  1. Another charity shop book find. Quite pleased with these. The Time Machine features a 3D cover and includes 3D glasses. Obviously, the Christina Rossetti book includes the Goblin Market.

  2. “With stillness that is almost Paradise.
Darkness more clear than noonday holdeth her,
Silence more musical than any song;”
    - Christina Rossetti, 1862

Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti seems rather apt indeed.

Re-reading in full was eye opening. Swap out the Fae for big tech and it's rather apt.

It takes a cost to leave the walled gardens of Big Tech. But we must.

  4. Light In The Dark

The unceasing tumult of insane happenings continue rolling in, like a relentless pounding of waves threatening to drown us all. It’s enough to make you look for even the slightest glimmer of light in the darkness.

I’m not sure such a glimmer exists. To my way of thinking what’s happening can only continue to get worse until something, anything breaks in a way that no one is going to be able to control. It’s wretched enough that I find myself hoping that happens each morning.

The history of humankind proves that however this reaches a conclusion, that climax and its denouement will make its crescendo seem almost palpably tame by comparison. And, as we’ve proven and continue to prove, we’re certainly no smarter and no better than those who’ve screwed things up in the past.

Sorry for the bleakness. But it’s how I’m feeling things in the middle of this cold, darkening winter. These days reminds me of the first stanza of Christina Rossetti’s poem, originally published in 1872 under the title A Christmas Carol.

    In the bleak midwinter
    frosty wind made moan,
    earth stood hard as iron,
    water like a stone:
    snow had fallen,
snow on snow, snow on snow,
    in the bleak midwinter,
    long ago.

Although today does not feel so long ago.

You can also find more of my writings on a variety of topics on Medium at this link, including in the publications Ellemeno and Rome. I can also be found on social media under my name as above.

  6. While “In the Bleak Midwinter” is about the nativity, it’s setting is in the winter which doesn’t line up with the generally accepted time of Christ’s birth (springtime. Also, it rarely snows in Palestine, even less so in the spring??) and some have theorized that the use of “winter” is a metaphor but.. who knows what Rossetti was thinking

  8. Today is the birthday of #ChristinaRossetti, #JoanDidion & #HanifKureishi!

Isn't it striking that both Didion & Kureishi have a book called the black / white album, respectively?
If you prefer more colourful reads, here are our illustrated editions of Rossetti‘s "Goblin Market"

  10. I just discovered that my maternal grandmother shared a birthday with Christina Rossetti!!
Both born on 5th December (Rossetti in 1830 and my grandmother in 1919), Rossetti lived in #Frome between March 1853 and April 1854 to help her mother run a school that was unsuccessful so they moved back to London.
It was lovely to find this out today. We were thinking about Nanny on her birthday just 2 days ago!

  12. This poem was inspired by the Christina Rossetti poem “The Convent Threshold” and I encourage you to read that poem if you haven’t already and then mine.

    The Plight of Christina's Woman
    ©️ Nona Rose 2011

Can you see the stairs before me,
    Leading up to solemn stars
Clothed in midnight, coal, oily black
And staring back with that conviction
That's eating into my heart and soul
As only those pious and lofty ones can

Am I treading these boards alone,
My love, my darling, lovely, cherished love,
Whose arms enclose me as I sleep
And when I wake, take me in such tender embrace
That angels blush when they catch sight
And turn their heads for holy shame?

  13. #SciFiPrompt "Goblin"

    While possibly an allegory,
My poem tells a children’s story,
Critiques the mores of the times
    With vivid and irregular rhymes,
    Alludes to lust, forbidden fruits
And flesh force-fed by groping brutes
    That’s purchased in a plethora,
Refused by Lizzie, craved by Laura.

  14. This week's poetry post on my blog presents Christina Rossetti's "A Christmas Carol", a.k.a. "In the Bleak Midwinter", one of my favourite carols.

The post includes a simple vocabulary exercise for English language learners, and the link to a lovely new rendition of this poem-turned-church hymn.
