  14. Ego and Chaos in My Upcoming Hilarious Concert

I am thrilled to announce that I will be performing in an upcoming concert organized by Source/Filter Music on Saturday, May 30th at 8pm!

This isn’t your typical, buttoned-up classical performance. This time around, we are diving into something wonderfully witty and theatrical: Domenico Cimarosa’s brilliant short comic opera, The Maestro (originally Il maestro di cappella)! If you want to laugh with a bunch of musicians playfully mocking the music business—this is the show for you. 🤣

The Maestro is a parody of ego and rehearsal chaos. This comic intermezzo lampoons a self-important conductor who can’t stop talking long enough to rehearse. Performed in a lively new English translation by Britta Sterling (with a dash of Italian), baritone/conductor Caleb Yanez Glickman takes on the rare challenge of conducting and starring as the flustered Maestro.

The beauty of this production is its intimacy and spontaneity: it’s performed with minimal staging and without microphones. As the musicians sit and play, we have to respond to his every ridiculous whim in real-time. It’s a total breakdown of the traditional conductor-orchestra relationship, and it was an absolute blast to rehearse it yesterday!

Adding to the spirit of chaos and spontaneity, I discovered at rehearsal that I’ll be taking over the Concertmaster chair—which includes a couple of flashy solos as well as helping to keep the orchestra from completely revolting against the “Maestro”!

Tickets are officially live! You can find all the event details and grab your seats directly through the box office page here.

Mark your calendars for May 30th, 8pm, at the Sierra Madre Playhouse!
