election issue. This is the same campaign that runs through the religious-school exemptions, the "biological reality" rhetoric and the Giggle v Tickle litigation: a coordinated effort to write one contested view of human nature into Commonwealth law. It failed this week but it's not going away.

My favorite restaurant in Germany is almost next to where I live. It is owned by Turks. I regularly order pork schnitzel and beer there.
I do not know how religious the owners are privately. I do not know whether they eat pork or drink alcohol themselves.
But they serve it kindly. Professionally. Without drama. -
The parliaments may be in winter recess, but the scaffolding of religious privilege nonetheless got a thorough inspection this week.
