  11. Recently, a new lit mag closed for submissions after only 50 entries. I wish them the best of luck. May they only have high-quality stories written by actual humans. #LitMags #WritingCommunity

  16. Congratulations, Oso Guardiola, on the nomination of your story "Subcommandante Saúl Reyna Discusses Alienation of the Lover from the Beloved" for the 2026 Pushcart Prize! The story appeared in Issue No. 1 of Anarchist Fictions.

We were lucky to be able to print this poignant and finely-crafted tale. Oso, we hope you continue writing and sharing your writing with the world for a very long time.

Every year, the Pushcart Prize honours the best writing from small presses and lit mags. Winning pieces are anthologized in "Best of Small Presses".

  17. One of my stories made it to the second round of consideration at a lit mag back in early February. I sent an email asking if it's still being considered, and they said it might take until next spring for all the editors to read it.

    Whut.

  22. I often wonder why there aren't more calls for Indigenous writers and special Indigenous-themed anthologies/magazines for June. After all, it is Indigenous History month. A shoutout to ALOCASIA for doing so, though! alocasia.org #IndigenousHistoryMonth #IndigenousAuthors #Indigedon #WritingCommunity #LitMags #Anthologies

  31. I'm not a fan of form rejection letters which include suppositions of what's wrong with your story.

My most recent rejection included "Sometimes a narrative can be excellent work but simply not be right for the journal. One common reason for this is that the text, though under 1000 words, isn't a flash narrative. This might mean your story would work better as a longer story, part of a longer story, or even poetry."

Another time, I received a form rejection that said my work might be offensive or poorly edited.

Lit mags, don't put stuff like this in your form rejections. If it's personalized and you want a writer to revise and resubmit, ok. But including this in all rejections comes across as condescending or alienating.

Sometimes the story is perfectly fine and just doesn't fit in your issue, and that's ok. I've had stories rejected with these sorts of copy/paste commentary that went on to win contests.

Writers, don't take this stuff personally. Maybe your story does need a bit more revision. Or maybe the form rejection was written by a crankyass. #WritingCommunity #LitMags #publishing #RejectionLetters

  36. February has been a dry spell for me, but I did just receive my author's copies of OnSpec Magazine. My poem "Angakkuq" is featured inside. This magazine is technically a December 2024 release but the print copies were delayed because of the mail strike.

I have three pieces scheduled for print next month: a poem in Strange Horizons, an essay in ALOCASIA, and a story in Flash Fiction Online. In theory, a longer short story will be printed in an anthology, but that anthology has been going through delays for about a year. We'll see. onspec.ca/
